Mobile telephone system, general
Equipment and use variants of mobile phone system:
- Basic telephony
- Telephony (with code EG1 (Car telephony))
- Telephony (with code EH6 (Contactless charging system for mobile phones))
All the variants use Bluetooth® technology for data transfer.
An authorized mobile phone can also be used as a modem for accessing the Internet or as a playback device as part of Bluetooth® audio.
The head unit sends and receives telephone signals over the Bluetooth® antenna. The head unit also generates the display messages and sends the corresponding data to the Audio/COMAND display over the HSVL line. If the head unit is not switched on, it can be activated using the "ON" button in the lower control panel at the right. The lower control panel at the right sends the status of the volume control button to the head unit over thew UBF-LIN, Audio/COMAND control panel and the telematics CAN.
The mobile phone system is described using the example of basic telephony. The special equipment features are summarized at the end of this document.
The mobile phone system includes the following areas:

Bluetooth®
Using Bluetooth®, it is possible to quickly and easily connect mobile terminals that support the corresponding profiles to the mobile phone system. Bluetooth® is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth® devices (e.g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth®, in addition to the wide availability of Bluetooth® devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth® devices. The relatively high data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of a Bluetooth® network also make the use of Bluetooth® in the vehicle interesting. The head unit can integrate mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy over the mobile phone's Bluetooth® interface and the Bluetooth® antenna. The head unit automatically searches for the last two connected mobile phones and connects to the mobile phone that responds first.
If the mobile phone is not connected with the head unit automatically or if the head unit is to establish a connection with a different mobile phone, the connection must be established manually via the basic telephone function. Authorized mobile phones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized mobile phones must be authorized first. Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized at the same time. If a new mobile phone is to be authorized when there are already 15 authorized mobile phones, the user is prompted to delete one of the existing data records. Detailed information on authorization can be found in the respective operator's manual.
Switch on/off characteristics
The mobile phone is switched ON/OFF via the mobile phone itself. The Personal Identification Number (PIN) must then, where set, be entered in the mobile phone. If the subscriber identification module (SIM) has been authorized, the mobile phone registers with the mobile phone network of the respective provider. The mobile phone network provider and signal level are displayed in the status bar of the Audio/COMAND display. The Bluetooth® setting must be enabled in the mobile phone.
If the mobile phone was manually or automatically switched OFF or if the Bluetooth® setting is switched OFF, the message "Ready for Bluetooth® Telephony" is displayed in the Audio/COMAND display. The head unit then searches again for the last authorized mobile phones.
The head unit can be switched on or off using the "ON" button on the lower control panel at the right.
Call signal
The head unit receives the call signal of the mobile phone via the Bluetooth® antenna. The head unit then switches the active audio source to "Mute" and shows the caller ID in the Audio/COMAND display. To do this, the head unit transmits the corresponding data to the Audio/COMAND display via the HSVL line. The ringing tone is output via the speaker system. The head unit directly actuates the speaker system or sends corresponding signals over the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code EU8 (Burmester 3DSound system)). If the mobile phone supports in-band ringing, the ring tone of the mobile phone is output, a standard ring tone is otherwise output.
Establish, end, accept, reject or toggle call
Telephone numbers can be entered using a character bar on the Audio/COMAND display or they can be searched for and selected in call lists or in the address book.
The mobile phone system can be operated using the following components:
- Mobile phone
All activities in the mobile phone are output via the Bluetooth® antenna to the head unit.
- Upper control panel control unit
The upper control panel control unit transmits the operation signals via the LCP-LIN, Audio/COMAND control panel and telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Audio/COMAND control panel
The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the control signals via telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Touchpad
The touchpad sends the operation signals over the telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Head unit multifunction steering wheel button group
The accept and end phone call switch in the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group can be used to make and terminate a call. The operation signals of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group are read in by the steering wheel electronics. The steering wheel electronics sends these over the steering wheel CAN, steering column tube module control unit, suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the head unit.
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
The VCS is activated via the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group. When a call is being established or a call is being accepted, the VCS is automatically switched off. The operation signals of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group are read in by the steering wheel electronics. The steering wheel electronics sends these over the steering wheel CAN, steering column tube module control unit, suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the head unit.
The voice commands are detected by the driver hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the head unit via a direct line. If necessary, the head unit sends the control signals over the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone.
The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".
Call waiting: Call waiting is a performance feature in which the subscriber can switch between two active connections.
Conference connection: Conference connection is a performance feature in which - depending on the type of connection - several subscribers can be interconnected.
Using the phone in hands-free mode
The voice input in the hands-free mode is recorded by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the head unit. The head unit and the mobile phone communicate with each other via the Bluetooth® antenna. Incoming voice signals are output via the speaker system.
The head unit directly actuates the speaker system or sends corresponding signals over the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code EU8 (Burmester 3DSound system)).
The volume of the voice outputs can, e.g. be adjusted using the volume control button on the lower control panel at the right or the volume control switch on the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group.
Address book
The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). The address book contains the address entries stored in the head unit. Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book. Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries.
Address data of external devices (e.g. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), Notebook) or storage media (e.g. Secure Digital (SD) card, Universal Serial Bus (USB) memory) can be saved in the address book and are then permanently available as an address entry.
Address data can be transferred to the address book via the following system components:
- Bluetooth® interface in mobile phone and Bluetooth® antenna
- SD card slot on multimedia connection unit
- USB connector 1 or USB connector 2 in the multimedia connection unit
Address book entries can include the following information:
- Last name, first name and company
- Yomigana field (for phonetic entry of the name in "Katakana" syllabary) (with code ZJ1 (Version for Japan))
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (several telephone numbers can be saved under one address entry with different symbols)
- Geo position

