Automatic interior lights control in general
The automatic interior lights control implements the actuation of all components of the interior illumination, the warning and exit illumination as well as the load compartment illumination. The appropriate requests are generated automatically. The master control unit for the automatic interior lights control is the SAM control unit.
The automatic interior lights control function encompasses the following subfunctions:
- Locator lighting
- Orientation lighting
- Warning and exit illumination
- Interior illumination for anti-theft alarm system (ATA) alarm (with code FZ5 (Anti-theft alarm system) or code FZ8 (Alarm system))
- Interior illumination after accident with airbag deployment
Additional function requirement for locator lighting
- Automatic interior lights switched on via interior lamp automatic door system switch
The overhead control panel control unit directly reads in the status of the interior lamp automatic door system switch and sends this via the roof LIN to the SAM control unit.
Locator lighting
The locator lighting is activated when the vehicle is unlocked via the central locking (CL).
The SAM control unit evaluates the following signals to control the locator lighting:
- Status of central locking and circuit 15, sent by the electronic ignition lock control unit via interior CAN
- Interior lamp automatic door system switch status
The SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the locator lighting via the roof LIN to the overhead control panel control unit.
The overhead control panel control unit actuates the following interior illumination components:
- Dome lamp (model 463.20)
- Rear interior lamp in rear dome lamp (model 463.23/24/27/34)
- Left front interior lamp (dimmed)
- Right front interior lamp (dimmed)
The SAM control unit actuates the following components of the load compartment illumination:
- Left load compartment lamp
- Right load compartment lamp
All lamps are switched off after expiration of 40 s or immediately if the vehicle is locked again within 3 s after unlocking it.
If the ambient illumination function has been activated via the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the vehicle is unlocked. This causes the "Standing lights actuation active" signal to be set, which also activates the search and symbol illumination.
The rear SAM control unit also actuates the following components in a dimmed state:
- Left front footwell lamp
- Right front footwell lamp
- Left rear footwell lamp
- Right rear footwell lamp
Additional function requirements for orientation lighting
- Automatic interior lights switched on via interior lamp automatic door system switch
- Vehicle doors closed
The overhead control panel control unit directly reads in the status of the interior lamp automatic door system switch and sends this via the roof LIN to the SAM control unit.
The front door control units send the status of the front doors (open or closed) to the front SAM control unit over the interior CAN.
The rear door control units (model 463.23/24/27/34) send the status of the rear doors (open or closed) via the interior CAN to the SAM control unit.
Orientation lighting
The orientation lighting is activated when circuit 15C is switched off.
The SAM control unit evaluates the following signals to control the orientation lighting:
- Status of circuit 15, sent by the electronic ignition lock control unit over the interior CAN
- Interior lamp automatic door system switch status
- Status of vehicle doors sent by front and rear door control units (model 463.23/24/27/34) via interior CAN
The SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the orientation lighting via the roof LIN to the overhead control panel control unit.
The overhead control panel control unit actuates the following interior illumination components:
- Dome lamp (model 463.20)
- Rear interior lamp in rear dome lamp (model 463.23/24/27/34)
- Left front interior lamp (dimmed)
- Right front interior lamp (dimmed)
The SAM control unit actuates the following components of the load compartment illumination:
- Left load compartment lamp
- Right load compartment lamp
The rear SAM control unit also actuates the following components in a dimmed state:
- Left front footwell lamp
- Right front footwell lamp
- Left rear footwell lamp
- Right rear footwell lamp
When the vehicle doors are closed, all lights are switched off after 20 s. The OFF delay time can be switched on or off via the "Settings" menu in the instrument cluster. The respective selection is sent by the instrument cluster via the interior CAN to the SAM control unit.
Additional function requirements for warning and exit illumination
- Interior lamp automatic door system switch not in "Off" position
The overhead control panel control unit directly reads in the status of the interior lamp automatic door system switch and sends this via the roof LIN to the SAM control unit.
Warning and exit illumination
The warning and exit illumination is activated by opening a vehicle door.
The SAM control unit evaluates the following signals to control the warning and exit illumination:
- Status of left front door sent by left front door control unit via interior CAN
- Status of right front door sent by right front door control unit via interior CAN
- Status of left rear door sent by left rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34) via interior CAN
- Status of right rear door sent by right rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34) via interior CAN
- Interior lamp automatic door system switch status
The SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the warning and exit illumination to the following control units via interior CAN:
- Rear control unit
- Left front door control unit
- Right front door control unit
- Left rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34)
- Right rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34)
The following components of the warning and exit illumination are actuated if the corresponding door is opened:
- Left front door exit and warning lamp by the left front door control unit
- Right front door exit and warning lamp by the right front door control unit
- Left rear door exit and warning lamp from left rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34)
- Right rear door exit and warning lamp from right rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34)
The SAM control unit actuates the following components relative to the status of the front doors:

When a door is opened, the SAM control unit activates the orientation lighting, whereby the footwell lamps are actuated in an undimmed state.
When all doors are closed again and the electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 15 ON status via the interior CAN, all lights are switched off. The footwell lamps are then actuated in a dimmed state again.
To preserve the on-board electrical system battery (G1), all the lights that are switched on are switched off after 5 min. with circuit 15 OFF and an open door. After the last door is closed, all switched-on lights are switched off after 8 s.
Interior illumination for ATA alarm (with code FZ5 (Anti-theft alarm system) or code FZ8 (Alarm system))
The interior illumination is activated immediately after an ATA [EDW] alarm has been triggered.
The ATA/tow-away protection/interior protection control unit sends the status of the ATA over the interior CAN to the SAM control unit. The SAM control unit evaluates this and sends the request to switch on the interior illumination via the roof LIN to the overhead control panel control unit.
The overhead control panel control unit then actuates the following interior illumination components:
- Dome lamp (model 463.20)
