Pinpoint Test F: Instrument Cluster & Panel Lighting

NOTE: Go to TROUBLE SHOOTING  before starting pinpoint test. Identify system where problem is located. Find symptom in trouble shooting and go to specific pinpoint test step as directed by trouble shooting procedure.

  1. Check Fuse

    Turn key OFF. Check the 15A TAIL LAMP fuse located in the interior fuse panel. Is the fuse OK? If yes, go to step  4 . If no, go to next step.
  2. Check System

    Key OFF. Replace the 15A TAIL LAMP fuse. Does the fuse fail again? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  4 .
  3. Check For Short To Ground

    Turn key OFF. Remove 15A TAIL LAMP fuse. Disconnect the headlamp switch connector located on the instrument panel. Measure the resistance of the (Orange/Blue) wire between the right hand terminal of the 15A TAIL LAMP fuse holder and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, service the (Orange/Blue) wire. If no, replace the 15A TAIL LAMP fuse. Go to next step. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. Check Power Supply To The Headlamp Switch

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the headlamp switch connector located on the instrument panel. Measure the voltage of the (Orange/Blue) wire at the headlamp switch connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Orange/Blue) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Check Headlamp Switch

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the headlamp switch connector located on the instrument panel. Headlamp switch in the OFF position. Measure the resistance between the (Orange/Blue) wire terminal and the (Pink) wire (circuit LC13) terminal on the headlamp switch. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the resistance between the (Orange/Blue) wire terminal and the (Pink) wire (circuit LC13) terminal on the headlamp switch. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms with the headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position, and greater than 10,000 ohms with the headlamp switch in the OFF position? If yes, reconnect the headlamp switch. Go to next step. If no, replace the headlamp switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  6. Check Power Supply To Timer Module & Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the instrument panel dimmer switch connector located on the instrument panel. Disconnect the timer module connector located behind the left hand outer kick panel. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire at the instrument panel dimmer switch connector. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire at the timer module connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, (Instrument panel dimmer switch lamp does not work) go to step  13 . If no, (All instrument panel lamps do not work) go to next step. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  7. Check Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch Ground

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the instrument panel dimmer switch connector located on the instrument panel. Measure the resistance of the (Black) wire (circuit IPE1) between the instrument panel dimmer switch connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to step  10 . If no, go to next step. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  8. Check Wire Between Diode Junction Box & Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the instrument panel dimmer switch connector. Remove the instrument cluster. Disconnect the green diode strip from the diode junction box located behind the instrument cluster. Measure the resistance of the (Black) wire (circuit IPE1) between the instrument panel dimmer switch connector and Terminal No. 24 of the diode junction box. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Black) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  9. Check Diode Junction Box Ground

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the green diode strip from the diode junction box. Measure the resistance of the (Black/Red) wire between Terminal No. 28 of the diode junction box and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace the green diode strip. If no, service the (Black/Red)-(Black) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  10. Check Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the instrument panel dimmer switch connector. Depress and hold the brightening side of the instrument panel dimmer switch. Measure the resistance between the (Blue/Red) wire terminal and the (Black) wire terminal (circuit IPE1) on the instrument panel dimmer switch. Depress and hold the dimming side of the instrument panel dimmer switch. Measure the resistance between the (Blue/Black) wire terminal and the (Black) wire terminal (circuit IPE1) on the instrument panel dimmer switch. Release the instrument panel dimmer switch. Measure the resistance between the (Blue/Red) wire terminal, the (Blue/Black) wire terminal and the (Black) wire terminal (circuit IPE1) on the instrument panel dimmer switch. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the wire terminals with the instrument panel dimmer switch depressed, and greater than 10,000 ohms with the instrument panel dimmer switch released? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the instrument panel dimmer switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  11. Check Wires Between Timer Module & Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch

    Key OFF. Disconnect the instrument panel dimmer switch connector and the timer module connector. Measure the resistance of the (Blue/Red) wire and the (Blue/Black) wire between the timer module connector and the instrument panel dimmer switch connector. Measure the resistance of the (Blue/Red) wire and the (Blue/Black) wire between the timer module connector and ground. Are the resistances less than 5 ohms between the timer module connector and the instrument panel dimmer switch connector, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the timer module connector and ground? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the wire(s) in question. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  12. Check Timer Module

    Turn key OFF. Reconnect the timer module connector and the instrument panel dimmer switch connector. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink/Black) wire on the timer module connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, service the (Pink/Black) wire. If no, replace the timer module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  13. Check Power Supply To Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch Bulb

