Function requirements, general

Ambiance illumination

The ambient lighting feature provides the brightness-adjustable illumination of all control elements as well as the illumination of the vehicle interior.

The ambient lighting is switched on by unlocking the vehicle remotely, by opening a vehicle door or by changing the status of circuit 15. In the process, different areas of the vehicle interior are illuminated indirectly.

The luminosity and color of the ambient lighting be continuously adjusted using the corresponding menu in the COMAND controller unit (up to model year 2018) or in the head unit (as of model year 2018).

Different zones can also be defined using this menu.

The following zones can be selected:

The luminosity can be set in several stages. Several different colors can be selected.

In vehicles as of model year 2018, the color selection can also be made via the voice control system.

The COMAND controller unit (up to model year 2018) or the head unit (as of model year 2018) sends the corresponding information on these settings via the user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN to the front SAM control unit (up to model year 2018)

or to the ambient lighting control unit (as of model year 2018).

IMPORTANT After a vehicle door is opened, the ambient lighting is actuated with 100 % luminosity.

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of the central locking system and the status of circuit 15 via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit (up to model year 2018) or to the ambient lighting control unit (as of model year 2018).

The front door control units sends the status of the front doors (open or closed) via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit (up to model year 2018) or to the ambient lighting control unit (as of model year 2018).

The rear door control units (model 222) sends the status of the rear doors (open or closed) via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit (up to model year 2018) or to the ambient lighting control unit (as of model year 2018).

IMPORTANT The ambient lighting is deactivated 3 s after the vehicle is locked.

Vehicles up to model year 2018:

The front SAM control unit evaluates all of the incoming information and transmits the request to switch on the ambient illumination via interior CAN to the following control units:

The front SAM control unit actuates the following components directly:

The illuminated door sill moldings are actuated with different maximum values when the corresponding door is opened as a function of the ambient brightness. The ambient brightness is detected by the light sensor. The rain/light sensor with additional functions reads in the signals of the light sensor directly, evaluates them and transmits information about the ambient brightness (dimness level) via the rain/light sensor LIN to the front SAM control unit.

The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the ambient lighting via roof LIN to the overhead control panel control unit.

The overhead control panel control unit actuates the following components directly:

The left front door control unit actuates the following components directly:

In vehicles with code 811 (Advanced sound system), the left front door control unit transmits the request to switch on the ambient lighting via the left front door LIN to the left front door tweeter control unit. The left front door tweeter control unit directly actuates the left front door tweeter ambient lighting, mirror triangle.

The right front door control unit actuates the following components directly:

In vehicles with code 811 (Advanced sound system), the right front door control unit transmits the request to switch on the ambient lighting via the right front door LIN to the right front door tweeter control unit.

The right front door tweeter control unit directly actuates the right front door tweeter ambient lighting, mirror triangle.

The left rear door control unit (on model 222) actuates the following component parts directly:

The right rear door control unit (on model 222) actuates the following component parts directly:

IMPORTANT The door handle ambient lighting is actuated after circuit 15C has been switched off for an additional 2 min (run-on).

The rear SAM control unit in model 222 with code 223 (Electrically adjustable rear bench seat) actuates the following component parts:

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the request to switch on the ambient lighting via user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster actuates the following components directly:

Vehicles as of model year 2018:

The ambient lighting control unit evaluates all incoming information and then actuates the following component parts:

IMPORTANT The door handle ambient lighting is actuated after circuit 15C has been switched off for an additional 2 min (run-on).
