Function requirements for video operation in general
- Circuit 30t ON status
- Transport mode not active
- No Smartphone connected through Android Auto or CarPlay to the multimedia connection unit or to the front center console USB port
Video mode, general
The head unit supports the playback of videos on mobile data media and devices (e.g. a USB flash drive, smartphone) as well as videos (HTML5) from the Internet. The head unit also prepares compressed video data for displaying on the Audio/COMAND display.
Internet usage is described elsewhere.
The mobile data media and devices can be connected via the following components:
- Front center console USB port (with code 897 (Wireless mobile phone charging) or with code 899 (Multifunction telephony))
- USB connector 1 of multimedia connection unit
- USB connector 2 of multimedia connection unit
The video function can be operated using the:
- Upper control panel control unit (with code 246 (Analog clock))
- Right lower control panel (automatic transmission) or left lower control panel (manual transmission)
- Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only))
- Touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only) or with code 448 (Touchpad))
- Instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group and head unit multifunction steering wheel button group
Function sequence for video mode
The menu for the media source can be called up via the upper control panel control unit (with code 246 (analog clock)).
The control signals are sent via the following route:
LCP LIN →
Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) or Touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only)) →
Telematics CAN →
Head unit
The media source can be activated with the Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) or with the touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only) or with code 448 (Touchpad)). The Audio/COMAND control panel and the touchpad transmit the control signals via the telematics CAN to the head unit.
The video functions can be operated using the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group. The control signals of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group are forwarded via the following route:
Steering wheel electronics →
Steering wheel CAN (as of 01.06.2018) or steering LIN (up to 31.05.2018) →
Steering column tube module control unit →
Chassis FlexRay →
Electronic ignition lock control unit →
User interface CAN →
Head unit
The head unit receives the video signals over a USB (Universal Serial Bus) connection from the multimedia connection unit or from the front center console USB port (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)). The head unit processes the video signals and transmits them via an HSVL line to the Audio/COMAND display.
Audio is output depending on the equipment variant:
- On vehicles except model 238.361/461 and except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced sound system), the audio is output by the head unit via direct lines to the speaker system.
- On model 238.361/461 except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced sound system), the audio signals are transmitted via MOST to the Midline sound system amplifier control unit, which outputs them via the speaker system.
- In vehicles with code 810 (Sound system), the audio signals are transmitted via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, and are output by this via the loudspeaker system.
- In vehicles with code 811 (Advanced sound system), the audio signals are transmitted via MOST to the Advanced sound system amplifier control unit, and are output by this via the loudspeaker system.
The volume can be adjusted using the volume control button on the right lower control panel (with automatic transmission) or the left lower control panel (with manual transmission). The control signals are sent via the following route:
LCP LIN →
Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) or Touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only)) →
Telematics CAN →
Head unit
The volume can be adjusted via one of the following components on the multifunction steering wheel:
- Volume adjustment switch (as of 01.06.2018) of head unit multifunction steering wheel button group
- Volume control button (up to 31.05.2018) of instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group
The operation signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are transmitted via the following route:
Steering wheel electronics →
Steering wheel CAN (as of 01.06.2018) or steering LIN (up to 31.05.2018) →
Steering column tube module control unit →
Chassis FlexRay →
Electronic ignition lock control unit →
User interface CAN →
