Function requirements, general 

IMPORTANT The electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) sends the status of circuit 15 via chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1) to the supplemental restraint system control unit (N2/10).

Passenger-side seat occupied recognition, general 

The passenger-side seat occupied recognition detects whether the front passenger seat is occupied and whether a child seat is fitted.

IMPORTANT The automatic child seat recognition function is only guaranteed to work with a child seat that has been approved and coded by Daimler AG. This child seat must be equipped with two transponders (resonators), which are located at the left and right in its base.

The passenger-side seat occupied recognition function includes the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for seat occupied recognition 

The front passenger seat occupancy as well as the child seat recognition are detected by the front passenger seat occupied and automatic child seat recognition (B48). The following situations are defined:

Pedestrian detection: 

If the front passenger seat is occupied by a person, the pressure load of the seat area increases. As a result, the resistance of the force sensing resistors changes. If the pressure on the seat cushion exceeds a defined value, the electronic analysis system recognizes that the front passenger seat is occupied by a person and sends a corresponding signal over the seat occupancy LIN (LIN E2) to the supplemental restraint system control unit. Once the seat is no longer occupied, the occupied signal remains pending for a brief period. This provides protection from an immediate shutoff of all safety equipment if the weight is removed from the front passenger seat for a short time.

Automatic child seat recognition: 

When a child seat is in position, the signals that are transmitted by the electronic analysis system via the transmission antennas in the front passenger seat occupied recognition and ACSR [AKSE] are modified by the resonators in the child seat. These signals are received by the respective receiving antennas in the front passenger seat occupied recognition and ACSR [AKSE] and forwarded to the electronic analysis system. The electronic analysis system evaluates the signals and sends the current status (e.g. child seat present or not, child seat positioned incorrectly) via seat occupancy LIN to the supplemental restraint system control unit. Through evaluation of the two signals, it is also possible to determine how the child seat is oriented (in or opposite the direction of travel).

Function sequence for issuing status and fault messages 

If a child seat is detected, the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp (N72/1e1) in the upper control panel (N72/1) is switched on.

The supplemental restraint system control unit transmits the request for switching on the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp via chassis CAN 1, the electronic ignition lock control unit, the interior CAN (CAN B), the SAM control unit (N10) and the battery sensor LIN (LIN B15) to the upper control panel control unit, which then actuates the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp accordingly.

Fault messages: 

In case of an error (e.g. seat occupied recognition and front passenger seat ACSR defective, child seat positioned incorrectly, connection to supplemental restraint system control unit disrupted), the following indicator lamps are switched on:

A fault code is also stored in the supplemental restraint system control unit and an appropriate message appears in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster. The Supplemental Restraint System control unit sends the corresponding requests via the chassis CAN 1, electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2) to the instrument cluster.
