Pinpoint Test K: Warning Lamp System (Except Oil Pressure)

NOTE: Go to TROUBLE SHOOTING  before starting pinpoint test. Identify system where problem is located. Find symptom in trouble shooting and go to specific pinpoint test step as directed by trouble shooting procedure.

  1. Check 10A Meter Fuse

    Check the 10A METER fuse located in the interior fuse panel. Is the fuse OK? If yes, go to step  4 . If no, go to next step.
  2. Check System

    Turn key OFF. Replace the 10A METER fuse. Turn key ON. Inspect the fuse. Does the fuse fail again? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  4 .
  3. Check For Short To Ground

    Turn key OFF. Remove the 10A METER fuse. Remove the instrument cluster. Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors. Disconnect the oil level timer module connector located behind the glove compartment. Measure the resistance of the (Gray/Blue) wire between the right terminal of the 10A METER fuse and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, service the (Gray/Blue) wire. If no, replace the 10A METER fuse and reconnect the oil level timer module. Go to next step. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. Check Power Supply To Instrument Cluster

    Turn key OFF. Remove the instrument cluster. Disconnect the black 12-pin instrument cluster connector. Turn key ON. Measure the voltage on Terminal 2I (Gray/Blue) at the black 12-pin instrument cluster connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Gray/Blue) wire between the instrument cluster and the interior fuse panel. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Check Oil Level Switch

    Turn key OFF. Reconnect the black 12-pin instrument cluster connector. Disconnect the oil level switch connector located on the oil pan. Turn key ON. Ground the (Black/Red) wire at the oil level switch connector. Does the low oil level warning lamp illuminate when the (Black/Red) wire is grounded? If yes, replace the oil level switch. If no, go to next step. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  6. Check Wire Between Instrument Cluster & Oil Level Timer Module

    Turn key OFF. Remove the instrument cluster. Disconnect the black 12-pin instrument cluster connector. Disconnect the oil level timer module connector located behind the glove compartment. Measure the resistance of the (Black/Yellow) wire between Terminal No. 2H of the black 12-pin instrument cluster connector and the oil level timer module connector. Measure the resistance of the (Black/Yellow) wire between Terminal No. 2H of the black 12-pin instrument cluster connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the instrument cluster connector and the oil level timer module connector, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the instrument cluster connector and ground? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Black/Yellow) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  7. Check Low Oil Level Warning Lamp Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Reconnect the instrument cluster connectors. Disconnect the oil level timer module connector. Ground the (Black/Yellow) wire at the oil level timer module. Turn key ON. Does the low oil level warning lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  9 . If no, go to next step.
  8. Check Low Oil Level Warning Lamp Bulb

    Turn key OFF. Remove the low oil level warning lamp bulb. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the low oil level warning lamp bulb. Is the resistance approximately 17 ohms? If yes, replace the instrument cluster printed circuit board. If no, replace the low oil level warning lamp bulb.
  9. Check The Power Supply To Oil Level Timer Module

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the oil level timer module connector. Turn key ON. Measure the voltage on the (Gray/Blue) wire at the oil level timer module connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Gray/Blue) wire between the instrument cluster and the oil level timer module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  10. Check Oil Level Timer Module Ground

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the oil level timer module connector. Measure the resistance of the (Black) wire between the oil level timer module connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Black) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  11. Check Vehicle Start Signal To Oil level Timer Module

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Disconnect the oil level timer module connector. Turn key to the START position. Measure the resistance of the (Light Green/Black) wire between the oil level timer module connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms while the key is in the START position? If yes, go to next step. If no, see STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES - VILLAGER to diagnose the ignition switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  12. Check Wire Between Oil Level Timer Module & Oil Level Switch

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the oil level timer module connector. Disconnect the oil level switch connector. Measure the resistance of the (Black/Red) wire between the oil level timer module connector and the oil level switch connector. Measure the resistance of the (Black/Red) wire between the oil level timer module connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the oil level timer module connector and the oil level switch connector, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the oil level timer module connector and ground? If yes, replace the oil level timer module. If no, service the (Black/Red) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  13. Check Door Ajar Warning Lamp Bulb

    Turn key OFF. Remove the instrument cluster. Remove the door ajar lamp bulb. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the door ajar warning lamp bulb. Is the resistance approximately 16 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the door ajar warning lamp bulb.
  14. Check Door Ajar Warning Lamp Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Remove the instrument cluster. Leave the instrument cluster connectors connected. Reconnect the door ajar warning lamp bulb. Disconnect the center black diode strip from the diode junction box located behind the instrument cluster. Ground Terminal No. 19 of the diode junction box connector. Turn key ON. Does the door ajar warning lamp illuminate when Terminal No. 19 is grounded? If yes, go to step  16 . If no, go to next step.
  15. Check Wire Between Instrument Cluster & Diode Junction Box

