Function requirement TV mode, general

TV mode, general

The TV tuner control unit makes it possible to receive digital TV channels in the vehicle and show them on the Audio/COMAND display. The head unit switches the TV picture off when the vehicle starts to move. When the vehicle is moving, only acoustic playback remains active and - for safety reasons - a warning is shown on the Audio/COMAND display. The head unit receives the speed signal from the instrument cluster via the user interface CAN.

IMPORTANT Operating electrical or electronic devices (e.g. USB chargers) inside the vehicle can significantly impair the reception quality.

If the head unit is not switched on, it can be activated via the "ON" button in the left lower control panel (with manual transmission) or in the right lower control panel (with automatic transmission). The signal is forwarded by the left lower control panel (with manual transmission) or the right lower control panel (with automatic transmission) via the LCP LIN, the Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) or the touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only)) and the telematics CAN to the head unit.

The TV functions can be selected, activated and set with the controls of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group. As of 01.06.2018, the volume can be changed using the volume adjustment switch. Up to 31.05.2018, the volume can be adjusted using the volume control button of the instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group.

The control signals are transmitted as follows:

Steering wheel electronics →

Steering wheel CAN (as of 01.06.2018) or steering LIN (up to 31.05.2018) →

Steering column tube module control unit →

Chassis FlexRay →

Electronic ignition lock control unit →

User interface CAN →

Head unit

The TV functions can be selected, activated and adjusted using the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)). The "Back" button supports navigation in the menus. The operation signals are sent from the Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) over the telematics CAN to the head unit.

The TV functions can be operated with the touchpad. The control signals are transmitted to the head unit by the touchpad via telematics CAN.

The TV functions can be activated on the upper control panel control unit. The volume can be changed on the left lower control panel (with manual transmission) or on the right lower control panel (with automatic transmission) using the volume control button. The control signals are forwarded as follows:

LCP LIN →

Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) or Touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only)) →

Telematics CAN →

Head unit

IMPORTANT The TV media source can also be selected via the instrument cluster.

The TV tuner control unit separates the video and audio signals that are contained in the TV signals. The TV mode is therefore comprised as follows:

Function sequence for reception of TV signals

In model 238.3, the TV-1 signal is received as follows:

Rear window antenna →

TV 1 antenna amplifier →

TV tuner control unit

In model 238.4, the TV-1 signal is received as follows:

Windshield antenna →

TV 1 antenna amplifier →

TV tuner control unit

In model 238.3, the TV-2 signal is received as follows:

Rear window antenna →

FM 2, DAB and TV antenna amplifier →

TV tuner control unit

In model 238.4, the TV-2 signal is received as follows:

Windshield antenna →

FM 2, DAB and TV antenna amplifier →

TV tuner control unit

The TV-3 signal is received over the following path:

Windshield antenna →

TV 3 antenna amplifier →

TV tuner control unit

The TV tuner control unit processes the TV signals and separates the video signals from the audio signals.

Function sequence for output of video signals

The TV tuner control unit transmits the video signals via the following route:

MOST →

Head unit →

HSVL →

Audio/COMAND display

The head unit also transmits control signals via the telematics CAN to the Audio/COMAND display.

Function sequence for output of audio signals

On vehicles except model 238.361/461 and except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System), the TV tuner control unit transmits the audio signals via MOST to the head unit. The head unit amplifies the audio signals and outputs them over the speaker system.

On model 238.361/461 except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System), the TV tuner control unit forwards the audio signals via MOST to the Midline sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the audio signals and outputs them over the speaker system.

In vehicles with code 810 (Sound system), the TV tuner control unit forwards the audio signals via the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the audio signals and outputs them over the speaker system.

In vehicles with code 811 (Advanced sound system), the TV tuner control unit forwards the audio signals via the MOST to the advanced sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the audio signals and outputs them over the speaker system.

Additional information (With Code 498 (Japan version))

The supplemental information is subdivided into the following categories:

TV reception

With digital TV reception the "one-segment" substandard (TV standard for mobile telephony) is also supported in addition to the "full-segment" substandard.

Additional functions

The TV tuner control unit has the following functionalities:

Additional information (Except Code 498 (Japan version))

The supplemental information is subdivided into the following categories:

TV reception

Only digital television according to the Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial (DVB-T, DVB-T2) standard in the range from 470 to 700 MHz is received. In addition to the MPEG-2 video compression standard, MPEG-4 and MPEG-H (H.265) are also supported. Encrypted programs can be received with a CI+ (Common Interface Plus) module.

Additional functions

The TV tuner control unit currently has the following functionalities:

IMPORTANT Video text function: Some stations, primarily in central Europe, offer video text in addition to their television program. To this end, the TV tuner control unit is equipped with a separate video text decoder. Only video text broadcast with Latin ASCII characters are supported, i.e. Greek or Cyrillic characters are not supported.