The call can be established via the VCS [SBS] for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field".
SMS/email (except code ZJ1 (Version for Japan))
The SMS and email application enables the user to receive, send or manage SMS messages and emails. To do so, the SMS messages and emails previously received on the mobile phone as well as any new incoming SMS messages and emails are forwarded to the head unit. The following SMS and email functions are available:
- Receive
- Read on display of mobile phone and on audio/COMAND display
- Read out (English or German)
- Write and send
- Delete
- Mail inbox list of the 30 most recent SMS messages and emails, sorted by date (each SMS message and email is preceded either by the sender or the start of the text, as desired)
The basic telephony SMS and email function requires support of the Message Access Profile (MAP). Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages or emails in the mobile phone.
Once the head unit is connected with the mobile phone, it receives the SMS messages already saved in the mobile phone and any new incoming SMS messages and emails over the Bluetooth® antenna. The functions for writing, sending and managing SMS messages or emails are called up through the basic telephone function. The head unit shows them on the Audio/COMAND display over the HSVL line. When reading SMS messages and emails, the head unit directly actuates the speaker system or sends corresponding signals over the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code EU8 (Burmester 3DSound system)).
Telephony (with code EG1 (Car telephony) or code EH6 (Contactless charging system for mobile phones))
The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by a wake-up pulse when the head unit is switched on. The cellular telephone signals are transmitted and received over the telephone antennas.
Vehicles with code EG1 (Car telephony)
The connection is made using the telephone antenna splitter, telephone antenna changeover switch and the telephone control unit.
Vehicles with code EH6 (Contactless charging system for mobile phones)
The connection is made using the telephone antenna splitter, telephone antenna changeover switch, the cellular telephone system antenna amplifier/compensator, and the mobile phone cradle control unit. For communication using the antenna connection, the mobile pone must be placed into the mobile phone cradle control unit.
If the equipment with code EG1 (Car telephony) and code EH6 (Contactless charging system for mobile phones) is combined, the following connection priorities apply:
- Priority 1: A SIM card is inserted into the telephone control unit or the telephone control unit is connected with a mobile phone via SIM Access Profile.
- Priority 2: A mobile phone is placed on the mobile phone cradle control unit and is logged in via Near Field Communication.
- Priority 3: A mobile phone is in the Bluetooth® signal range.
The mobile phone system supports the Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile radio standard.
Vehicles with code EG1 (Car telephony)
The head unit sends the telephone signals over the Bluetooth® antenna and the Internet signals over the wi-fi antenna to the telephone control unit. The telephone control unit sends the encrypted data over the telephone antenna changeover switch, telephone antenna splitter and the telephone antennas to the mobile phone network.
Vehicles with code EH6 (Contactless charging system for mobile phones)
The mobile phone cradle control unit fulfills the following functions:
- Connection of mobile phone to telephone antennas
- Inductive power supply of the mobile phone, provided it supports the Qi standard
- Forwarding of wake-up signal from the head unit
- Fast log-in option for mobile phone through the Near Field Communication antenna and the NFC interface of the mobile phone cradle control unit
Communication with the head unit is realized through the mobile phone's Bluetooth® interface.
To ensure smooth communication of the mobile phone with the mobile phone cradle control unit, the cellular telephone system signals are sent through capacitive coupling.
PIN prompt
Once the mobile phone has been switched on, a PIN prompt is output where this is set in the mobile phone. This process is displayed in the Audio/COMAND display. The PIN can be entered using the head unit controls.
Near Field Communication (NFC) (with code EH6 (Contactless charging system for mobile phones))
NFC is an international transmission standard for the wireless exchange of data via radio over very short distances (a few centimeters). Authorized mobile phones that are placed on the mobile phone cradle control unit and which support the NFC standard can be connected to the mobile phone system quickly and easily using NFC. The mobile phone and the head unit then communicate via the Near Field Communication antenna, the mobile phone cradle control unit and the telematics CAN.
Connection priority (with code EH6 (Contactless charging system for mobile phones))
The head unit can integrate authorized mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy via NFC or through Bluetooth®, provided it is activated for the mobile phone. NFC uses the NFC interfaces of the mobile phone and the mobile phone cradle control unit as well as the Near Field Communication antenna on the mobile phone cradle control unit. Bluetooth® communication uses the Bluetooth® interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth® antenna.
The head unit differentiates between the following connection priorities:
- The mobile phone is located on the mobile phone cradle control unit and logged in through the NFC.
- The mobile phone is in the Bluetooth® signal range.
The head unit automatically searches over the Bluetooth® connection for the last two connected mobile phones, and then connects to the mobile phone that responds first.

Charging process (with code EH6 (Contactless charging system for mobile phones))
The following options are available for charging the mobile phone:
- Inductive: If the mobile phone supports the Qi standard for the wireless charging process, it can be placed on the contact surface of the mobile phone cradle control unit and is charged inductively.
- With a charging cable: If the mobile phone does not support the Qi standard for the wireless charging process, a charging cable can be connected to the USB port. The mobile phone is charged the conventional way.
