Function requirements for further telematics services, general
- Circuit 30
- Transport mode not active
- The emergency call system control unit (N123/4) communication module authorized for the relevant vehicle-related service is configured ex-factory with the telephone number of the relevant service provider
- The vehicle owner is registered and authorized at the Service Center
- Each vehicle-related service is authorized separately
- A higher-priority vehicle-related service is not active (except when transmitting map data as part of another service)
Additional telematics services in general
The telematics services of the emergency call system are realized via a mobile radio connection to the Service Center. The communication module integrated in the emergency call system control unit transmits and receives the mobile phone signals via the multifunction antenna (A28/11). In the event of poor reception or a multifunction antenna failure (e. g., defect because of rollover) the emergency call system control unit automatically uses the emergency call system antenna (A2/52) to transmit the mobile phone signals.
The function of the following emergency call system telematics services is described in this document:
- Tracking and notification in the event of anti-theft warning
- Roadside assistance

- Vehicle remote unlocking
- Vehicle remote locking
- Remote diagnosis ("Remote Diagnosis")
- Transmission of vehicle position ("Vehicle Locator")
- Notification of a certain speed being exceeded ("Speed Alert")
- Notification if a certain area has been reached or left ("Geo Fencing")
- Transmitting information (e. g., map data) to the vehicle ("Remote Information Feed")
- Transmission of updates to vehicle ("Remote Update")
- Visual and acoustic vehicle recognition ("Flash Lights and Sound Horn")
Tracking and notification in the event of anti-theft warning
The following points are vehicle tracking objectives:
- Retrieval of stolen or misappropriated vehicles
- Fast assistance if vehicle stolen or in the event of a holdup
The vehicle tracking function consists of the following subfunctions:
- Anti-theft alarm (with code FZ5 (Anti-theft alarm system))
- Vehicle theft telephone message from vehicle owner to police and then to Service Center
- Vehicle tracking
Additional function requirements for anti-theft alarm (with code FZ5 (Anti-theft alarm system))
- Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) is active for t > 30 s

If the anti-theft alarm system is triggered, the SAM control unit (N10) transmits the "ATA [EDW] alarm" message via the following route:

Emergency call system control unit
The "ATA [EDW] alarm" message is transmitted to the Service Center by the communication module integrated in the emergency call system control unit via the multifunction antenna. The Service Center receives the "ATA [EDW] alarm" message and advises the vehicle owner by telephone that the ATA [EDW] alarm has been triggered. "Vehicle tracking" not yet triggered by the Service Center.
Additional function requirement for vehicle theft notification by phone from vehicle owner to police and then to Service Center

If the vehicle owner has been informed by the Service Center that his/her vehicle has been stolen or if the vehicle owner himself/herself notices that the vehicle has been stolen, it is first necessary for the vehicle owner to report the theft to the police. The vehicle owner receives a special number from the police, which confirms that the vehicle theft has been reported. With this number, the vehicle owner can report to the Service Center, by telephone, and give this number to the employee there. The Service Center checks the request and legitimization (authorization) of the vehicle owner.

Vehicle tracking
After reporting the theft to the Service Center and legitimization (authorization) by the Service Center, an initiation command is transmitted to the vehicle.
The emergency call system control unit receives the initialization command via the multifunction antenna.
The emergency call system control unit then activates the GPS position finding (global navigation system) and, if necessary, the voice connection to the vehicle. The emergency call system control unit then sends the position data to the service provider via the same route as the "ATA [EDW] alarm" message.
The position data is transmitted cyclically and for the following events:
- Exceeding a certain distance
- Circuit 15 ON or circuit 15 OFF (switching the ignition on or off)
The Service Center forwards the location of the vehicle to the responsible command staff (e.g. police). The command staff can then decide whether or not to speak to the driver.
Vehicle tracking can only be deactivated by the Service Center.
Additional function requirements for breakdown assistance
- Triggering of breakdown assistance by pressing the breakdown assistance button (S93/3s4)
Roadside assistance
With the breakdown assistance function it is possible for the customer to contact the Service Center e.g. in the event of a defect on the vehicle. The Service Center can now take further vehicle-specific data into consideration to initiate effective assistance measures.
After reading in the breakdown assistance button, the emergency call system control unit sets up a voice connection to the Service Center. The signal of the breakdown assistance button is transmitted via the following route:

Emergency call system control unit
After the Service Center replies with a special tone, the emergency call system control unit automatically sends an SMS message containing the following data to the Service Center via the integrated communications module:
- Vehicle position
- Customer and vehicle identification data
- Vehicle data from diagnostic CAN ("Initial Summary")
The Service Center can perform a remote diagnosis if necessary.
The communication module integrated in the emergency call system control unit transmits and receives the mobile radio signals from the multifunction antenna via a direct line.
In the event of breakdown assistance, other vehicle-related services with lower priority (for example, MB-Info call) are interrupted.
The light emitting diode integrated into the breakdown assistance button flashes as long as the breakdown assistance is active. This is also shown in the instrument cluster (A1) and on the audio/COMAND display (A40/8).
In the event of a breakdown assistance instance, the Service Center can transmit map data to the vehicle if necessary.