    Turn key OFF. Reconnect the timer module connector. Reconnect the instrument panel dimmer switch connector. Remove the instrument panel dimmer switch bulb. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage on the instrument panel dimmer switch bulb connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the instrument panel dimmer switch.
  14. Check Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch Bulb Control Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Remove the instrument panel dimmer switch bulb. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage on the instrument panel dimmer switch bulb connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, replace the instrument panel dimmer switch bulb. If no, go to next step.
  15. Check Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the instrument panel dimmer switch connector. Remove the instrument panel dimmer switch bulb. Measure the resistance between the (Pink/Black) wire terminal and the instrument panel dimmer switch bulb connector on the instrument panel dimmer switch. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, service the (Pink/Black) wire. If no, replace the instrument panel dimmer switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  16. Check Power Supply To Instrument Cluster

    Turn key OFF. Remove the instrument cluster. Disconnect the 12-pin black instrument cluster connector and the 12-pin white instrument cluster connector. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wires on the 12-pin black instrument cluster connector and the 12-pin white instrument cluster connector. Are the voltages greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire(s). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  17. Check Power Supply To Instrument Cluster Bulb(s)

    Turn Key OFF. Reconnect the 12-pin black and white instrument cluster connectors. Remove the instrument cluster bulb(s) that are not working. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage at the instrument cluster bulb connector(s) for the bulb(s) that are not working. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the instrument cluster printed circuit board.
  18. Check Instrument Cluster Bulb Control Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Remove the instrument cluster bulb(s) not working. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage at the instrument cluster bulb connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, replace the instrument cluster bulb(s). If no, go to next step.
  19. Check Instrument Cluster Bulb Control Circuit Inputs

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the 12-pin black instrument cluster connector and the 12-pin white instrument cluster connector. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink/Black) wires at the 12-pin black instrument cluster connector and the 12-pin white instrument cluster connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, replace the instrument cluster printed circuit board. If no, service the (Pink/Black) wire(s) between the instrument cluster and the timer module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  20. Check Power Supply To Headlamp Switch

    Turn key OFF. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire (circuit IJ06) at the headlamp switch connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  21. Check Power Supply To Headlamp Switch Bulb

    Turn key OFF. Remove the headlamp switch bulb. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage at the headlamp switch bulb connector on the headlamp switch. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the headlamp switch.
  22. Check Headlamp Switch Bulb Control Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Remove the headlamp switch bulb. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage on the headlamp switch bulb connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, replace the headlamp switch bulb. If no, go to next step.
  23. Check Headlamp Switch

    Key OFF. Disconnect the headlamp switch connector located on the instrument panel. Remove the headlamp switch bulb. Measure the resistance between the headlamp switch bulb connector and the (Pink/Black) wire terminal on the headlamp switch. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, service the (Pink/Black) wire between the headlamp switch and the timer module. If no, replace the headlamp switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  24. Check Power Supply To Cruise Control On/Off Switch Bulb

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the CRUISE CONT. ON/OFF switch connector located on the instrument panel. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire at the CRUISE CONT. ON/OFF switch connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  25. Check Cruise Control On/Off Switch Bulb Control Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the CRUISE CONT. ON/OFF switch connector. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink/Black) wire at the CRUISE CONT. ON/OFF switch connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, replace the CRUISE CONT. ON/OFF switch. If no, service the (Pink/Black) wire between the CRUISE CONT. ON/OFF switch and the timer module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  26. Check Power Supply To Radio Bulbs

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the radio connector located in the control console. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire on the radio connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire.
  27. Check Radio Bulbs Control Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the radio connector. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage on the (Pink/Black) wire on the radio connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, service the radio. If no, service the (Pink/Black) wire between the radio and the timer module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  28. Check Power Supply To Rear Seat Remote Control Panel Bulbs

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the rear seat remote control panel connector located on the left hand quarter trim panel. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire on the rear seat remote control panel connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  29. Check Rear Seat Remote Control Panel Bulb Ground

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the rear seat remote control panel connector. Measure the resistance of the (Black/White) wire between the rear seat remote control panel connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace/service the rear seat remote control panel. If no, service the (Black/White) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  30. Check Power Supply To Compact Disc Player Bulbs

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the compact disc player connector located in the control console. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire on the compact disc player connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  31. Check Compact Disc Player Bulbs Control Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the compact disc player connector. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink/Black) wire at the compact disc player connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, service the compact disc player. If no, service the (Pink/Black) wire between the compact disc player and the timer module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  32. Check Power Supply To Front Climate Control Panel

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the front climate control panel connector located in the control console. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire at the front climate control panel connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  33. Check Power Supply To Front Climate Control Panel Bulb(s)

