Navigation, Basic Function - GF82.85-P-9901A
Model all (CAR) with code 365 (Hard drive navigation)
Overview
This service information contains information on:
- Function of navigation
- Position finding
- Reception of traffic information
- Retrofitting navigation
- Updating of map data
General
The navigation system shows navigation maps in the display of the multimedia system and the instrument cluster and enables route guidance to a desired destination. The navigation system is integrated in the multimedia system control. The navigation system is operated via the multimedia system's control and display elements.
Depending on the equipment installed, the destination can also be entered using control elements in the rear passenger compartment.
Depending on the equipment installed, the current vehicle position on the map can also be shown on the rear displays.
Function requirements
- No active route guidance due to smartphone integration
Function of navigation
The multimedia system control generates the map displays using the map data stored on the integrated hard drive.
During active route guidance, the following component parts show the visual driving instructions (depending on the equipment installed):
- Media display
- Display on instrument cluster
- Head-up display
The speaker system outputs the acoustic driving instructions via the speakers in the front area of the vehicle. If necessary, the multimedia system control reduces the output level of active audio sources. Whether navigation announcements are output during a phone call can be set via the multimedia system.
Position finding
The position finding is based on satellite positioning systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo). A receiver in the multimedia system control receives the satellite signals over the GPS antenna. From the satellite signals, the multimedia system control calculates the current position of the vehicle. For position finding it is necessary to receive signals from at least three satellites.
The following situations lead to disrupted reception:
- Atmospheric interference (e.g. inclement weather, water vapor, fog)
- Signal reflections, e.g. from walls of buildings
- Signal shadowing (e.g. in built-up areas, in tunnels, due to high buildings or trees)
A new position finding process can take several minutes (up to 5 min during initial startup).
Multimedia system control uses data from the integrated gyro sensor, the acceleration sensor, and wheel speed signals for even more accurate position finding. From these, the multimedia system control calculates the current position of the vehicle on the basis of the last location and travel direction determined from the satellite signals. Depending on the equipment installed, the multimedia system control makes the position finding data available to the telematics services control unit as well.
Reception of traffic information
The navigation system can take the current traffic situation into account for route guidance. The multimedia system control receives information about the traffic situation from the following sources, depending on the equipment installed:
- Real-time traffic data from the telematics services control unit (Live Traffic Information)
- Traffic Message Channel (TMC) via the Radio Data System (RDS) or the Radio Broadcast Data System (RBDS) of FM radio mode (country-dependent)
- VICS data (Vehicle Information and Communication System) from the radio system and as a telematics service (only in Japan)
Live Traffic Information: If real-time traffic data are not available (subscription expired/outside countries covered by traffic data service), the navigation system uses the TMC traffic messages, if available.
Retrofitting navigation
In vehicles with navigation pre-installation, it is possible to retrofit the navigation system. The function is enabled via the Mercedes-Benz Customer Portal. The retrofit is only available in countries with "Mercedes me".
Updating of map data
Map data are updated through the manual or automatic software update.