- Triggering of an MB-Info call by pressing the MB-Info button (S93/3s5)
MB Info
The MB-Info call function enables the driver to call up information on Mercedes-Benz brand products as well as further voice-based services (for example, hotel booking) at any time.
This vehicle-related service is primarily an oral information service that is provided via the communications module integrated into the emergency call system control unit.
In the event of an MB-Info call, the Service Center can transmit map data to the vehicle if necessary.
The signal of the MB-Info button is transmitted via the following route:

Emergency call system control unit
The emergency call system control unit then establishes a voice connection to the Service Center via the multifunction antenna. After the Service Center sends feedback in the form of a special tone, the emergency call system control unit automatically sends an SMS with the following data to the Service Center via the multifunction antenna:
- Vehicle position
- Customer and vehicle identification data
- Vehicle data from diagnostic CAN ("Initial Summary")
The MB-Info button's integrated light emitting diode flashes as long as the MB-Info call is activated. This is also indicated in the instrument cluster and on the audio/COMAND display.
In the event of an MB-Info call, other vehicle-related services with lower priority (for example, remote door unlocking) are interrupted.
Additional function requirements for remote door unlocking
- Query for remote door unlocking with legitimation from the Service Center or by means of an appropriate application program for mobile devices
Vehicle remote unlocking
The driver can have the vehicle unlocked remotely by the Service Center using the vehicle remote door unlocking function, for example, if the transmitter key (A8/1) has been left inside the vehicle and a second transmitter key is not available.
The Service Center requests an SMS message with the required data from the vehicle. The emergency call system control unit then automatically transmits an SMS containing the following data to the Service Center via the multifunction antenna:
- Vehicle position
- Customer identification data
- Vehicle identification data
The Service Center receives the mobile radio signals and compares the transmitted data with the query and the legitimization (authorization) of the driver. If the data matches, the Service Center issues a "vehicle remote door unlock request" to the vehicle. The communication module integrated in the emergency call system control unit receives the "remote door unlock request" and the mobile radio signals from the multifunction antenna via a direct line.
Upon receipt of the "vehicle remote door unlock request" the emergency call system control unit transmits the request to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the diagnostic CAN. The electronic ignition lock control unit then initiates the unlocking of all vehicle doors and the unlocking of the rear-end door.
The execution of the vehicle remote door unlock is displayed by a message in the instrument cluster. The red light-emitting diodes in the emergency call system button also flash (S93/3s2).
If the "Remote door unlocking request" is denied by the Service Center because there is no legitimization, for example, the remote door unlocking function is blocked for 15 min.

- Query for remote door locking with legitimation at the Service Center or by means of an appropriate application program for mobile devices with legitimization (authorization) at the service center
Vehicle remote locking
The vehicle remote door locking function enables the driver to lock his/her vehicle remotely through a Service Center if he/she has forgotten to lock the vehicle.
The Service Center checks the request and legitimization (authorization) of the driver. If the data matches, the Service Center issues a "vehicle remote door lock request" to the vehicle.
The "vehicle remote door lock request" is received by the communication module of the emergency call system control unit via the multifunction antenna.
Upon receipt of the "vehicle remote door lock request" the emergency call system control unit transmits the request to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the diagnostic CAN. The electronic ignition lock control unit checks whether locking all vehicle doors and rear-end door is possible. If all vehicle doors and the rear-end door can be locked, the electronic ignition lock control unit initiates the locking process.
Remote diagnosis ("Remote Diagnosis")
With the remote diagnosis, diagnostic data is transmitted by the emergency call system control unit to the Service Center via the multifunction antenna.
The transmission of diagnostic data takes place automatically (via scripts, for evaluation) and also manually as part of breakdown assistance.
The manual remote diagnosis is triggered by the Service Center as part of breakdown assistance. A pop-up window appears on the Audio/COMAND display asking the vehicle user to confirm initiation of the remote diagnosis.
As soon as the vehicle user confirms the request, the voice connection to the Service Center is interrupted and the transmission of the diagnostic data starts. As soon as the diagnostic data has been transmitted, the Service Center restores the voice connection to the vehicle.
As well as the diagnostic data, the emergency call system control unit also transmits status information ("TRANSMISSION_SUCCESS" and "TRANSMISSION_FAILURE").
The emergency call system control unit receives the diagnostic data via the diagnostic CAN from the electronic ignition lock control unit as a central interface.
Transmission of vehicle position ("Vehicle Locator")
This service makes it possible for the user to determine the vehicle's current location by calling or transmitting an Internet inquiry to the Service Center. The user receives the vehicle location either in the form of a map display (web page or iPhone), an SMS or by e-mail from the Service Center.
The transmission of the vehicle position is not indicated in the vehicle or made noticeable in any other way.
The emergency call system control unit receives the request from the Service Center and then transmits the following data back to the Service Center:
- Time
- Position information (longitude and latitude)
- Type of position finding (GPS or basic position finding)
With circuit 15 OFF (ignition OFF) the emergency call system control unit transmits the last position that was determined.
The GPS data is received as follows:
- Left front GPS antenna →
- Global positioning system antenna splitter (A2/5) →
- Emergency call system control unit
The Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) transmits the wheel speed and yaw rate signals for basic position finding via the following route:

