Remove/Install Timing Case Cover - AR01.40-P-8000MSA

Engine 256.9 in model 213, 238, 257, 290

CAUTION Risk of injury  to skin and eyes due to handling of engine oil. Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing engine oil Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
Do not fill engine oil into beverage containers.

CAUTION Risk of injury  caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.
Deburr repair panels.

REMOVING Remove     
1 Remove integrated starter alternator (A79).   AR15.40-P-0003MSA
2 Remove front axle differential. Engine 256.9 in model 290
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)

    Engine 256.9 in model 213, 238
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)

3 Drain engine oil.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Engine 256.9 in model 257.358 AP18.00-P-0101MRS
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Engine 256.9 in model 213, 238, 257 (except 257.358), 290 AP18.00-P-0101MRT
4 Remove cylinder head.   AR01.30-P-5800MSA 
5 Remove screws (3, 4) contrary to the tightening procedure. Bolt plan for timing case cover
IMPORTANT Pay attention to different lengths of screws.

6 Remove timing case cover (1). NOTES
Do not drive in any tools between the timing case cover (1) and crankcase (2) to remove. Sealing surfaces will otherwise be damaged.
 
    SPECIAL TOOL Mounting wedge Fig 3
7 Remove radial shaft sealing ring (6).   AR03.20-P-3003MSA
CLEAN Clean     
8 Clean sealing surfaces on the timing case cover (1), crankcase (2), and oil pan (5). NOTES
Do not use any sharp-edged tools or abrasive paper.
The sealing surfaces will otherwise be damaged.
 
    Loctite 7200 *BR00.45-Z-1038-04A 
    Loctite 7063 (400 ml) cleaning spray *BR00.45-Z-1046-04A 
INSTALLING Install     
9 Install timing case cover (1).
Notes on sealant path for timing case cover
  AH01.40-P-1000-01MRT 
    NOTES
Observe notes on sealant path.
Leaks can occur otherwise.
IMPORTANT Apply sealing compound to the timing case cover (1).
The pilot bushings of the crankcase (2) must engage in the cutouts in the timing case cover (1).
 
    Sealant, Loctite 5970, 50 ml *BR00.45-Z-1013-01A 
    SPECIAL TOOL Application gun Fig 2
10 Tighten screws (3, 4). Bolt plan for timing case cover
IMPORTANT Pay attention to different lengths of screws.
Observe tightening procedure.

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, oil pan upper part to timing case *BA01.45-P-1004-01MRT 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, timing case to crankcase *BA01.40-P-1002-03MRT 
11 Install radial shaft sealing ring (6).   AR03.20-P-3003MSA
12 Install cylinder head.   AR01.30-P-5800MSA 
13 Install front axle differential. Engine 256.9 in model 290
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)

14 Install integrated starter alternator (A79). INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Do not install upper engine cover until after the leak test. AR15.40-P-0003MSA
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
15 Carry out engine test run and check engine for proper operation and leak tightness.    
16 Install lower engine compartment lining. Engine 256.9 in model 213, 238 AR61.20-P-1105LWE
    Engine 256.9 in model 290 AR61.20-P-1105FRX
    Engine 256.9 in model 257 AR61.20-P-1105FR
17 Install upper engine cover.   AR01.10-P-2405MSA
