Inspection and Verification

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2009 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: If equipped with fire suppression system, refer to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM article for Important Safety Warnings. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
NOTE: The electrical power to the air suspension system must be turned off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
NOTE: Upon installation of a new lighting control module (LCM), the module must be reconfigured. Refer to MODULE CONFIGURATION article.
  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.
    VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

    Mechanical Electrical
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Brake fluid level
    • Door/decklid closures
    • Engine coolant level
    • Engine oil level
    • Fuel evaporative system
    • Fuel level
    • Fuel tank
    • Tire pressure
    • Washer fluid level
    • Central junction box (CJB) fuse(s):
      • 2 (7.5A)
      • 13 (10A)
      • 26 (10A)
      • 31 (5A)
    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Message center switches
    • Key-in-ignition warning switch (part of the ignition switch)
    • Lighting control module (LCM)
    • Restraints control module (RCM)
    • Instrument cluster (IC)
  3. If the cause is not visually evident, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
    4. NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
  4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
    5. NOTE: The vehicle communication module (VCM) LED prove-out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM.
  5. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM:
    • Check the VCM connection to the vehicle.
    • Check the scan tool connection to the VCM.
    • Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article, No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no communication with the scan tool.
  6. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • Verify the ignition key is in the ON position.
    • Verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle.
    • Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article to diagnose no response from the PCM.
  7. Carry out the network test.
    • If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article.
    • If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs.
  8. Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the instrument cluster (IC), the restraints control module (RCM) and the fire suppression system module (FSSM).
  9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to DTC Charts . For all other DTCs, refer to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article.
  10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to Symptom Chart - Instrument Cluster , go to Symptom Chart - Information And Message Center  or Go to Symptom Chart - Warning Chimes .
