Search and symbol illumination

The search and symbol lighting illuminates all control elements as well as the lighting of the vehicle interior. The brightness of the search and symbol lighting can be adjusted manually.

The search and symbol lighting helps the driver to find important control elements and to look for objects in the vehicle without having to switch on the ignition or the exterior lighting.

The search and symbol illumination is switched on by unlocking the vehicle remotely, by opening a vehicle door or by changing the status of circuit 15. The luminosity of the search and symbol lighting can be continuously adjusted using the instrument lighting brightness control in the center instrument panel button group (up to model year 2018) or in the exterior lighting switch (as of model year 2018). The front SAM control unit reads in the signals of the instrument lighting brightness control via the instrument panel LIN (up to model year 2018) or directly (as of model year 2018) and sends them via the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

After unlocking the vehicle or opening a vehicle door, the search and symbol illumination is switched on with 100 % luminosity.

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of the central locking system and the status of circuit 15 over the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

The front door control units send the status of the front doors (open or closed) via the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

The rear door control units (model 222) send the status of the rear doors (open or closed) via the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster evaluates all incoming information, generates the circuit 58d signal and transmits it via the user interface CAN to the following control units to activate the search and symbol illumination:

The instrument cluster directly actuates the instrument cluster illumination (up to model year 2018).

The COMAND controller unit (up to model year 2018) or the head unit (as of model year 2018) actuates the integrated control elements and sends the circuit 58d signal via the telematics CAN to the following control units, which then switch on the integrated control elements:

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 58d signal via the chassis FlexRay to the steering column tube module control unit. The steering column tube module control unit actuates the following components:

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 58d signal over the periphery CAN to the electric parking brake control unit. The electric parking brake control unit actuates the electric parking brake switch directly.

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 58d signal via interior CAN to the following control units:

The active seat belt buckle control unit (model 222 with code 305 (PRE-SAFE in rear)) actuates the following component parts directly:

The front SAM control unit actuates the following components:

The overhead control panel control unit directly actuates the switch, controls and symbol illumination of the integrated controls and the following components:

IMPORTANT The overhead control panel control unit directly actuates the eyeglasses box illumination irrespective of the circuit 58d signal from a circuit 15R ON status onwards.

The climate control control unit actuates the search and symbol illumination of the following components via A/C operating LIN:

The rear control unit (model 217) actuates the following component parts:

The left front door control unit actuates the following components:

The right front door control unit actuates the following components:

The left rear door control unit (model 222) actuates the following component parts:

The right rear door control unit (model 222) actuates the following component parts:

IMPORTANT The door handle lighting is actuated after circuit 15C has been switched off for an additional 2 min (run-on).

Trunk lid control button (model 222 with code 881 (Remote trunk closing), model 217):

If the trunk lid is open, the rear SAM control unit actuates the trunk lid control button at the trunk lid directly, irrespective of the circuit 58d signal. The rear SAM control unit independently evaluates the status of the trunk lid (open or closed).

Trunk lid emergency opening switch symbol illumination (with code 494 (USA version)):

The rear SAM control unit actuates the trunk lid emergency opening switch directly irrespective of the circuit 58d signal. After the trunk lid is closed, the trunk lid emergency opening switch is actuated for 60 min with a frequency of 1 Hz and flashes green. The rear SAM control unit independently evaluates the status of the trunk lid (open or closed).