    Turn key OFF. Reconnect the front climate control panel connector. Remove the front climate control panel bulb(s) that are not working. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage at the front climate control panel bulb connector(s) on the front climate control panel. Are the voltages greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the front climate control panel.
  34. Check Front Climate Control Panel Bulb Control Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Remove the front climate control panel bulb(s) that are not working. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage at the front climate control panel bulb connector(s) on the front climate control panel while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, replace the front climate control panel bulb(s). If no, go to next step.
  35. Check Front Climate Control Panel

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the front climate control panel connector. Remove the front climate control panel bulb(s) that are not working. Measure the resistance between the front climate control panel bulb connector(s) and the (Pink/Black) wire terminal on the front climate control panel connector (on the front climate control panel). Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? If yes, service the (Pink/Black) wire between the front climate control panel and the timer module. If no, replace the front climate control panel. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  36. Check Power Supply To Rear Climate Control Panel

    Key OFF. Disconnect the rear climate control panel connector located on the left hand quarter trim panel. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire at the rear climate control panel connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  37. Check Power Supply To Rear Climate Control Panel Bulb(s)

    Turn key OFF. Reconnect the rear climate control panel connector. Remove the rear climate control panel bulb(s) that are not working. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage at the rear climate control panel bulb connector(s). Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the rear climate control panel.
  38. Check Rear Climate Control Panel Bulb Ground

    Turn key OFF. Remove the rear climate control panel bulb(s) that are not working. Measure the resistance between the rear climate control panel bulb connector(s) and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace the rear climate control panel bulb(s). If no, go to next step.
  39. Check Rear Climate Control Panel Ground

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the rear climate control panel connector. Measure the resistance of the (Black) wire between the rear climate control panel and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace the rear climate control panel. If no, service the (Black) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  40. Check Power Supply To Rear Blower Motor Switch

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the rear blower motor switch connector from the front climate control panel located in the control console. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire at the rear blower motor switch connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  41. Check Rear Blower Motor Switch Bulb Control Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the rear blower motor switch connector from the front climate control panel. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink/Black) wire at the rear blower motor switch connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, replace the rear blower motor switch. If no, service the (Pink/Black) wire between the rear blower motor switch and the timer module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  42. Check Power Supply To Cigar Lighter And Ashtray Bulb

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the cigar lighter and ashtray bulb connector located in the control console. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire at the cigar lighter and ashtray bulb connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  43. Check Cigar Lighter And Ashtray Bulb Control Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the cigar lighter and ashtray bulb connector. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink/Black) wire at the cigar lighter and ashtray bulb connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, replace the cigar lighter and ashtray bulb. If no, service the (Pink/Black) wire between the cigar lighter/ashtray and the timer module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  44. Check Power Supply To Rear Defogger Switch Bulb

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the RR DEFOGGER switch connector located on the instrument panel. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire at the RR DEFOGGER switch connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  45. Check Rear Defogger Switch Bulb Control Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the RR DEFOGGER switch connector. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink/Black) wire at the RR DEFOGGER switch connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, replace the RR DEFOGGER switch. If no, service the (Pink/Black) wire between the RR DEFOGGER switch and the timer module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  46. Check Power Supply To Hazard Switch Bulb

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the HAZARD switch connector located on the instrument panel. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire at the hazard switch connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  47. Check Hazard Switch Bulb Control Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the HAZARD switch connector. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink/Black) wire at the HAZARD switch connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, replace the HAZARD switch. If no, service the (Pink/Black) wire between the HAZARD switch and the timer module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  48. Check Power Supply To Power E-AT Switch Bulb

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the POWER E-AT switch connector located on the instrument panel. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire at the POWER E-AT switch connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  49. Check Power E-AT Switch Bulb Control Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the POWER E-AT switch connector. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink/Black) wire at the POWER E-AT switch connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, replace the POWER E-AT switch. If no, service the (Pink/Black) wire between the POWER E-AT switch and the timer module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  50. Check Power Supply To RR Wiper/Washer Switch

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the RR WIPER/WASHER switch connector located on the instrument panel. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink) wire at the RR WIPER/WASHER switch connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Pink) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  51. Check RR Wiper/Washer Switch Bulb Control Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the RR WIPER/WASHER switch connector. Headlamp switch in the parking lamp position or the headlamp position. Operate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the dimmest position to the brightest position. Measure the voltage of the (Pink/Black) wire at the RR WIPER/WASHER switch connector while operating the instrument panel dimmer switch. Does the voltage vary from approximately 9 volts (dimmest position) to approximately 0.2 volts (brightest position)? If yes, replace the RR WIPER/WASHER switch. If no, service the (Pink/Black) wire between the RR WIPER /WASHER switch and the timer module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
