Remove/Install Boots On Front Axle Shaft - AR33.30-P-0690CW

Model 203, 204, 205, 206, 207, 211, 212, 213, 216, 217, 218, 220, 221, 222, 238, 253, 290

CAUTION Risk of injury  caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.
Deburr repair panels.		 AS00.00-Z-0017-01A
REMOVING Remove     
1 Remove front axle shaft (1). Model 206 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all- wheel drive) Inside boot AR33.30-P-0620WT
    Model 205 with transmission 722.96/97 Inside boot AR33.30-P-0620LWY
    Model 217 with transmission 722.96/97
Inside boot Model 217 with transmission 725.0 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all- wheel drive)
Inside boot Model 222 with transmission 722.96/97 except code Z07 (B7 armoring on special protection version)

2 Clamp front axle shaft (1) in vise. IMPORTANT Use soft vise jaws.  
3 Remove clamp (2).    
4.1 Remove clamp (4b). Model 204, 205, 206, 207, 212, 213, 216, 217, 218, 220, 221, 222, 238, 253, 290 Inside boot  
4.2 Saw into sealing boot cap (3b) on crimped par of joint hub (8), pull on or roll up crimped part and remove sealing boot cap (3b). Model 203, 211 Inside boot
NOTES
Do not damage the joint hub (8) when sawing.
If this is not observed, remove joint hub (8).
IMPORTANT Dismantling as with rear axle.		 AR35.30-P-0661-01P
5.1 Cut open and remove sealing boot (4a). Model 204, 205, 206, 207, 212, 213, 216, 217, 218, 220, 221, 222, 238, 253, 290 Inside boot  
5.2 Cut open and remove sealing boot (3a) with sealing boot cap (3b). Model 203, 211 Inside boot  
6 Remove joint hub (8) from front axle shaft (1). IMPORTANT When doing so, the front axle shaft (1) must be vertical.  
7 Mark bearings (6) relative to constant velocity joint hub (5).    
8 Remove bearings (6) from constant velocity joint hub (5). IMPORTANT Handle bearings (6) carefully and do not mix up with each other.  
9 Remove retaining ring (7).    
10 Remove constant velocity joint hub (5) from front axle shaft (1) using a suitable puller.    
11 Check bearings (6) and joint hub (8). If damage or wear is present:
↓
Replace complete front axle shaft (1).		  
12 Carefully clean all parts. IMPORTANT Do not remove the markings.
Assembly cleaner		 *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
INSTALLING Install     
13 Slide clamp (2) onto front axle shaft (1).    
14.1 Slide sealing boot (4a) with clamp (4b) onto front axle shaft (1). Model 204, 205, 206, 207, 212, 213, 216, 217, 218, 220, 221, 222, 238, 253, 290 Inside boot  
14.2 Slide sealing boot (3a) with sealing boot cap (3b) onto front axle shaft (1). Model 203, 211 Inside boot
IMPORTANT Do not separate sealing boot (3a) and sealing boot cap (3b).		  
15 Attach constant velocity joint hub (5) to front axle shaft (1). IMPORTANT Use a suitable plastic mallet and sleeve.  
16 Attach retaining ring (7). IMPORTANT Replace the retaining ring (7).  
17 Grease bearings (6). IMPORTANT Only use grease from the repair kit.

18 Slide bearings (6) onto constant velocity joint hub (5). IMPORTANT When doing so, the front axle shaft (1) must be vertical. Observe assignment of bearings (6) relative to constant velocity joint hub (5).  
19 Replace sealing ring (3c) of joint hub (8). Model 203, 211 Inside boot
NOTES
Do not apply grease or oil to the sealing ring (3c).
Otherwise the seal boot cap (3b) may turn on the joint hub (8).		  
20 Fill joint hub (8) half-full with grease. IMPORTANT Only use grease from the repair kit.

21 Slide joint hub (8) onto front axle shaft (1). IMPORTANT Observe the installation position of the joint hub (8) relative to the front axle shaft (1).  
22 Fill joint hub (8) with remaining grease. IMPORTANT Only use quantity of grease from repair kit.

23.1 Slide sealing boot (4a) with clamp (4b) onto joint hub (8). Model 204, 205, 206, 207, 212, 213, 216, 217, 218, 220, 221, 222, 238, 253, 290lnside boot
IMPORTANT Position raised bead of seal boot (4a) in radial groove of joint hub (8).		  
23.2 Slide sealing boot (3a) with sealing boot cap (3b) onto joint hub (8). Model 203, 211 Inside boot
IMPORTANT Pay attention to the sealing ring (3c) during assembly. Slide the seal boot cap (3b) onto the joint hub (8) as far as the end stop. Check the position of the sealing ring (3c) in the groove of the joint hub (8) (visual inspection in the gap between the seal boot cap (3b) and joint hub (8)).		  
24.1 Attach sealing boot (4a) with clamp (4b) to
joint hub (8).		 Model 204, 205, 206, 207, 212, 213, 216, 217, 218, 220, 221, 222, 238, 253, 290lnside boot

24.2 Fix sealing boot cap (3b) in place on joint hub (8). Model 203, 211 Inside boot
IMPORTANT Assembly as for rear axle shaft. Crimp the seal boot cap (3b) into the groove of the joint hub (8). The seal boot cap (3b) must not be able to be turned any more.
IMPORTANT The ball joint is sealed by the sealing ring (3c).		 AR35.30-P-0661-01P
25 Align sealing boot (3a) or sealing boot (4a) to front axle shaft (1) and position in radial groove of front axle shaft (1).    
26 Lift sealing boot (3a) or sealing boot (4a) on front axle shaft (1) using a suitable tool. NOTES
Do not damage raised bead on sealing boot (3a) or sealing boot (4a) and radial groove on front axle shaft (1).
Otherwise leakage will occur.
IMPORTANT Raising the sealing boot (3a) or sealing boot (4a) induces pressure compensation.		  
27 Attach clamp (2). SPECIAL TOOL Pliers for click clamps Fig 1
28 Remove front axle shaft (1) from vise.    
29 Install front axle shaft (1). Model 206 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive) Inside boot
