Internet connection, general 

The Internet connection function is divided into the following subfunctions:

The function is activated via the "Globe" symbol in the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8). Rotating the wheel on the Audio/COMAND controller (A40/9s11) pulls the "System" panel on the Audio/COMAND display into the foreground. The selection is confirmed by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller on the Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9).

The Audio/COMAND control panel signals are forwarded as follows:

Telematics CAN (CAN A) →

COMAND controller unit (A40/3) →

LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signal) line →

Audio/COMAND display

The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is always used as the server to connecting to the Internet. This means that the user is only generally identifiable as a user of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway when surfing the net and using services, and cannot be located in the network via his activities.

The COMAND controller unit sends data to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway via a coded VPN (virtual private network) connection over the following route:

Bluetooth® antenna (A2/91) →

In the event of a malfunction in the multifunction antenna or if reception is poor, the communication module integrated in the emergency call system control unit automatically sends and receives the cellular telephone signals via the emergency call system antenna (A2/52).

In accordance with requests from the COMAND controller unit, the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway exchanges information with the World Wide Web and the service providers for "COMAND on-line" via the Internet and transmits the received data to the COMAND controller unit in the opposite direction.

IMPORTANT Activating a manual or automatic emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB information call interrupts the Internet connection.

The function is activated via the "Globe" symbol in the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display.

With a connection via Personal Area Network (PAN), the Internet enable function must be activated on the mobile phone.

With a connection via Dial-up Networking (DUN), the dial-in data must be provided via the audio equipment. By turning the Audio/COMAND controller, the "System" panel is shown in the foreground on the Audio/COMAND display. After selection or addition of the mobile telephone network provider, further access information (e.g. on the tariff) must be specified that can be obtained from the mobile telephone network provider. As soon as the data is available, the connection to the Internet is set up.

The signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are received by the audio equipment via telematics CAN, processed and shown on the Audio/COMAND display via an LVDS line.

The mobile telephone network provider can either be selected from the country-specific lists or, if the mobile telephone network provider cannot be found in the list, added using "New Provider". Additional access data is required for dial-up (e.g. about the tariff), which is available from the mobile telephone network provider. As soon as the data is available, the connection to the Internet is set up.

IMPORTANT Fees: Internet access and services are free from Mercedes-Benz. However, fees must be paid to the mobile telephone network provider in accordance with the respective mobile phone contract. Display options and the "Scissors (disconnect connection)" soft key in the function bar make it easier to manage costs with either a time or data volume contract.

On vehicles with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP)), the COMAND controller unit sends data over a coded VPN connection as follows to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway:

The components of the mobile phone system support the Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile phone standard as of 15.01.2015.

To match requests from the COMAND controller unit, the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway exchanges information with the World Wide Web and the service providers for "COMAND On-line" over the Internet. The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway sends the received data the opposite way over the encoded VPN connection to the COMAND controller unit.

IMPORTANT Multiple use of mobile phone: Basically, two functions can be processed in parallel via mobile phones that are suitable for the Internet connection function, i.e. it is possible to make phone calls while connected to the Internet. However, this depends on the quality of the respective network. If the network connection is too weak, the Internet connection is merely maintained while the telephone call is being made.

Internet usage 

The Internet can be used in the vehicle in the following ways:

The services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway are supplementary to the navigation system and can be used while driving. Free surfing is only possible if the vehicle is stationary.

On vehicles as of 01.06.2013, audio signals from the Internet can also be played back. The COMAND controller unit outputs the audio signals from the Internet via the speaker system or, on vehicles with code 810 (Sound system), sends them via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3).

If no control signals for the Internet function are received for a certain time, the COMAND controller unit automatically disconnects the Internet connection. If necessary the Internet connection is automatically set up again.

Use of Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway services ("COMAND On-line") 

Rotating the Audio/COMAND controller brings the "COMAND On-line" panel into the foreground on the Audio/COMAND display. The selection is confirmed by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller on the Audio/COMAND control panel.

The individual services and the options for the services can now be actuated in the same way using the Audio/COMAND control panel.

The method of operation and the screen displays have been adapted to the general operation of the COMAND control unit and the design of the displays on the Audio/COMAND display to such an extent that operation is essentially intuitive.

IMPORTANT The left "Back" button (A40/9s2) of the Audio/COMAND controller on the Audio/COMAND control panel returns you to the start page of "COMAND Online".

The Audio/COMAND control panel signals are forwarded as follows:

The following services, for example, can be used in "COMAND On-line":

IMPORTANT Other services are possible or can be retrofitted but are not described in detail here.

Search for points of interest 

Search term can be selected from list or entered on the character bar on the audio/COMAND display. Points of interest can be searched for as a search term at the current location, navigation destination, arbitrary location (free entry) or along the route.

IMPORTANT The area that is being searched is defined under "Options".

The search results appear in the form of a list. If the list entry contains a telephone number, a telephone connection can be set up.

Search results can be stored in the address book or under "Personal POIs" on the Secure Digital (SD) card in the SD card slot of the COMAND controller unit. A selected search result can be transferred to the navigation system, and in this case the COMAND controller unit switches to the navigation menu.

Weather 

Weather information is displayed either as a weather data table or as a weather map.

In the basic setting the current weather data for the current location of the vehicle and forecasts for the next few hours are displayed.

However, different time periods and locations can be selected, such as information about the weather along the route or at the destination. In addition city names or ZIP codes can be entered with the character bar on the audio/COMAND display. The most up-to-date measurements and forecasts are always displayed.

The topicality of the data depends on the relationship between the time of the query and the time of the last measurement.

IMPORTANT Weather data are sent from the weather station nearest to the entered location. It can take a while to transfer and display the respective data, particularly if maps are being displayed or with a weak network connection.

Additional function requirements for loading points of interest or routes (with CODE 348 (Emergency call/Assist system)) 

IMPORTANT POIs or routes that have been sent to the vehicle via the Internet (e.g. via Google Maps) are also transmitted to the vehicle via the Service Center.

Load POIs or routes (with CODE 348 (Emergency call/Assist system)) 

The Service Center transmits POIs or routes to the emergency call system control unit via the mobile telephone network and the multifunction antenna. If circuit 15 is OFF, the emergency call system control unit stores the data in an integrated buffer.

IMPORTANT A maximum of 100 POIs and 30 routes each with up to 255 route points can be stored. If the capacity of the buffer is exceeded, the oldest POIs or routes are overwritten.

With circuit 15 ON and the COMAND controller unit switched on, the emergency call system control unit sends the map data over the following path:

The reception of information is displayed by the COMAND controller unit by means of a pop-up window on the Audio/COMAND display.

Using the "Import" menu item, the POIs or routes are copied from the buffer to the navigation system or the address book of the COMAND controller unit. Only then are the POIs and routes transmitted to the vehicle permanently available in the vehicle.

IMPORTANT Map data can be sent by the Service Center as part of an emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB-Info call.

Additional function requirements for loading POIs or routes (without CODE 348 (Emergency call/Assist system)) 

IMPORTANT Points of interest that have been found on the Internet via Google Maps or routes that have been planned using Google Maps can be transmitted via Google Maps to the vehicle.

Load POIs or routes (without CODE 348 (Emergency call/Assist system)) 

The "Load POIs and routes" service lists the POIs and routes that have been sent to the vehicle and makes it possible to transfer them from the clipboard to the navigation system and the address book of the COMAND controller unit using the "Import" menu item. POIs and routes that have been sent via Google Maps are then only continuously available in the vehicle if they have been transferred to the navigation system or the address book of the COMAND controller unit using "Import" with the "Load POIs and routes" service.

Points of interests can be loaded but no routes. The POIs must always be taken from the COMAND controller unit address book and selected from there as the navigation destination.

IMPORTANT The capacity of the buffer is restricted to 20 routes and 50 points of interest. If more POIs and routes are sent than can be stored in the clipboard, the oldest POIs and routes are overwritten.

IMPORTANT Because of the limited capacity of the buffer, transmitted POIs and routes are only available for loading for a limited time period (approx. 7 days), and only a limited number of POIs and routes can be made available for loading within the same time period.

IMPORTANT If the POI or route is only needed immediately and not permanently, the navigation can be started directly via the "Navigate" menu entry without the POI or route being stored permanently. This function is also available without an SD card.

Additional function requirements for free surfing 

Unrestricted surfing 

In order to connect to the Internet, either a URL must be entered or a page that is stored under "Favorites" must be selected.

In order to navigate on the page, you can either move the cursor using the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel as though you were using a mouse, or jump from one selectable object (e.g. link) to the next by turning the Audio/COMAND controller on the current page (this highlights the object).

Pressing the Audio/COMAND controller vertically downward calls up the menu. When activating a link it is possible to choose between opening the link and opening the main menu after pressing the Audio/COMAND controller for the first time.

When jumping to a text entry field, the character toolbar on the Audio/COMAND display can be used to enter text.

IMPORTANT Pressing the left "Back" button of the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel goes back one page during free surfing (as on a computer). Pressing the "Delete" button (A40/9s12) to the right of the Audio/COMAND controller closes the browser.

Surfing with the mobile browser is subject to the following technical restrictions:

IMPORTANT The Internet browser can play Flash, but cannot display any Flash videos.

IMPORTANT Web pages may appear differently than they do on a PC. This is because some web site providers provide their pages to a mobile browser in a different format that is specially designed for mobile devices, upon which Mercedes-Benz does not have any influence.
