Fuel Level Sensor (Sending Unit): Removal
WARNING:
Do not smoke, carry lighted tobacco or an open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited, resulting in possible personal injury. Fuel supply lines will remain pressurized for long periods of time after engine shut down. This pressure must be relieved before servicing of the fuel system is begun.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Drain the fuel from the fuel tank. in this section.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the two pins from the fuel tank front protector. See Fig 1 . Remove the three fuel tank front protector bolts and remove the fuel tank front protector.
- Disconnect the evaporative emission hose from the evaporative emission valve. Loosen the fuel return hose clamp and slide it away from the fuel return hose connection. See Fig 2 . Use a rag to prevent fuel from spilling while disconnecting the fuel lines. Disconnect the fuel return hose at the fuel tank. Loosen the fuel supply hose clamp and slide it away from the fuel supply hose connection. Disconnect the fuel supply hose at the fuel tank.
- Disconnect the fuel pump and bracket electrical connector. Loosen the hose clamp from the fuel tank to filler pipe hose and slide the hose clamp toward the fuel tank. Separate the fuel tank to filler pipe hose from the fuel tank filler pipe.
- Place a jack under the fuel tank to support it when the fuel tank support straps are removed. Remove the two fuel tank support strap bolts and allow the fuel tank support straps to hang down. See Fig 1 . Remove the spring clips from the fuel tank support strap hinges. Remove the fuel tank support strap hinges and remove the fuel tank support straps. Lower the fuel tank from the vehicle.
- Clean area on top of fuel tank surrounding fuel pump. Remove 6 fuel pump bolts. See Fig 3 .
- Lift fuel pump assembly from fuel tank. Remove and discard fuel pump O-ring.
- Remove the 2 fuel tank sensor (sending unit) bolts. See Fig 4 .Remove fuel tank sensor (sending unit).
NOTE:
Label the fuel return line and fuel supply line to ease installation.
NOTE:
Fuel pump must be tipped to remove it from the fuel tank. Do not lift fuel pump straight out of tank or fuel tank sensor (sending unit) may be damaged.
