Mobile telephone system, general
A differentiation is made between the following equipment and utilization variants in the mobile phone system:
- Basic telephony
- Comfort telephony (with code 386 (Comfort telephony))
- Telephony with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile))
- Connection taken over by the rear mobile phone system (with code 855 (Telephony in the rear) or with code 856 (Business telephony in the rear))
- Transfer connection to the rear mobile phone system (with code 855 (Telephony in the rear) or with code 856 (Business telephony in the rear))
All variants use Bluetooth® technology for data transfer.

Telephony using the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) requires the Convenience Telephony package. Instead of the mobile phone cradle (accessories) or the universal smartphone cradle, the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be plugged into the mobile phone contact plate.

A mobile phone authorized at the COMAND controller unit can also be used as a modem for accessing the Internet or as a playback device as part of Bluetooth® Audio.
The COMAND controller unit transmits and receives mobile phone signals over the Bluetooth® antenna. The COMAND controller unit generates the displays messages and transmits them to the Audio/COMAND display via an LVDS line.
The mobile phone system is described here using basic telephony as an example. The special comfort telephony features are summarized at the end of this document.

Bluetooth®
Using Bluetooth®, it is possible to connect modern communication devices such as personal digital assistants (PDA) or notebooks to the mobile phone system quickly and easily. Bluetooth® is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth® devices (e.g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth®, in addition to the wide availability of Bluetooth® devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth® devices. The extremely high level of data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of this type of Bluetooth® network are what makes the use of Bluetooth® in the vehicle interesting. The COMAND controller unit can integrate mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy via the mobile phone Bluetooth® interface and the Bluetooth® antenna. The COMAND controller unit automatically searches for the last two connected mobile phones and connects to the mobile phone that responds first.

It first looks for a mobile phone plugged into the mobile phone cradle (accessories) or the universal smartphone cradle.
If the mobile phone is not automatically connected to the COMAND controller unit or if the COMAND controller unit is to establish a connection to another mobile phone, then the connection must be made manually via the telephone base function. Authorized telephones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized telephones must be authorized first.

SAP telephones are listed in a separate list. Up to 15 mobile phones and up to 15 SAP telephones can be authorized at the same time. If more telephones are authorized, the oldest data records in each case will be overwritten. Detailed information on authorization is available in the respective operator's manual.
Switch on/off characteristics
A mobile phone operated via Bluetooth® is switched on and off on the mobile phone itself. The Personal Identification Number (PIN) prompt, if configured on the mobile phone and it is transmitting the status, occurs on the mobile phone only and the PIN has to be entered into the mobile phone. After logging into the mobile telephone network provider's mobile telephone network, a display is shown on the Audio/COMAND display.
The switch-off signal via the mobile phone button is processed internally in the mobile phone. If the rechargeable battery of the mobile phone is empty, the mobile phone is also switched off. This process also runs internally in the mobile phone.
The COMAND controller unit can be switched on with the "ON" button on the Audio/COMAND control panel.
Call signal
The COMAND controller unit receives the call signal from the mobile phone via the Bluetooth® antenna. The COMAND controller unit transmits the ringing tone to the speaker system via direct lines or, in vehicles with code 810 (Sound-System) or code 811 (Advanced Sound-System), to the sound system amplifier control unit via MOST. This control unit then amplifies and transmits the signals to the speaker system. If the mobile phone supports "In-band ringing", the mobile phone ring tone is emitted over the speakers, otherwise the default ring tone of the COMAND controller unit is used. The COMAND controller unit mutes the currently active audio source (e.g. with radio mode) (mute function) and displays the caller ID over the LVDS line on the Audio/COMAND display.
Establish, end, accept, reject or toggle call
Telephone numbers can be entered using the buttons or a character bar on the Audio/COMAND display or they can be searched for and selected in call lists or in the address book. The mobile phone system can be operated using the following components:
- Mobile phone

- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
- Remote control (with code 816 (Entertainment remote control) or with code 867 (SPLITVIEW))

The control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded via telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

Multifunction steering wheel button groups
The basic telephone function can be called up and operated using the scroll forward and back button, system selection button, the "back" button and the OK button of the left multifunction steering wheel button group, and the + and - button for setting specific functions and for volume adjustment found in the right multifunction steering wheel button group. The accept and terminate phone call button of the right multifunction steering wheel button group can be used to set up the call and calls can be accepted, rejected, terminated or toggled.

