The exhaust gas aftertreatment complements measures on the engine side (e.g. valve train) in order to comply with legally specified limits for emissions in the exhaust gas. It includes exhaust gas cleaning tasks for reducing and filtering the present pollutants of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxide (NOx ). In the context of exhaust gas aftertreatment, exhaust gas recirculation can also help to prevent the formation of pollutants.

The following tables show the limits for the Euro 4, Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission regulations for gasoline and diesel engines:

Function 

The exhaust gas aftertreatment performs its exhaust gas cleaning function by means of catalytic converters and gasoline particulate filters. As part of the catalytic process, catalytic converters convert the pollutants generated during combustion into non-hazardous components. The soot particulate filters have the task of filtering, storing, and burning the soot particles from the exhaust gas and to break them down during regeneration through oxidation. During this process, the soot particle content is reduced by approx. 95 to 99%. As regards construction, the catalytic converters and filters are often installed in one unit. This ensures the compact construction of the engine and exhaust system.

IMPORTANT In the area of exhaust gas aftertreatment, spark-ignition engines work with a catalytic converter that reduces carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide. In the case of diesel engines that work with excess air, additional catalytic converter units are used to remove the NOx in the exhaust gas.

Exhaust gas recirculation ensures that part of the exhaust flow returns to the intake air system, where it is mixed with fresh air. This reduces the exhaust gas temperature and the oxygen content in the exhaust gas, which reduces the formation of nitrogen oxide.
