Test I: Indicator Lamp System

NOTE: Do NOT start this test unless directed by a symptom diagnosis in INDICATOR LAMP SYSTEM  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  1. Turn key to OFF position. Remove the left turn indicator lamp bulb. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the left turn indicator lamp bulb. Is the resistance approximately 16 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace turn indicator bulb.
  2. Turn key to OFF position. Disconnect the 11-pin combination switch connector located on the combination switch. See Figure . Remove the instrument cluster. See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Locate and disconnect the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. Measure the resistance of the Red/Green wire between the 11-pin combination switch connector and the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, service Red/Green wire.
  3. Turn key to OFF position. Disconnect the hazard switch connector located on the instrument panel. Disconnect the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. Measure the resistance of the Red/Green wire between terminal "F" of the hazard switch connector and terminal "K" (Green/Red wire) of the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace instrument cluster. If no, service Red/Green wire.
  4. Turn key to OFF position. Remove the right turn indicator lamp bulb. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the right turn indicator lamp bulb. Is the resistance approximately 16 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace turn indicator bulb.
  5. Turn key to OFF position. Disconnect the 11-pin combination switch connector located on the combination switch. Remove the instrument cluster. See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. Measure the resistance of the Red/White wire between the 11-pin combination switch connector and the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, service Red/White wire.
  6. Turn key to OFF position. Disconnect the hazard switch connector. Disconnect the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. Measure the resistance of the Red/White wire between terminal "H" of the hazard switch connector and terminal "E" of the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace instrument cluster. If no, service Red/White wire.
  7. Turn key to OFF position. Remove the high beam indicator lamp bulb. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the high beam indicator lamp bulb. Is the resistance approximately 16 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace high beam indicator bulb.
  8. Turn key to OFF position. Remove the instrument cluster. See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. Turn on the high beam headlamps. Measure the voltage on terminal "P" (Orange/Blue wire) at the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the Orange/Blue wire between the right headlamp relay and the instrument cluster.
  9. Turn key to OFF position. Disconnect the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. Hold the flash-to-pass switch on. Measure the voltage on terminal "P" (Orange/Blue wire) at the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, replace instrument cluster. If no, service the Orange/Blue wire between the combination switch and the instrument cluster.
  10. Turn key to OFF position. Remove the instrument cluster. See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . Measure the resistance of the Black wire between terminal "R" of the 20-pin instrument cluster connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to step  13 . If no, go to next step.
  11. Turn key to OFF position. Remove the instrument cluster. Disconnect the 20-pin instrument cluster connector. Disconnect the center Black diode strip from the diode junction box located behind the instrument cluster. Measure the resistance of the Black wire between terminal "R" of the 20-pin instrument cluster connector and terminal No. 14 of the diode junction box connector. See Figure . Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, service Black wire.
  12. Turn key to OFF position. Disconnect the center Black diode strip from the diode junction box connector. Measure the resistance of the Black/Red wire between terminal No. 15 of the diode junction box connector and ground. See Figure . The Black/Red wire splices into the Black wire before going to ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace the center Black diode strip. See DIODE STRIPS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no, service Black/Red-Black wire.
  13. Turn key to OFF position. Remove the instrument cluster. See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect all of the instrument cluster connectors. Remove the left and right turn indicator lamp bulbs, and the high beam indicator lamp bulb. Measure the resistance of the circuit between terminal "R" on the 20-pin instrument cluster terminal, and the left and right turn indicator lamp bulb ground terminals. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . Measure the resistance of the circuit between terminal "R" on the 20-pin instrument cluster terminal and the high beam indicator lamp bulb ground terminal. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace the turn indicator lamp bulbs and the high beam indicator lamp bulb. If no, replace the instrument cluster.
  14. Turn key to OFF position. Disconnect the speed control module connector located in the center console below the radio. Turn key to ON position. Apply 12 volts to terminal "M" (Red/Yellow wire) at the speed control module harness connector. Does the cruise indicator lamp illuminate? If yes, diagnose problem with cruise control system.
