Test I: Speedometer/Odometer Inoperative

  1. Check vehicle speed sensor signal. Turn key OFF. Connect a voltmeter between the S screw terminal and the G screw terminal on the speedometer (back of instrument cluster). See Figure . Place the voltmeter in the AC volts position. Drive the vehicle at the speeds indicated below and verify their corresponding voltages. See SPEEDOMETER VOLTAGE  table. Are the voltages correct? If yes, replace the speedometer. If no, go to next step.
  2. Check instrument cluster printed circuit. Turn key OFF. Verify that the 4 screws fastening the speedometer to the instrument cluster printed circuit are fastened securely. Measure the resistance between speedometer connector terminal "S" and instrument cluster connector C268 terminal No. 3. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Measure the resistance between speedometer connector terminal "G" and instrument cluster connector C268 terminal No. 5. Measure the resistance between speedometer connector terminal "B" and instrument cluster connector C268 terminal No. 2. Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the instrument cluster printed circuit. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Check wires between vehicle speed sensor and instrument cluster. Turn key OFF. Remove the instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect the instrument cluster connector C268 and the vehicle speed sensor connector. Measure the resistance of the Pink/Blue wire between the vehicle speed sensor connector and the instrument cluster connector C268. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Measure the resistance of the Black/Red wire between the instrument cluster connector C268 and the vehicle speed sensor connector. Measure the resistance of the Pink/Blue wire between the instrument cluster connector C268 and ground. Are the resistances less than 5 ohms between the instrument cluster and the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), and greater than 10,000 ohms between the Pink/Blue wire at the instrument cluster and ground? If yes, replace the vehicle speed sensor. If no, service wires in question.
