Remove/Install Rack-And-Pinion Steering - AR46.20-P-0600FR

DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Deactivate easy entry/exit feature Model 257
with code 275 (Memory Package (driver's seat, steering column and mirror))
 
2 Move steering wheel forward and upward    
3 Turn steering wheel to central position (front wheels in straight ahead position) and secure with the retaining device NOTES The steering wheel must not be turned when the steering coupling is removed.
Otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.
SPECIAL TOOL Retainer device

4 Remove front wheels   AR40.10-P-1102A
5 Remove rear and center section of lower engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105FR
6 Detach tie rods from steering knuckles   AR46.40-P-0200FR 
WARNING Risk of injury  . Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities. No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating area of mechanical components when moving components. AS00.00-Z-0009-01A
7 Disconnect steering coupling from steering shaft Separate and connect steering coupling AR46.10-P-8000-01FR 
    Move rack-and-pinion steering (3) to center position
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Before connecting the steering coupling, it must be ensured that the rack-and-pinion steering (3) is in the center position.

    SPECIAL TOOL Engine mount wrench set Fig 3
8 Separate electrical connections (1)    
9.1 Remove bracket for steering electrical wiring harness (2) on left mounting plate (7) and on front axle carrier and place to one side Model 257
except code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
 
9.2 Open cover (8) at connecting point and fold to one side Model 257
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
 
10 Support rack-and-pinion steering (3) and secure to prevent it from falling down    
11 Unscrew bolts (4, 5, 6) and remove rack-and-pinion steering (3) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace the bolts (4, 5, 6) and mounting plates (7).
Fit the bolts (4, 5, 6) first, and then tighten in the following sequence: Bolts (4), bolts (5), bolts (6).
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, electric rack-and-pinion steering to front axle carrier *BA46.20-P-1001-01Q 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, rack-and-pinion steering mounting plate to front axle carrier *BA46.20-P-1002-01Q 
12 Remove retaining clip for bracket for steering electrical wiring harness (2) Model 257
except code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
When replacing the rack-and-pinion steering (3).
 
13 Detach steering coupling from rack-and-pinion steering (3) When replacing the rack-and-pinion steering (3). AR46.10-P-8000FR 
INSPECT Check     
14 Check rack-and-pinion steering (3) Evaluating steering gear when repairing accident vehicles After repairing an accident vehicle.
If a problem arises

Replace rack-and-pinion steering (3).
AH46.20-P-9409-01A 
15 Install in the reverse order    
16 Enter new steering gear number of rack-and-pinion steering (3) in on-line vehicle data card using Vehicle Documentation system (VeDoc) When replacing the rack-and-pinion steering (3).
IMPORTANT Redocumentation is absolutely essential.
 
17 Perform wheel alignment check   AR40.20-P-0200FR
