Remove/Check/Install Front Axle Brake Pads - AR42.10-P-1610LWO

Model 238 

1-piston floating caliper brake

DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A 
WARNING Risk of injury.  Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
CAUTION Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A

REMOVING Remove     
1 Remove cover above brake fluid expansion reservoir    
2 Clean area around cap on expansion reservoir for brake fluid Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
3 Unscrew the cap on the brake fluid expansion reservoir and suction off some brake fluid IMPORTANT This prevents the expansion reservoir overflowing when the brake piston is pushed back (7).  
4 Remove front wheels   AR40.10-P-1102A
5 Detach electrical line of front right brake wear sensor (S10/2) from bracket (1) IMPORTANT Pay attention to the routing of the electrical line of the right front brakepad wear sensor (S10/2).  
6 Detach front right brake wear sensor (S10/2) from electrical connection    
7 Unscrew bolt (2)    
8 Release outer brake lining (6) from brake caliper (4) IMPORTANT The outer brakepad (6) is bonded and if the bonding is detached, the brakepads (6) must be replaced.  
9 Fold back brake caliper (4) NOTES
Do not subject the brake hose and electrical line to tension and do not kink them.
The brake hose and the electrical line can otherwise be damaged.
 
10 Remove brakepads (6)    
11 Pull right front brake wear sensor (S10/2) from pad backing plate of brake lining (6) IMPORTANT Pay attention to the installation location of the right front brakepad wear sensor (S10/2).  
INSPECT Check     
12 Check brake disk for wear and condition    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   IMPORTANT Replace brake disks as a complete set only.
In event of damage or excessive wear

Replace brake disks.

13 Check brake caliper (4) with detachable parts for damage If a problem arises

Replace corresponding components.

14 Check brake caliper support (5) for damage If a problem arises

Replace brake caliper support (5).

15 Push back brake piston (7) using pusher tool (01) SPECIAL TOOL Resetting device
If the brake piston (7) is sluggish

Replace brake caliper (4).

CLEAN Clean     
16 Clean contact surfaces of brake linings (6) on brake caliper (4) and on brake caliper support (5) NOTES
Do not use sharp-edged or pointed objects.
Otherwise, the dust boot, brake caliper (4) or the brake caliper support (5) may be damaged.
IMPORTANT Adhesive residue must be completely removed from the contact surfaces of the brake caliper (4).
Assembly cleaner

INSTALLING Install     
17 Connect right front brakepad wear sensor (S10/2) to backing plate of brakepad (6)    
18 Apply brake paste to brake caliper support (5)   AR42.10-P-0163-01LW 
    Brake paste, Varybond *BR00.45-Z-1072-06A 
19 Remove protective foils from bonding surfaces of brakepads (6)    
20 Insert brakepads (6) IMPORTANT No brake paste or lubricants must be applied to the brakepads (6).
IMPORTANT Only sets of brake pads (6) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
 
21 Insert brake caliper (4) IMPORTANT No brake paste or lubricants must be applied to the brake calipers (4).  
22 Tighten screw (2) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Guide pin to brake caliper support or bolt for guide pin to brake caliper *BA42.10-P-1004-10X 
23 Connect right front brakepad wear sensor (S10/2) to electrical connector    
24 Fasten electrical line of right front brakepad wear sensor (S10/2) on bracket (1)    
25 Install front wheels   AR40.10-P-1102A
26 Operate brake pedal several times until brakepads (6) contact brake disks    
INSPECT Check     
27 Check and correct brake fluid level in expansion reservoir    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4210B
28 Carry out brake test on the test stand    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.00-P-4290BA
