Windshield Wiper, Function - GF82.30-S-3004TRB

Function requirements, general 

IMPORTANT The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) sends the status of circuit 15 via the interior CAN (CAN B) to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1).

The humidity sensor/light sensor/rain sensor (B38/2) is installed.

The humidity sensor/light sensor/rain sensor/sun sensor (B38/3) is installed.

The windshield wiper function is comprised of the following subfunctions:

Intermittent wipe function sequence 

The intermittent wipe function is activated by turning the combination switch (S4) into switch position "1" or switch position "2".

IMPORTANT When the system is switched from switch position "0" to switch position "1" or "2", there is an automatic wipe cycle, the so-called "Reaction wipe".

The steering column tube module (MRM) control unit (N80) directly reads in the switch position of the combination switch and transmits this via the chassis CAN (CAN E), electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit, and interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

Vehicles without rain sensor (without CODE JF1 (Rain sensor) and without CODE HH4 (THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control)) 

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit actuates the wiper motor (M6/1) depending on the switch position over the engine compartment fuse and relay module (K40/10).

Vehicles with rain sensor (with CODE JF1 (Rain sensor) or with CODE HH4 (THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control)) 

Moisture on the windshield is detected by the humidity sensor/light sensor/rain sensor/sun sensor or humidity sensor/light sensor/rain sensor and evaluated. It then sends the degree of wetness on the windshield via roof LIN (LIN B13) back to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit then calculates the frequency of wiping procedures based on the switch position of the combination switch before actuating the wiper motor over the engine compartment fuse and relay module.

The intermittent wipe function is interrupted under the following conditions:

Single wipe function sequence 

The single wipe function can only be activated if the combination switch is set to switch position "0", "1" or "2". If the windshield wiper is not located in the rest position, the request of the combination switch is ignored.

The single wipe function is activated by briefly pressing the multifunction switch up to the catch point.

IMPORTANT If the combination switch is pressed for longer, wiping takes place for as long as it is pressed, but only for a maximum of 30 s. If the combination switch is pressed and held longer than 30 s in the "0" switch position, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit judges this to be a "stuck combination switch" and interrupts the single wipe function despite a pending request.

The steering column tube module (MRM) control unit directly reads in the switch position of the combination switch and sends this via the chassis CAN, electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit, and interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit. The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit then actuates the wiper motor accordingly via the engine compartment fuse and relay module.

The speed at which the windshield wipers are moved corresponds to the wiping speed in switch position "3" (continuous wipe at low speed).

The single wipe function is interrupted under the following conditions:

Function sequence of wiping at specified speed 

The wipe function with predefined speed is activated by turning the combination switch to switch position "3" (continuous wipe at slow speed) or switch position "4" (continuous wipe at fast speed). The steering column tube module (MRM) control unit directly reads in the switch position of the combination switch and sends this via the chassis CAN, electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit, and interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit. The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit then actuates the wiper motor accordingly via the engine compartment fuse and relay module.

The wash function with predefined speed is interrupted under the following conditions

Function sequence for interrupting wiping during engine start 

The CDI control unit (N3/33) (with engine 651.9) or CDI control unit (N3/36) (with engine 622) or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/34) (with engine 274) sends the "Engine start, request" signal via chassis CAN, electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit and interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit. The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit blocks the actuation of the wiper motor.

Any wiping procedure already started is interrupted while the engine is started and continues to run after the engine start.

Wiper start suppression function sequence 

Additional function requirements for wiper start suppression 

IMPORTANT Information on vehicle speed is sent by the instrument cluster (IC [KI]) control unit (A1/1) over the chassis CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit (EZS) and the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

The wiper startup suppression is intended to prevent people from being sprayed with water from the windshield when getting in or out of the vehicle as the result of an initiated wipe operation. The windshield wipers remain in the park position despite a wipe request triggered manually or automatically.

If one of the front doors is opened during wiping, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit interrupts the actuation of the wiper motor.

The opening of the left front door is detected by the status of the left front door control unit (N69/3). The left front door control unit sends the status via the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

The opening of the right front door is detected by the status of the right front door control unit (N69/4). The right front door control unit sends the status via the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit reads in all relevant information, evaluates it, and interrupts the actuation of the wiper motor. An already started wiping procedure is not interrupted immediately. The wipers continue to move to the park position.

The wiper start suppression is deactivated under the following circumstances:

Additional function requirements for automatic speed reduction of the windshield wiper system 

It is assumed that the windshield does not become as wet at slow speeds. For this reason, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit reduces the wiper speed as soon as a vehicle speed of v > 6 km/h to v < 3 km/h is detected.

The instrument cluster (IC [KI]) control unit sends the vehicle speed signal over the chassis CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit (EZS) and the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

The automatic speed reduction function of the windshield wiper system is interrupted under the following conditions:

After wiping function sequence 

The after wiping function is activated as soon as the combination switch is no longer activated after a wash request.

The number of afterwipe cycles depends on the combination switch actuation time:

Additional function requirements for wipe stop 

IMPORTANT The wipe stop function is dependent upon the engine hood switch (S62/41). This in turn is only installed in vehicles with CODE MJ8 (ECO start/stop function) or with CODE FY1 (Theft protection package) or with CODE FZ5 (Anti-theft alarm system) or with CODE EZ7 (Active Parking Assist).

The wipe stop function prevents the wiper motor from being actuated by the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit when the engine hood is open and thus causing damage to the vehicle. If the engine hood is opened while driving (vehicle speed < 3 km/h), the front signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit immediately stops the wiper motor actuation.

At a vehicle speed of v > 6 km/h, the wiper stop function is deactivated, i.e. the wiper motor is actuated again from this speed onwards.

The open engine hood is detected via the status of the engine hood switch. The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit directly reads in the status of the engine hood switch.
