General
Active roll stabilization is implemented by the wheel alignment systems that actively influence the swaying or rolling motion of the vehicle body.
Function
In contrast to passive systems such as stabilizers or torsion bars on the front axle (FA) and rear axle (RA), which (statically) increase the rolling strength of the suspension, active roll stabilization counteracts the applied forces to match the current situation.
Rolling motions should always be differentiated between driver-induced and roadway-induced rolling.
Driver-induced rolling is caused by steering motions that can be felt as transverse forces (yaw, rolling) on the vehicle body.
Roadway-induced rolling occurs when driving over uneven roadways that involve vertical and angular movements around the transverse or longitudinal axis (pitching/rolling), e.g. when driving over obstacles on one side.
In order to actively counteract the vehicle body's rolling motions and ensure an increase in vehicle dynamics, ride comfort and driving safety, the following systems are used:
- Electric active roll stabilization ("EARS")
- Semi-active roll stabilization ("Semi ARS")