By making a call or transmitting an Internet inquiry to the Service Center, the user can define a speed for the vehicle which, when exceeded, will cause the user to be notified by SMS or e-mail from the Service Center.
As soon as the Service Center has activated the service, the emergency call system control unit reads in the speed value from the diagnostic CAN at intervals of no more than 5 s seconds with circuit 15 ON.
If the defined value is exceeded, the emergency call system control unit transmits a message containing the current position data to the Service Center, which notifies the user.
The emergency call system control unit only transmits one message within a certain time frame. The time frame is defined by the Service Center.
The speed value can be freely selected anywhere in the range between 0 to 255 km/h, meaning that the user can ask for notification as soon as the stationary vehicle is driven away.
The transmission of data is not indicated in the vehicle or made noticeable in any other way.
Notification if a certain area has been reached or left ("Geo Fencing")
By making a call or transmitting an Internet inquiry to the Service Center, the user can define areas where the user will be notified by SMS, e-mail or an automatic telephone call when they are entered or left.
The areas can be circular or defined as polygons with at least 3 and a maximum of 10 corner points. When polygonal areas are being defined, the corner points must be specified in clockwise order. If overlaps occur when the corner points are being connected, the emergency call system control unit transmits a fault message to the Service Center.
Up to 20 circular or polygonal areas can be defined and stored.
The standard error tolerance for position finding is 100 m. Whenever the ignition is switched on, the standard error tolerance is set again. For this service, the emergency call system control unit evaluates the GPS data 2 times per minute. As soon as an area limit is reached, the position of the vehicle is determined at shorter time intervals.
The transmission of data is not indicated in the vehicle or made noticeable in any other way.
Sending information (for example, map data) to the vehicle ("Remote Information Feed")
The user can transfer suitable information to the vehicle via the Internet (for example, Google Maps, Yahoo) or the Service Center with this service. The data is used in the vehicle by the COMAND controller unit.
All information, including that which is transmitted via the Internet, is transferred to the emergency call system control unit via the multifunction antenna by the Service Center. If circuit 15 is OFF, the emergency call system control unit stores the data in a buffer. If circuit 15 is ON, the emergency call system control unit forwards the received data to the COMAND controller unit as soon as it is switched on.
Information of the following kind can be received by the emergency call system control unit, buffered and forwarded:
- Points of Interest (buffer: for a maximum of 100 Points of Interest)
- Routes (buffer: maximum of 30 routes, each with up to 255 route points)
- Free text (buffer: maximum 10 data records)
The emergency call system control unit forwards the received information as follows:
- Diagnostic CAN →

- COMAND control unit
The reception of information is displayed by the COMAND controller unit by means of a pop-up window on the audio/COMAND display.
Map data can be sent by the Service Center as part of an emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB-Info call.

Transmission of updates to vehicle ("Remote Update")
The software of the emergency call system control unit is updated using this service, without the user having to visit a workshop.
If the Service Center sends a software update request to the emergency call system control unit, the emergency call system control unit downloads the relevant software over the multifunction antenna as soon as the prerequisites for this have been met. The emergency call system control unit transmits notification back to the Service Center that the software update has been successfully carried out.
The software is not updated immediately after transmission, but only 15 min. after circuit 15 OFF.
Visual and acoustic vehicle recognition ("Flash Lights and Sound Horn")
The visual and acoustic vehicle recognition makes it easier to find your own vehicle if it is outside the range of the transmitter key. The user activates and deactivates the service by making a call to the Service Center. The Service Center transmits an appropriate message to the emergency call system control unit. The emergency call system control unit then activates or deactivates the panic alarm by transmitting an appropriate command to the SAM control unit.
