Rear Seat Entertainment system, general

The Rear Seat Entertainment system is the entertainment system for the rear passengers and includes the following areas:

IMPORTANT Model 222

up to model year 2018

with code 406 (Rear multicontour seat)

with code 864 (Rear compartment entertainment package)

The Rear Seat Entertainment System controller unit can also be used to make seat adjustments for the multicontour seats in the rear passenger compartment.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit manages the media sources in the rear and forms the telematics network via the MOST together with the COMAND controller unit. This means that all media sources of the COMAND controller unit can also be used via the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit. The TV picture signals (with code (865) TV tuner) are received by the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit from the tuner unit via an LVDS line.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit can be operated in the following way:

The Rear Seat Entertainment system has the following system-specific components:

The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit receives the Kleer® radio signals of the remote control via the following route: Headphones and remote control antenna →

COMAND controller unit →

MOST

IMPORTANT Intervention in the use of the Rear Seat Entertainment system can take place from the front seats via the "Parental Control" function of the COMAND controller unit.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system function includes the following procedures:

Function sequence, rear media sources

The following media sources are controlled and managed via the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit:

IMPORTANT Media transfer protocol (MTP) devices, Zune MP3 players or iPods® can also be connected to the connections of the rear USB electrical connector (X115/2-1, X115/2-2), but it is not possible to connect two Apple® devices simultaneously.

The integrated DVD drive is managed internally by the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit. The Bluetooth® audio signals are received by the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit from the rear Bluetooth® antenna. The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit receives the signals from connected mobile terminals from the rear AUX connection electrical connector or the rear USB electrical connector (X115/2-1, X115/2-2). The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit supplies the mobile terminals connected to the rear USB electrical connector (X115/2-1, X115/2-2) with voltage.

The signals for Bluetooth® audio are received by the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit from the rear Bluetooth® antenna (with code 855 (Telephony in the rear) or code 856 (Business telephony in the rear)).

The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit receives the signals from the rear AUX connection electrical connector and the rear USB electrical connector (X115/2-1, X115/2-2) via a direct line. Mobile terminals that are connected to the rear AUX connection electrical connector are not automatically detected, but have to be selected using the Aux menu of the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit. Operation takes place on the connected mobile terminal.

Mobile terminals connected to the rear USB 1 electrical connector or rear USB 2 electrical connector are detected automatically and displayed as media sources on the respective active display (A40/5, A40/6). Operation is controlled by the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit transmits the audio signals to the relevant radio frequency headphones via an integrated Kleer® radio interface. Audio signals for cabled headphones and video signals are transmitted by the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit via an LVDS line to the respective display (A40/5, A40/6). The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit sends control signals along the following path:

MOST →

COMAND controller unit →

Telematics CAN →

Left rear display or right rear display

IMPORTANT The connection for cabled headphones is integrated in the respective display (A40/5, A40/6).

Function sequence for requesting media sources in the telematics network

The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit requests all media sources that it does not manage itself from the COMAND controller unit via MOST, and forwards control signals for these media sources to the COMAND controller unit via the same route. The COMAND controller unit processes the signals of the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit and transmits the requested signals (except TV video signals (with code 865 (TV tuner))) via MOST to the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit. The TV video signals (with code 865 (TV tuner)) are transmitted by the tuner unit via an LVDS line to the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit.

Function sequence for extended functions for navigation mode

Selected navigation-based functions can be called up in the Rear Seat Entertainment system in order to provide the rear passengers with information. The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit receives the signals via MOST from the COMAND controller unit and forwards them via an LVDS line to the respective display (A40/5, A40/6).

The following navigation-based functions are available:

Online map display

If an Internet connection is available, an online map display can be requested from the service provider by the Rear Seat Entertainment system. The online map display also makes it possible to create routes and transmit routes to the COMAND controller unit.

"Drive Show"

The "Drive Show" provides information about the current route (e.g. distance from destination, driving time to destination) in a sequence of diagrams that are each displayed for about 10 s. The contents depend on the status of the navigation system (route guidance active or inactive), the vehicle equipment (e.g. hybrid vehicle) and the availability of the Internet connection. The user cannot influence the "Drive Show", only switch on and off.

Access option to Mercedes-Benz "Travel Guide" (accessory)

If the Mercedes-Benz "Travel Guide" (accessory) is available, it can also be used via the Rear Seat Entertainment System controller unit.
