Central operating unit for entertainment and communication systems integrated into vehicle 

The COMAND controller unit provides the user with a structured and uniform user interface for the following system components:

• Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
• Navigation (map navigation with data from internal hard disk) including extended functions of navigation mode
• Digital operator's manual (interactive)
• Radio
• CD/DVD audio and video
• SD (Secure Digital) card
• AUX jack electrical connection (X39/45)
• USB 1 electrical connector (X115-1)
• USB 2 electrical connector (X115-2)
• Integrated Media Interface to connect iPhones® or Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) devices to USB electrical connector 1 or to USB electrical connector 2 (with code 518 (Media Interface))
• Bluetooth® Audio
• Digital radio (DAB) (with CODE 537 (Digital radio (DAB)))
• Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service (SDARS) (with code 536 (SIRIUS satellite radio))
• TV (with code 865 (TV tuner))
• "In Car Communication" (facilitates communication in the vehicle by amplifying statements of the front seat passengers by outputting them through the rear speakers)

Settings for various vehicle functions (e.g. climate control, seats) can be made via the COMAND controller unit.

Ethernet 

The COMAND controller unit obtains updates for all components connected to the MOST via Ethernet from the diagnostic connector (X11/4).

Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) 

The COMAND controller unit is a MOST subscriber and exchanges signals with the following control units:

• Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code 810 (Sound system) or with code 811 (Advanced sound system))
• Tuner unit (with code 537 (Digital radio (DAB)), with code 536 (SIRIUS satellite radio) or with code 865 (TV tuner))
• Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit (A26/18) (with CODE 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment system))

CAN 

• The COMAND controller unit is a telematics CAN (CAN A) subscriber.
• The COMAND controller unit is a user interface CAN (CAN HMI) subscriber.

Evaluation of input factors 

The input values are processed in the COMAND controller unit.

Activation of output media and system components 

The output media and system components are actuated via the following connections:

• Audio output to speakers (except CODE 810 (Sound system) and except CODE 811 (Advanced sound system))
• Video output: LVDS line transfers picture signals to the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8).

• Mobile phone contact plate (X237/1) (power supply and activation signal) (with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony))

MOST 

• Control communication with MOST subscribers
• With code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System): Media source combination with the Rear Seat Entertainment System control unit
• With CODE 855 (Telephony in rear) or with CODE 856 (Business telephony in rear): Telephony network with the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit
• With code 537 (Digital radio (DAB)): With active digital radio (DAB), the COMAND controller unit sends FM signals received in parallel over the MOST to the tuner unit.

CAN 

• Telematics CAN: Control communication with the Audio/COMAND display, with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System) control communication and audio signals to the left rear display (A40/5) and the right rear display (A40/6)
• User interface CAN: Display information to the instrument cluster

Diagnosis communication 

The COMAND controller unit is the diagnosis gateway for all MOST users. The diagnostic communication between the COMAND controller unit and the diagnostic connector (X11/4) takes place via CAN.

If a mobile phone suitable for near-field communication is brought within the immediate proximity of the field for near-field communication at the COMAND controller unit, it is automatically connected. Data exchange occurs via contactless Near Field Communication.
