The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) sends the status of terminal 15 over the chassis CAN (CAN E) to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit (A1/1).
Model 447.8
The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit sends the status of terminal 15 over the chassis CAN, the central gateway (N93/4) and the user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
Control/warning messages, general
The control/warning messages from the instrument cluster (IC) control unit notify the driver about the current states of the systems installed in the vehicle.
The instrument cluster (IC) control unit can issue control and warning messages in the following ways:
- Optical output of control/warning messages:
- The output is shown on the display (A1/1p13) or via the indicator and warning lamps.
- Acoustic output of control/warning messages:
- Output via the instrument cluster speaker (H4/61).

The messages shown on the display are split up into 4 categories according to their level of urgency:
- Category 1
(messages with highest priority):
- Category 1 messages refer to states and situations which impair safety, and they take priority over messages with low priority.
- These messages are displayed within max. 2 s after they occur, stored automatically in the message memory and cannot be acknowledged. When they occur, a brief acoustic warning is emitted over the instrument cluster speaker.
- Category 2
(messages with medium priority):
- Category 2 messages require the intervention of the driver and appear after a delay of max. 2 s. These messages also include operating feedback.
- Category 2 messages can be acknowledged. When they occur, a brief acoustic warning is emitted over the instrument cluster speaker.
- Category 3 and 4
(messages with lower priority):
- These messages are shown in the menu and they are only for providing information to the driver (e.g. low washer fluid level). No warning chime is emitted.
Messages with lower priority are overlaid by messages with high priority. If several messages with the same priority occur, the message currently displayed is cross-faded by the new message after expiry of the minimum display time.
Function sequence for control/warning messages
The instrument cluster (IC) control unit informs the driver about the functionality and state of the systems installed in the vehicle. Safety-relevant system activities or system malfunctions are shown to the driver in the form of control and warning messages in the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
The following display options are provided for this purpose:

AdBlue® fluid level display message
The display in the instrument cluster (IC) control unit shows the following control and warning messages for supplying AdBlue® fluid:
- "Refill AdBlue®"
In addition, a warning tone sounds as the AdBlue® supply has fallen below the reserve mark (approx. 8 l).
- "Refill AdBlue®. Limp-home mode in xx km"
An acoustic warning also sounds. The AdBlue® supply has almost been consumed and is only sufficient for the displayed travel distance.
- "20 km/h, no start xx km"
An acoustic warning also sounds. AdBlue® supply is exhausted. The vehicle can still be driven 50 km with a maximum of 20 km/h. When the engine is switched off, the engine management prevents a repeat engine start.
At a residual range of 0 km, the engine is prevented from starting. For the engine to start again, at least 4 l of AdBlue® fluid must be refilled. The key in the ignition lock must then be rotated to position "2" so that the engine management can check the new fill level. After approx. 1 min, the engine can be re-started.
Special case of country-dependent seat belt reminder warning
If a seat belt is detected as not fastened, the instrument cluster (IC) control unit issues a country-specific visual and acoustic seat belt warning.
The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit (N2/18) sends information on the status of the driver and front passenger seat belts to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
The instrument cluster (IC) control unit evaluates this information for issuing a country-specific seat belt reminder warning.
The seat belt reminder message for the front passenger is only issued, if the front passenger seat is recognized as occupied. Corresponding information on the seat occupancy recognition is transmitted by the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
If a seat belt is not fastened, the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit sends a corresponding signal to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
The nature and method of the seat belt warning output varies depending on whether or not the seat belt warning is required by law. This is incorporated into the assessment by the "New Car Assessment Program" (NCAP).
NCAP is an assessment program for safety in new vehicles:
- Countries with legally prescribed seat belt warning (extended NCAP): USA and Canada.
- Countries without legally prescribed seat belt warning
("European New Car Assessment Program" (Euro NCAP)): Europe, China, Australia, Japan, Arab States of the Gulf and Korea.
In countries where a seat belt warning is prescribed by law (extended NCAP), the seat belt warning lamp is activated for a time interval of 6 (±2) s.
It is irrelevant here whether the driver seat belt is fitted or not. If the driver's seat belt is not fastened, the instrument cluster (IC) control unit also issues a warning tone via the instrument cluster speaker (H4/61).
If the driver seat belt is fitted during this time interval, the acoustic warning is canceled.
An assessment of whether the front passenger seat belt is fitted or not given during this time interval. Only after the time interval of 6 s has expired does the evaluation of both seat belts occur. In countries in which the seat belt warning is not prescribed by law, the seat belt warning lamp is only actuated during the indicator lamp test.
As soon as engine start is detected ("Engine running" signal or "Drivetrain operational" set), information on the status of the driver and front passenger seat belts is evaluated.
If a seat belt is defined as not fastened, the instrument cluster (IC) control unit actuates the seat belt warning lamp. If the vehicle starts to move, multiple warning tone phases are output once it reaches a speed of ≥ 25 km/h.
3 or 4 warning tone phases are output according to the issued seat belt warning. While these warning tone phases are output, the seat belt warning lamp flashes on and off at a frequency of 2 Hz.
After all the acoustic warning phases have expired the seat belt warning lamp is permanently actuated.
- Warning tone phase 1:
- If the vehicle drives off, warning tone phase 1 starts to run in the background. When a speed of ≥ 25 km/h is reached, a quiet warning tone is output at intervals of 4 s. Warning tone phase 1 lasts for maximum 20 s.
Following this, the warning tone phase transitions into warning tone phase 2.
- If the vehicle drives off, warning tone phase 1 starts to run in the background. When a speed of ≥ 25 km/h is reached, a quiet warning tone is output at intervals of 4 s. Warning tone phase 1 lasts for maximum 20 s.
- Warning tone phase 2:
- When warning tone phase 1 has finished and a speed of at least 25 km/h has been reached, a quiet warning tone is issued for maximum 20 s at intervals of 2 s.
Following this, the warning tone phase transitions into warning tone phase 3.
- When warning tone phase 1 has finished and a speed of at least 25 km/h has been reached, a quiet warning tone is issued for maximum 20 s at intervals of 2 s.
- Warning tone phase 3:
- When warning tone phase 2 has finished and a speed of ≥ 25 km/h has been reached, a quiet warning tone is issued for maximum 20 s at intervals of 1 s.
Following this, the warning tone phase transitions into warning tone phase 4.
- When warning tone phase 2 has finished and a speed of ≥ 25 km/h has been reached, a quiet warning tone is issued for maximum 20 s at intervals of 1 s.
- Warning tone phase 4:
- When warning tone phase 3 has finished and a speed of ≥ 25 km/h has been reached, a loud warning tone is issued for maximum 93 s at intervals of 0.5 s.
Cancellation of seat belt reminder warning:
- The last acoustic warning phase is fully completed.
- The seat belt was fitted during the active seat belt reminder warning.
- When the vehicle is stationary the vehicle door on the actuating side is opened.
Seat belt reminder warning reactivation:
- Seat belt release has been detected again.
- If the vehicle is at a standstill and the driver or front passenger door is opened and then closed again.
- A new ignition cycle is detected from the time the "Engine running" or "Drivetrain operational" signal is set.
