IMPORTANTInformation on touchpad 

The touchpad is installed in two variants.

Variant 1 (with code 448 (Touchpad)): The touchpad is installed together with the Audio/COMAND control panel. The touchpad is connected only to the telematics CAN.

Variant 2 (with code 446 (Touchpad only)): The touchpad is installed instead of the Audio/COMAND control panel. In this case, the lower control panel is connected to the touchpad via the LCP-LIN. The touchpad is also connected to the telematics CAN.

Function requirements, general 

General telematics services 

At the vehicle side, the telematics services are realized by the HERMES control unit via a cellular telephone system connection to the Service Center. The HERMES control unit transmits the mobile telephone signals into the mobile telephone network via the following antenna connection, and receives them via the reverse route:

Telephone antenna splitter (model 222) or emergency call system antenna splitter (model 217) →

Left emergency call system antenna and right emergency call system antenna (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) and multifunction antenna (model 222) or telematics services antenna (model 217)

IMPORTANT The antennas form a sending and receiving diversity.

For some services, the status of circuit 15 is taken into consideration. The electronic ignition lock control unit transmits the status of circuit 15 to the HERMES control unit via diagnostic CAN.

The function description of telematics services encompasses the following chapters:

IMPORTANT Model 217, 222

as of model year 2019

with code 362 (HERMES communications module LTE)

with code 494 (US version)

The Mercedes me connect telematics services are offered. Market-specific deviations with service offers are possible.

IMPORTANT The emergency call, Internet connection and the transfer of real-time traffic data are described elsewhere.

Standard telematics services (Mercedes me connect) 

The following services, e.g. are available:

By pressing the Mercedes me connect button (as of 01.06.2018) or the breakdown assistance button (up to 31.05.2018), the customer can request technical help via an voice connection with the Service Center. With the customer's consent, vehicle data is transmitted in order to facilitate quick and effective assistance.

Telematics services (Mercedes me connect) 

These app services allow customer to use their terminals (e.g. smartphone, tablet or PC) to send information and operation requests via the Service Center to the vehicle and receive up-to-date vehicle data prepared by the app.

IMPORTANT The vehicle owner can use the Internet site https://www.me.mercedes-benz.com  or the MB-App "Mercedes me connect" to configure and activate the "Mercedes me connect" Portal services.

The following telematics services are possible, e.g.:

IMPORTANT The telematics services can be used only in conjunction with a valid subscription.

Telematics services with code 494 (USA version) up to 31.05.2018 

The following services, e.g. are available:

IMPORTANTRemote Start:  Using the cellular telephone system connection to the Service Center, the HERMES control unit also receives the triggering signal for the "Remote Start" function (for pre-entry climate control). The "Remote Start" function starts the engine in a parked and locked vehicle (windows and doors closed) and switches it off again after a limited period of time in order for the air conditioning system's "Load Mode" to reach pre-entry climate control. The HERMES control unit forwards the triggering signal via the diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit.

Additional function requirements for voice connection between vehicle and Service Center 

Voice connection between vehicle and Service Center 

IMPORTANT The setup of a voice connection to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center is aborted after several unsuccessful dialing attempts, and a corresponding message appears on the Audio/COMAND display. The voice connection function between the vehicle and the Service Center is split up into the following subfunctions:

Triggering the voice connection via the Mercedes me connect button, the breakdown assistance button or the MB Info button 

After pressing one of the following buttons, the HERMES control unit establishes a voice connection with the Service Center:

IMPORTANT At the same time as a voice connection is established, a data telegram is transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center containing e.g. the following data: time stamp, global navigation system (GPS) position, the language set in the head unit and the vehicle identification number.

As long as the voice connection is activated, the light-emitting diode integrated into the button flashes; the HERMES control unit actuates the Mercedes me connect button, the breakdown assistance button or the MB Info button in the opposite direction.

This is also indicated in the instrument cluster and on the audio/COMAND display. For the display in the instrument cluster, the HERMES control unit transmits signals via the following route:

IMPORTANT The Service Center can perform a remote diagnosis if necessary.

IMPORTANT The Service Center can transmit map data to the vehicle if necessary. The data is made available to the navigation module of the head unit.

Triggering the voice connection via the "MB-Contact" address book entry 

Via the antenna connection, the HERMES control unit establishes a voice connection with the Mercedes-Benz Service Center by selecting the reserved "MB-Contact" address book entry.

The permanently reserved address book entry "MB-Contact" can be selected using the following components:

The control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel (with code 448 (Touchpad)) or the touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only) or with code 448 (Touchpad)) are forwarded to the head unit via telematics CAN.

The head unit multifunction steering wheel button group control signals are read in via the following route:

Head unit

The voice control system is activated with the voice control on switch and favorites on the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group. The VCS is automatically switched off when the call is set up. When the VCS is active, the voice commands are registered by the driver hands-free system microphone and forwarded via a direct line to the head unit.

IMPORTANT The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".

If the address book entry "MB Contact" was selected, the head unit sends the signal via the following route:

Mute function 

On establishment of the voice link, the HERMES control unit transmits a signal for muting the audio sources via a direct line to the following components, which actuate the speaker system:

Hands-free 

The hands-free system is not available for telephone calls for the duration of the voice connection.

The volume adjustment button (with code 448 (Touchpad)) of the Audio/COMAND control panel transmits the volume setting via the following route:

After a data telegram has been transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center, the user can speak to a service receptionist via the voice connection. The Mercedes-Benz Service Center carries out the call in the language that was selected in the system settings of the head unit and transmitted in the data telegram, where possible. The HERMES control unit receives outgoing voice signals from the driver hands-free system microphone via the head unit.

The HERMES control unit outputs the incoming voice signals over the center instrument panel speaker (except code 811 (Advanced sound system)) or over the center instrument panel midrange speaker (with code 811 (Advanced sound system)).

The volume of the voice output can be adjusted using the following controls:

Termination of the voice connection 

The voice connection can be terminated via the accept/terminate phone call switch of the multifunction steering wheel button group if this is not carried out by the Mercedes-Benz Service Center. The head unit multifunction steering wheel button group control signals are read in via the following route:

Prioritization 

For the services that require a voice connection between the vehicle and the Service Center, the prioritization shown below applies.

IMPORTANT Telematics services, e.g. accident management, can also be triggered by the Service Center after an emergency call with the customer's consent. In this case, the voice connection that was set up for the emergency call is still used by means of redirecting within the Service Center. The emergency call is then converted into a service with lower priority.

Position finding 

A determination of the current vehicle position is essential for many telematics services. The HERMES control unit receives GPS (global navigation system) signals for this via the following route:

Forwarding of vehicle data, display messages, data queries and operating requests 

The HERMES control unit forwards the data, data queries and operating requests that have been received via the cellular telephone system connection to the service center via the diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit, from where they are distributed further according to the respective requests. The HERMES control unit receives the vehicle data via the diagnostic CAN from the electronic ignition lock control unit, and transmits these and the position finding data according to the requirements to the Service Center via the antenna connection.

The content shown on the Audio/COMAND display (e.g. pop-up-window, vehicle locating symbol, field strength) is forwarded by the HERMES control unit via the following route:

Audio/COMAND display

The head unit transmits the control communication (e.g. switch on) to the Audio/COMAND display via the telematics CAN.

Some messages on the Audio/COMAND display can be confirmed using the Audio/COMAND control panel (with code 448 (Touchpad)) or the touchpad (with code 448 (Touchpad) or with code 446 (Touchpad only)). The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the signals via the following route:
