General
Driving lights include all the light functions required for optimum illumination of the roadway:
- Low beam
- High beam
- Daytime Running Lights
- Headlamp leveling
- Cornering light (dynamic LED headlights)
- Variable light distribution (dynamic LED headlights)
- Automatic high beam (dynamic LED headlights)
Vehicles With LED Headlamps
The front lamp units are equipped with fan motors. Operation of the fan motors provides active ventilation of the front lamp units (thermal management).
The fan motors are switched on when low beam or high beam are switched on.
Function requirements
- Circuit 15 ON (actuate for manual low beam)
- Engine running or drivetrain operational or vehicle speed more than 3 km/h. (for automatic low beam)
- Exterior lights switch in "AUTO" position (for automatic low beam)
- Circuit 15R ON (for actuation of high beam/headlamp flasher function)
- Low beam ON (for actuation of high beam/high beam function)
- Automatic high beam (with dynamic LED headlamps) not active (actuate for high beam)
Function
The low beam illuminates the roadway without dazzling other road users. Low beam headlamps are operated using the exterior lights switch.
Actuate Manual Low Beam
The exterior lighting control unit actuates the low beam in the front lamp units independently or their actuation is requested. This takes place depending on the version of the front lamp units (halogen headlamps or LED headlamps). Depending on the vehicle involved, the control unit for the exterior lighting is either the central signal acquisition and actuation module or the front signal acquisition and actuation module.
The activated low beam is displayed on the instrument cluster.
On vehicles equipped with halogen headlamps, the different light color for the illuminants means that the standing lights are switched off when low beam is on.
The front standing lights are not switched off in the following countries:
- Brazil
- Georgia
- Canada
- Korea
- Russia
- Ukraine
- USA
- Belarus
Actuate Automatic Low Beam
The low beam is switched on or off depending on the ambient brightness or depending on the activities of the windshield wiper system. The ambient brightness is sensed by the light sensor in the rain and light sensor. The windshield wiper system control (dependent on vehicle either the central signal acquisition and actuation module or the front signal acquisition and actuation module) provides information on its activities.
The automatic low beam is purely a comfort function and it does not relieve the driver of the need to follow the operating instructions as prescribed by the road traffic regulations.
In the event of any light sensor failure, the low beam is not deactivated until the engine is switched off.
If the windshield wiper system is active for 20 s with a wipe cycle time of less than 6 s, the low beam is switched on. If there are no wipe cycles for 60 s, the low beam is switched off. The low beam is also switched off if the wiper activities are manually canceled. The low beam remains switched on when the wiper start suppression is active. If the wiper startup suppression function is canceled, the low beam remains switched on for a further 60 s.
With automatic low beam, the low beam and the standing lights are automatically switched on and off. The exterior lighting control unit actuates the low beam in the front lamp units independently or their actuation is requested. This takes place depending on the version of the front lamp units (halogen headlamps or LED headlamps). Depending on the vehicle involved, the control unit for the exterior lighting is either the central signal acquisition and actuation module or the front signal acquisition and actuation module.

Actuate High Beam
The high beam provides sufficient wide-area illumination of the roadway.
The high beam is operated using the combination switch.
If the combination switch is pulled back and held (headlamp flashing), the high beam is switched on for a maximum of 45 s. After this, a permanently pending request is interpreted as being defective and the high beam is switched off.
The exterior lighting control unit actuates the high beam in the front lamp units independently or their actuation is requested. This takes place depending on the version of the front lamp units (halogen headlamps or LED headlamps). Depending on the vehicle involved, the control unit for the exterior lighting is either the central signal acquisition and actuation module or the front signal acquisition and actuation module.
The activated high beam is displayed on the instrument cluster.
With the ULTRA RANGE high beam, the range of the high beam is set to the legally permissible maximum On. Compared to static halogen or LED headlights, the light performance in the central area is improved by more than 150 meters.
