General 

The Rear Seat Entertainment system refers to the entire entertainment system for rear passengers.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system comprises the following main components:

• Rear Seat Entertainment system module (A96)
• Left rear display (A40/5) (with integrated DVD player)
• Right rear display (A40/6) (with integrated DVD player)
• Remote control
• Infrared headphones (cordless) or cabled headphones

The cable-connected headphones are not part of the package contents.

The menus and submenus can be operated through the following controls on the remote control:

• "Control buttons with Enter button": Navigate the user interface of the screen on the respective display in 4 directions and select menus or submenus using "Enter"
• "VOL": Control the volume of the selected audio source (disc, TV, AUX, SD (Secure Digital) card or USB (Universal Serial Bus))
• "Skip forward" or "Skip back": Skip forward or back when selecting the titles/chapters with disc functions, MP3-, or image files
• "INPUT": Switch between different data media (such as DVD, USB, SD card, AUX 1 (signal input) or AUX 2 (connection to the other display))
• "TITLE": Call up the menu stored on the data medium
• "SETUP": Switch from the basic display into the control menu

The control signals are transmitted to the remote control and the respective display over the infrared interfaces.

A headphones socket (green) is integrated into each display, to which headphones can be directly connected (cable). The volume is adjusted via the "VOL" control on the remote control. In addition, the preset volume can also be adjusted by the volume control of the respective headphones.

To increase the quality of the audio playback via the infrared headphones, the volume on the respective display should be set to maximum.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system consists of the following partial functions:

• Switch on/off characteristics 
• System settings 
• Disk applications 
• AUX applications 
• USB or SD card applications

Switch on/off characteristics 

The Rear Seat Entertainment system is switched on or off via the "ON/OFF" control either on the remote control or on the desired display.

The remote control must be directed towards the desired display here.

After it has been switched on, the "Mercedes-Benz" basic display appears. Then, the last application stored in the left rear display or right rear display is output, if the data source remains unchanged.

When switching off, the last application used on the display is stored in the respective display.

The switch-on and switch-off function consists of the following subfunctions:

• Switch on and off using the remote control 
• Automatic switch-off by turning the transmitter key (A8/1) to the lock position 

Switch on and off using the remote control 

The switch-on signal of the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control is transmitted via the infrared interface on the remote control and on the respective display. It is processed internally by the display.

At the same time, the respective display generates the picture signals for the "Mercedes-Benz" basic display for approximately 6 s.

The respective display then shows the applications last stored. The switch-off signal of the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control is transmitted via the infrared interfaces on the remote control and on the respective display. It is processed internally by the display.

Automatic switch-off by turning the transmitter key to lock position 

If the transmitter key on the electronic ignition lock control unit is turned to the lock position, the Rear Seat Entertainment system is switched off directly.

The display uses the received status to generate the indication on the display.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system module and the respective displays receive the status of circuit 15R OFF (transmitter key is removed or only inserted) via direct lines from the electronic ignition lock control unit.

System settings 

The "SETUP" button on the remote control permits access to the basic settings in the control menu.

In the following menu items that appear, additional settings or operations can be made following switch-on:

• "DVD": Playback settings for CDs/DVDs (for example, display, audio or child safety configurations)
• "AUDIO": System settings for audio output and prevention of audio frequency overlaps (for example, bass, treble, infrared channels (A or B))
• "PICTURE" (for example, saturation, sharpness, contrast)
• "LANGUAGE": Operating language

The menus and submenus are selected as well as operated or adjusted on the display using the control buttons with the Enter button on the remote control.

The infrared headphones must be assigned to one display each via channel setting (A or B) due to potential audio frequency overlaps. To do this, the same channel must be set for a pair on the display and on the headphones.

Function requirements for disc applications 

• Rear Seat Entertainment system is switched on
• Audio CD or DVD, video DVD, MP3-CD or DVD, JPEG CD or DVD is inserted into the DVD drive of the desired display

Disk applications 

After the CD/DVD has been inserted, the video, audio or picture source is recognized automatically.

If a CD/DVD is already in the drive of the display when the Rear Seat Entertainment system is switched on, the stored menu of the disc can be called up with the "TITLE" button on the remote control. It is then possible to switch between the different data media using the "INPUT" button. A distinction is made here between the following media:

• Video DVD
• Audio CD or DVD
• MP3-CD or DVD
• JPEG CD or DVD (picture files)

Playback a disc 

The DVD drive integrated into the display decodes the digital data of the inserted disc (e. g., video DVD, audio CD or DVD, MP3-CD or DVD, JPEG CD or DVD) and forwards these internally to the display. The menus and their submenus for the file format of the CD/DVD are shown on the display.

The additional operations or settings can now be made using the remote control or the buttons on the respective display.

The remote control signals are sent over the infrared interfaces of the remote control and the respective display. The signals from the buttons on the display are processed internally.