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the white 12-pin instrument cluster connector. Disconnect the center black diode strip from the diode junction box. Measure the resistance of the (Blue) wire between Terminal No. 3C of the white 12-pin instrument cluster connector and Terminal No. 19 of the diode junction box connector. Measure the resistance of the (Blue) wire between Terminal No. 3C of the white 12-pin instrument cluster connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the instrument cluster connector and the diode junction box connector, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the instrument cluster connector and ground? If yes, replace the instrument cluster printed circuit board. If no, service the (Blue) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  16. Check Door Jamb Switches Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the center black diode strip from the diode junction box connector. Close all doors. Use the analog Rotunda Inductive Dwell-Tach-Volts Ohms Tester (059-00010), or equivalent, to measure the resistance of the (Red/White) wire between Terminal No. 18 of the diode junction box connector and ground under the following conditions. See DOOR JAMB SWITCHES CIRCUIT RESISTANCE  table. Are the resistances OK?
    • If yes, go to step  25 .
    • If no, (All doors closed) go to next step. If no, (left hand door) go to step  18 .
    • If no, (right hand door) go to step  20 .
    • If no, (Sliding door) go to step  22 . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
    DOOR JAMB SWITCHES CIRCUIT RESISTANCE

    Door Resistance
    All Doors Closed Greater Than 10,000 ohms
    left hand Door Open Less Than 5 ohms
    right hand Door Open Less Than 5 ohms
    Sliding Door Open Less Than 5 ohms
  17. Check For Short To Ground

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the left hand door jamb switch located on the left hand door jamb. Disconnect the right hand door jamb switch located on the right hand door jamb. Disconnect the sliding door jamb switch located on the sliding door jamb. Disconnect the center black diode strip from the diode junction box. Disconnect the keyless entry module connector (if equipped) located in the center console below the radio. Measure the resistance of the (Red/White) wire between Terminal No. 18 of the diode junction box connector and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Red/White) wire (and/or (Black/White) wire on vehicles equipped with keyless entry). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  18. Check left hand Door Jamb Switch

    Turn key OFF. Remove the left hand door jamb switch located on the left hand door jamb. Measure the resistance between the (Red/White) wire terminal on the left hand door jamb switch and the mounting screw on the left hand door jamb switch. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms with the door jamb switch button released, and greater than 10,000 ohms with the door jamb switch button depressed? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the left hand door jamb switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  19. Check Wire Between Diode Junction Box & Left Hand Door Jamb Switch

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the center black diode strip from the diode junction box connector. Disconnect the left hand door jamb switch connector. Measure the resistance of the (Red/White) wire between Terminal No. 18 of the diode junction box connector and the left hand door jamb switch connector. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Red/White) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  20. Check Right Hand Door Jamb Switch

    Turn key OFF. Remove the right hand door jamb switch located on the right hand door jamb. Measure the resistance between the (Red/White) wire terminal on the right hand door jamb switch and the mounting screw on the right hand door jamb switch. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms with the door jamb switch button released, and greater than 10,000 ohms with the door jamb switch button depressed? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the right hand door jamb switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  21. Check Wire Between Diode Junction Box & Right Hand Door Jamb Switch

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the center black diode strip from the diode junction box. Disconnect the right hand door jamb switch connector. Measure the resistance of the (Red/White) wire between Terminal No. 18 of the diode junction box connector and the right hand door jamb switch connector. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Red/White) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  22. Check Sliding Door Jamb Switch Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the center black diode strip from the diode junction box. Disconnect the sliding door jamb switch connector located on the sliding door jamb. Use the analog Rotunda Inductive Dwell-Tach-Volts Ohms Tester (059-00010), or equivalent, to measure the resistance between the (Red/White) wire at Terminal No. 18 of the diode junction box connector and the (Red/White) wire (or (Black/White) wire for vehicles with keyless entry) at the sliding door jamb switch connector. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace the sliding door jamb switch. If no, (Without keyless entry) service the (Red/White) wire or (With keyless entry) go to next step.   23. Check Wire Between Diode Junction Box & Keyless Diode

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the center black diode strip from the diode junction box. Disconnect the keyless diode connector located near the bottom of the right hand B-pillar. Measure the resistance of the (Red/White) wire between Terminal No. 18 of the diode junction box connector and the keyless diode connector. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Red/White) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  24. Check Wire Between Keyless Diode & Sliding Door Jamb Switch

