Function requirements in general
- "Terminal 15 ON"
Model 447.8 or model 448.8
The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) sends the status of terminal 15 via the chassis CAN (CAN E), the central gateway (N93/4) and the user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit (A1/1).
Model 447.6/7 or model 448.7
The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit sends the status of terminal 15 over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
Trip computer (TRIP) function, general
The trip computer provides data and information on average fuel consumption, trip time, average speed, travel distance and remaining range.
The trip computer provides the following display screens:
- "After start" (short-distance memory)
- "After reset" (long-distance memory)
- "Current fuel consumption"
The information displayed refers to the point in time of the last reset of the short-distance memory ("After start") or of the long-distance memory ("After reset").
The "After start" or "After reset" information is shown in the multifunction display (A1/1p13) of the instrument cluster (IC) control unit as follows:
- "Traveled distance"
- "Time elapsed"
- "Average consumption"
- "Average transportation speed"
The TRIP computer includes the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence, travel distance display after start/after reset
- Function sequence, time display after start/after reset
- Function sequence for the average speed display
- Function sequence for display of present consumption and composite mileage
- Function sequence for remaining distance display
- Function sequence for display reset.
Function sequence, travel distance display after start/after reset
The travel distance is calculated from the wheel speed.
Model 447.8 or model 448.8
The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit (N30/4) sends information on the wheel speed via the chassis CAN, the central gateway and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
Model 447.6/7 or model 448.7
The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit sends information on the wheel speed over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster (IC [KI]) control unit.
The instrument cluster (IC) control unit uses the wheel speed to calculate the traveled distance. The distance "After start" is displayed in a range of 0 to 9999 km.
If there is a period of more than 4 h between the time when terminal 15 is switched off and then switched on again, the "After start" odometer is automatically reset to "0".
If the distance value is between 6213 and 9999 and the distance unit is changed (e.g. from kilometers to miles), the odometer will automatically be reset to "0". This reset remains active even if the unit is changed again. Distance units are changed in the "settings" menu in the "instrument cluster" submenu. The distance unit can be changed from kilometers to miles in the "speedometer/travel distance display unit" display window.
The distance "After reset" is calculated in the same way as the distance "After start"; however, the display here ranges from 0 to 99, 999 km.
Depending on the setting in the instrument cluster (IC) control unit and coding of the national version, the travel distance is displayed in:
- Kilometers, (e.g Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), Japan)
- Miles, (e.g. USA, Australia)
Switching over from kilometers to miles causes an automatic switchover from liters to gallons.
Function sequence, time display after start/after reset
With "terminal 15 ON", the time after start is added up by means of a time counter. The display ranges from 0 to 999 h and 59 min.
The time after reset is determined in the same way as the time after start, although the display in this case ranges from 0 to 9999 h and 59 min.
Function sequence for the average speed display
The trip computer calculates the average speed from the ratio between the travel distance driven and the time passed (trip time) since the last reset of the short-distance memory or long-distance memory. The travel distance is calculated in the instrument cluster (IC) control unit based on the wheel speed.
Depending on the setting (kilometers/miles) and the national variant coding of the instrument cluster (IC) control unit, the average speed is displayed in:
- km/h (kilometers per hour)
- mph (miles per hour)
Function sequence for display of present consumption and composite mileage
Model 447.8 or model 448.8
The CDI control unit or the ME control unit sends information on the fuel consumption over the chassis CAN, the central gateway and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
Model 447.6/7 or model 448.7
The CDI control unit or the ME control unit sends information on the fuel consumption over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
The trip computer uses this data to calculate the following information:
- Present consumption, composite mileage
- Travel distance covered "After start" or "After reset"
Depending on the setting (kilometers/miles) and the national variant coding of the instrument cluster (IC) control unit, the fuel consumption is displayed in:
- l/100 km (liters per 100 kilometers)
- mpg (miles per gallon)
- km/l (kilometers per liter)
The present consumption is displayed together with the range. The display is in the form of a bar.
Function sequence for remaining distance display
The trip computer determines the expected range from the ratio between the current tank capacity and the average fuel consumption.
The fill level of the fuel tank is detected by the fill level sensor integrated in the fuel pump with fuel feed module (M3/3).
The fill level of the fuel tank is detected by the fuel pump with fill level sensor (M3/6) (with engine 274).
Model 447.8 or model 448.8
The fuel system control unit (FSCU) (N118) directly reads in the signals of the fill level sensor. It sends information on the fill level of the fuel tank via the drive train CAN (CAN C), the CDI control unit or ME control unit, the chassis CAN, the central gateway and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
Model 447.6/7 or model 448.7
The fuel system control unit (FSCU) directly reads in the signals of the fill level sensor. It sends information on the fill level of the fuel tank over the drive train CAN, the CDI control unit or ME control unit and chassis CAN to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
Function sequence for display reset
With Code CL4 (Multifunction steering wheel with trip computer)
The trip computer can be reset in the "Reset values" menu by pressing the "OK" button at the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110). Here, the reset is only carried out for the currently displayed information.
The steering wheel electronics (N135) directly reads in the status of the "OK" button and sends this status via the steering LIN (LIN E1) to the steering column tube module (MRM) control unit (N80).
Model 447.8 or model 448.8
The steering column tube module (MRM) control unit sends the status of the "OK" button over the chassis CAN, the central gateway and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
Model 447.6/7 or model 448.7
The steering column tube module (MRM) control unit sends the status of the "OK" button over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
Without CODE CL4 (Multifunction steering wheel with trip computer) (model 447.6/7 or model 448.7)
The trip computer is reset in the "Reset values" menu by pressing the following buttons on the instrument cluster (IC) control unit:
- Menu button (A1/1s2)
- Reset button (A1/1s1)