Transferring audio and picture signals for disc applications 

The digital picture signals from the DVD player of the display are transmitted internally to the screen and output.

The digital audio signals from the DVD player of the display are forwarded internally to the infrared transmitter to be received from the respective infrared headphones (cordless). The volume is adjusted using the remote control on the display and the integrated volume control of the headphones (cordless). If headphones (cabled) are connected to the headphones connection of the respective display, the digital audio signals are transmitted via the headphones connection to the headphones (cabled).

Operating instructions for disc applications 

The video, audio or picture source is detected automatically.

When a video DVD is detected, the stored menu guidance of the DVD is called up automatically and is therefore subject to the individual representation.

When audio, MP3- or JPEG CD/DVDs are detected, the file menu is divided into 4 areas:

• A horizontal bar located at the top shows information on the playback time (audio, MP3), total time (audio, MP3), current playback mode (playback/pause for audio, MP3) and current folder.
• The horizontal bar underneath contains information on the current path.
• In a list underneath on the left, files and folders can be selected with the remote control or using the "Control button", "Stop" and "Playback/pause" button on the display.
• The picture window to the right shows JPEG files as a preview picture.

Function requirements for AUX applications 

• Rear Seat Entertainment system is switched on
• Video units or audio equipment are connected to the AUX connection of the left rear display, the right rear display

AUX applications 

The AUX connection of a display can be used to connect additional video or audio equipment (e. g., portable DVD players, cameras, MP3players, iPods, iPhones, smartphones or game consoles) to the Rear Seat Entertainment system. No device-specific user interfaces are provided for these video units or audio equipment by the respective display when AUX is used. The video or audio devices are operated using the video or audio device itself.

The connected media sources are played back by the Rear Seat Entertainment system if they are manually selected via "AUX".

If a video source or an audio source is connected, this is then automatically recognized.

If a video unit or a audio equipment is connected to the AUX connection of a display, the depiction of the menu stored in the video unit or audio equipment takes place on the respective display that is switched on.

The "AUX applications" function in the Rear Seat Entertainment system is made up of the following subfunctions:

• Video unit detected 
• Audio equipment detected 
• Transferring audio and picture signals for AUX applications 

Video unit detected 

The display automatically recognizes when a video unit is connected to an AUX connection.

The display uses transferred data from the video unit to generate analog or digital video and audio signals and the digital user interface of the stored menu from the audio equipment on the display.

The remote control signals are sent over the infrared interfaces of the remote control and the respective display.

Audio equipment detected 

The display automatically recognizes when an audio equipment is connected to an AUX connection.

The display uses transferred data from the audio equipment to generate analog and digital audio signals and the digital user interface of the stored menu from the audio equipment on the display.

The remote control signals are sent over the infrared interfaces of the remote control and the respective display.

Transferring audio and picture signals for AUX applications 

After the analog picture signals have been received on the AUX connection, the respective display generates the digital picture signals and displays them on the screen.

After the analog audio signals have been received on the AUX connection, the respective display generates the digital audio signals and transmits them via the infrared interface to the respective headphones (cordless). If headphones (cabled) are connected to the headphones connection of the respective display, the digital audio signals are transmitted via the headphones connection to the headphones (cabled).

The volume is adjusted via the "VOL" control on the remote control.

Additionally, the volume can be adjusted via the volume control of the particular headphones. The signals from the "VOL" control on the remote control are transferred via the infrared interfaces on the remote control and the respective display.

Function requirements for USB or SD card applications 

• Rear Seat Entertainment system is switched on

USB or SD card applications 

After a USB device has been connected to the USB connector of the left rear display or the right rear display, the video, audio or picture source is recognized automatically.

When an SD card is inserted into the SD card slot on the left rear display or the right rear display, the video, audio or picture source is recognized automatically.

If an USB device or an SD card is already inserted into the respective display when the Rear Seat Entertainment system is switched on, the stored menu can be called up on the data media using the "TITLE" button on the remote control. It is then possible to switch between the different data media using the "INPUT" button. A distinction is made here between the following media:

• Video data
• Audio data
• MP3 data
• JPEG data (picture files)

The "USB or SD card applications" function comprises the following partial functions:

• Playback of data storage medium 
• Transferring audio and picture signals for USB or SD card applications

Playback of data storage medium 

The display decodes the digital data of the USB device or the SD card (e. g., video data, audio data, MP3-, JPEG data). The menus and their submenus for the file format of the different data are shown on the display.

Selection of extra operations or settings can now be made using the listed controls on the remote control or on the corresponding display (see operating instructions).

The remote control signals are sent over the infrared interfaces of the remote control and the respective display. The signals from the buttons on the display are processed internally.

The digital picture signals from the USB device or the SD card are transmitted internally to the screen and output.