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the keyless diode connector. Disconnect the sliding door jamb switch connector. Measure the resistance of the (Black/White) wire between the keyless diode connector and the sliding door jamb switch connector. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace the keyless diode. If no, service the (Black/White) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  25. Check Liftgate Latch Switch Circuit At Diode Junction Box

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the center black diode strip from the diode junction box. Measure the resistance of the (Brown/White) wire between Terminal No. 21 of the diode junction box connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms with the liftgate open and greater than 10,000 ohms with the liftgate closed? If yes, replace the center black diode strip. If no, go to next step. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  26. Check Liftgate Latch Switch Circuit At Liftgate Relay

    Key OFF. Remove the liftgate relay located under the left hand rear cupholder. Measure the resistance of the (Purple) wire between the liftgate relay connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms with the liftgate open and greater than 10,000 ohms with the liftgate closed? If yes, go to step  29 . If no, go to next step. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  27. Check Liftgate Latch Switch

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the liftgate latch switch connector located on the liftgate latch. Measure the resistance between the terminals on the liftgate latch switch. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms with the latch open, and greater than 10,000 ohms with the latch closed? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the liftgate latch switch.
  28. Check Liftgate Latch Switch Ground

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the liftgate latch switch connector. Measure the resistance of the (Black) wire between the liftgate latch switch connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, service the (Purple) wire between the liftgate relay and the liftgate latch switch. If no, service the (Black) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  29. Check Wire Between Diode Junction Box & Liftgate Relay For Open

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the center black diode strip from the diode junction box. Remove the liftgate relay. Measure the resistance of the (Brown/White) wire between Terminal No. 21 of the diode junction box connector and the liftgate relay connector. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, service the (Brown/White) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  30. Check Wire Between Diode Junction Box & Liftgate Relay For Short

    Turn key OFF. Disconnect the center black diode strip from the diode junction box. Remove the liftgate relay. Measure the resistance of the (Brown/White) wire between Terminal No. 21 of the diode junction box connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 1 ohm? If yes, service the (Brown/White) wire between the diode junction box and the liftgate relay. If no, go to next step. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  31. Check Power Supply To Liftgate Relay

    Turn key OFF. Remove the liftgate relay. Measure the voltage on the (Brown) wire at the liftgate relay connector. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to step  33 . If no, go to next step.
  32. Check 10A Room Lamp Fuse

    Turn key OFF. Check the 15A ROOM LAMP fuse located in the interior fuse panel. Is the fuse OK? If yes, service the (Brown) wire between the interior fuse panel and the liftgate relay. If no, replace the 15A ROOM LAMP fuse. If the fuse fails again, service the short in the (Brown) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  33. Check Ground To Liftgate Relay

    Turn key OFF. Remove the liftgate relay. Measure the resistance of the (Black) wire between the liftgate relay connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace the liftgate relay. If no, service the (Black) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  34. Check Low Washer Fluid Warning Lamp Bulb

    Turn key OFF. Remove the instrument cluster. Remove the low washer fluid warning lamp bulb. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the low washer fluid warning lamp bulb. Is the resistance approximately 16 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the low washer fluid warning lamp bulb.
  35. Check Low Washer Fluid Warning Lamp Circuit

    Turn key OFF. Remove the instrument cluster. Leave the instrument cluster connectors connected. Reconnect the low washer fluid warning lamp bulb. Disconnect the low washer fluid switch connector located on the washer fluid reservoir. Ground the (Green/Black) wire at the low washer fluid switch connector. Turn key ON. Does the low washer fluid warning lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  37 . If no, go to next step. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  36. Check Wire Between Instrument Cluster & Low Washer Fluid Switch

    Key OFF. Disconnect the black 12-pin instrument cluster connector. Disconnect the low washer fluid switch connector. Measure the resistance of the (Green/Black) wire between Terminal No. 2K of the black 12-pin instrument cluster connector and the low washer fluid switch connector. Measure the resistance of the (Green/Black) wire between Terminal No. 2K of the black 12-pin instrument cluster connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the instrument cluster connector and the low washer fluid switch connector, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the instrument cluster connector and ground? If yes, replace the instrument cluster printed circuit board. If no, service the (Green/Black) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  37. Check Low Washer Fluid Switch Ground

    Key OFF. Disconnect the low washer fluid switch connector. Measure the resistance of the (Black) wire between the low washer fluid switch connector and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace the low washer fluid switch. If no, service the (Black) wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
