Remove/Install Front Axle Shafts - AR33.30-P-0620LW

Model 205, 253 with transmission 725.0 

With Code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive) 

Model 213, 238 with transmission 725.0

CAUTION Risk of injury  caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.
Deburr repair panels.

REMOVING Remove     
1 Remove left or right front wheel-and-tire assembly   AR40.10-P-1102A
2 Remove center bolt IMPORTANT The aid of a helper is required to remove the center bolt.  
3 Detach steering knuckle from upper transverse control arm    
4 Remove drive shaft from steering knuckle    
5 Fix steering knuckle on upper transverse control arm with a cable tie    
6 Pull front axle shafts (1) out of front axle transmission and intermediate shaft (4) using impact extractor (02) and pulling device (03) NOTES
If the left front axle shaft (1) is seized, the retaining ring (2) on the intermediate shaft (4) must be removed and then the left front axle shaft (1) can be pulled out with the intermediate shaft (4).
Otherwise the oil pan may be damaged.
NOTES
Absolute cleanliness is essential when working on the front axle transmission.
Otherwise operation of the front axle transmission will be impaired.

7.1 Remove retaining ring from front axle shaft (1) When removing right front axle shaft (1).  
7.2 Remove retaining ring (1s) from intermediate shaft (4) When removing left front axle shaft (1).  
8 Remove radial shaft sealing ring When removing right front axle shaft (1). AR33.30-P-0540LWX 
INSTALLING Install     
9 Install new radial shaft sealing ring When installing right front axle shaft (1). AR33.30-P-0540LWX 
10.1 Install new retaining ring (1s) of intermediate shaft (4) When installing left front axle shaft (1).
IMPORTANT Apply light coating of microgrease to retaining ring (1s).

10.2 Install new retaining ring of front axle shaft (1) When installing right front axle shaft (1).
IMPORTANT Apply light coating of microgrease to retaining ring.

11 Check dust boots of front axle shafts (1) If damaged.

Replace dust boots.

12 Press front axle shafts (1) into front axle transmission and intermediate shaft (4) IMPORTANT Before installing the left front axle shaft (1), apply a light coating of grease to the toothing of the intermediate shaft (4).
IMPORTANT Before fully pressing in the right front axle shaft (1), pull off the SPECIAL TOOL assembly tool from the radial shaft sealing ring.

13 Release cable tie and insert front axle shafts (1) into steering knuckle    
14 Attach steering knuckle to upper transverse control arm TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, steering knuckle to transverse control arm *BA33.20-P-1006-01U 
15 Attach center bolt IMPORTANT The aid of a helper is required to attach the center bolt.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, front axle shaft to wheel hub

16 Attach front left and front right complete wheel   AR40.10-P-1102A
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
17 Perform engine test run and check front axle transmission for leaktightness and function
