AMG DRIVE UNIT, general
The functions of the AMG DRIVE UNIT are described in this description.
The Drive Unit control unit operates with the following systems:
- Active rear wing via aerodynamics LIN
- Electric differential lock via AMG CAN
- Active engine mount via AMG CAN
Furthermore, the following component parts connected via the Drive Unit CAN:
- Left and right lower control panel
- DIRECT SELECT INTERFACE
The Drive Unit control unit acts as an interface of the AMG CAN for the following networks:
- Drive train CAN
- User interface CAN
- Drive Unit CAN
- Chassis FlexRay

AMG steering wheel buttons
For vehicles with code U88 (AMG steering wheel buttons (AMG DRIVE UNIT)), the following settings can be carried out through the lower multifunction steering wheel button group 1 or the lower multifunction steering wheel button group 2, for example: ESP®, suspension, transmission, engine start/stop, exhaust flap control and transmission mode.
Active rear wing, general
In contrast to the electrical rear spoilers used in other model series, the active rear wing of model series 290 is a safety relevant system. The position of the rear wing is abundantly transmitted via several sensors to the Drive Unit control unit via the aerodynamics LIN.
The rear wing can be extended and retracted manually independently of the automatic actuation logic via a button in the right lower control panel. If the rear wing is manually extended via the button, this always goes to the highest position and remains there for the ignition cycle. If the ignition is switched off, the system changes into automatic mode again. Manual retraction is only executed if the predefined speed threshold permits this.
Function sequence of active rear wing
The ESP® control unit transmits the speed signal to the Drive Unit control unit. Depending on the selected drive program, the rear wing is extended and retracted again automatically in a predefined vehicle speed range. Here, the corresponding position is selected depending on the speed. For this, the DRIVE UNIT control unit transmits the request "Extend rear wing" or "Retract rear wing" to the rear wing control unit via the aerodynamics LIN. The rear wing is extended or retracted.
To monitor the position of the rear wing, the sensors integrated into the rear wing mechanics transmit the corresponding position of the rear wing.
The position of the rear wing actuator motor is also recorded via the rear wing actuator motor position sensor.
If there are system malfunctions, the highest position of the rear wing is set and maintained up to the next ignition cycle, if possible. If this is not possible, the vehicle speed is limited. Generally, messages and corresponding symbols are displayed in the instrument cluster or the button of the rear wing in the event of malfunctions.
Function sequence for electric differential lock and active engine mount
The Drive Unit control unit reads in the signals of various sensors. As a result of these signals, it calculates the specified status of the active engine mount and the locking ratio of the electronic differential lock and forwards these onto the corresponding control units.
The Drive Unit control unit transmits the "Mount specified status" signal via the AMG CAN to the active engine mount control unit, which actuates the active engine mounts via a direct line. For actuation of the electronic differential lock, the Drive Unit control unit transmits the "Electronic differential lock locking ratio" signal via the AMG CAN to the electric differential lock control unit. The electric differential lock control unit actuates the differential lock actuator via a direct line.
Function sequence of switch panel
The signals of the buttons on the left and right lower control panel are read in via the Drive Unit CAN. The Drive Unit control unit transmits the signals to the corresponding control units via the CAN network.
The Drive Unit control unit also receives signals from the touchpad, the Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) and from the upper control panel control unit, which are forwarded to the corresponding control units over the LCP-LIN.
DIRECT SELECT INTERFACE function sequence
The signals of the DIRECT SELECT INTERFACE are read in via the Drive Unit CAN. The drive range is selected and the park pawl is engaged using the DIRECT SELECT INTERFACE. The Drive Unit control unit forwards the signals to the fully integrated transmission control electric controller unit control unit via the CAN network.