COMAND control unit
Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
If the voice control system is active, the hands-free system microphone records the voice commands of the user and forwards them to the COMAND controller unit over a direct line. The COMAND controller unit transmits the control signals to the mobile phone via the Bluetooth® antenna. When a call is being connected or a call being accepted, the voice control system is automatically switched off.
Remote control (with code 816 (Entertainment remote control) or with code 867 (SPLITVIEW))
The mobile phone system can be operated using the remote control. The Kleer® radio signals of the remote control are received by the COMAND controller unit via the headphones and remote control antenna.
Touchpad (with code 448 (Touchpad))
The mobile phone system can be operated using the touchpad. The touchpad sends the control signals via telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.
The signals from the touchpad are looped through by the Audio/COMAND control panel.
Using the phone in hands-free mode
The voice input in hands-free mode is picked up by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit. The COMAND controller unit transmits the signals via the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone. The COMAND controller unit receives the incoming voice signals via the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone and outputs them via the speaker system. In vehicles with code 810 (Sound system) or with code 811 (Advanced sound system), the COMAND controller unit forwards the incoming voice signals via the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and transmits them to the speaker system. The volume of the voice output can, for example, be adjusted using the volume adjustment button in the Audio/COMAND control panel, the + and - button for setting specific functions and for volume adjustment found in the right multifunction steering wheel button group, or the remote control (with code 816 (Entertainment remote control) or with code 867 (SPLITVIEW)).
Toggle: If during a telephone call another incoming call is received or another telephone connection is set up, then the new call is activated and the existing one put on hold. It is then possible to switch (toggle) between the active call and the one on hold. Toggling is only possible if the mobile phone can process more than one connection simultaneously.
Conference connection: If the mobile phone supports the function, it is possible - after several calls have been connected - to switch, not only between the calls, as for toggling, but to have all the calls active at the same time in a conference connection.
Mobile phone
Mobile phone operations are processed internally and not forwarded to the COMAND controller unit.
Audio/COMAND control panel and telephone keypad
The telephone base function is called up with the telephone button or with the Audio/COMAND controller. The "Back" button supports navigation in the menus. The telephone keypad (except code 448 (Touchpad)) can be used to enter telephone numbers and delete entries, the call can be established, calls can be accepted, rejected, terminated or toggled.
In order to use the telephone keypad the cover of the telephone keypad must be opened.
Phone book
The telephone book contains the telephone entries stored in the COMAND controller unit. The user can manage (view and delete) his contact data in the telephone book. The system can be provided with the stored information via the phone book entries and the connection established immediately.
Read access to the phone book of the mobile phone is provided if the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP). Otherwise, data can only be loaded from the telephone book of the mobile phone onto the COMAND controller unit as "vcards".
Address book
The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). The address book contains the address entries stored in the COMAND controller unit. Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book. Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries.
Address data from external devices (e.g. PDA, notebook, etc.) can be stored in the address book, whereupon the data is then permanently available as an address entry. Address data can be sent over the following system components from the external devices to the address book:
- Bluetooth® interface of mobile phone and the Bluetooth® antenna
- Secure Digital (SD) card reader to COMAND controller unit
- USB 1 electrical connector and USB 2 electrical connector of USB electrical connection
Address entries can contain the following:
- Last name, first name and company
- "Yomigana field" (for phonetic notation entry of name in the "Katakana" syllabary) (with code 498 (Japan version))
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (several telephone numbers can be saved under one address entry with different symbols)
- Geo position

The call can be established via the voice control system for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field".
Speed-dial list
The speed dial list consists of up to ten telephone numbers to which phone book entries can be assigned with digits from 0 to 9. The "Call list" and "Speed dial list" menu entries enable the user to manage the speed dial list. The speed dial list is active only when the telephone menu is active. The stored telephone number can be selected and the connection established in the following manner:
- Pressing and holding (approx. 2 s) the number on the telephone keypad
- Pressing and holding (approx. 2 s) one of the keys shown in the "Telephone" menu on the Audio/COMAND display (softkeys), e.g. with the Audio/COMAND controller
"Seamless switch"
"Seamless Switch" provides the following functionality:
- An existing telephone conversation can be continued in hands-free mode (e.g. when getting into the vehicle) if the COMAND controller unit is switched on and "Private Mode" is not activated on the mobile phone.
- An active telephone call can also be continued in hands-free mode for up to approx. 30 min after switching off the COMAND controller unit.
- An existing telephone call can be continued on the mobile phone when "Private Mode" is selected on the telephone or the telephone is removed from the mobile phone cradle (with code 386 (Comfort telephony), accessories, up to 30.11.2015) or from the universal Smartphone cradle (with code 386 (Comfort telephony), as of 01.12.2015).

With some Japanese mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the "Switch off if connection is interrupted" setting has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated because a brief connection interruption occurs.
Short Message Service (SMS) (except code 498 (Japan version))
The SMS application enables the user to receive, send or manage his/her SMS messages (e.g. to read or delete them). For this, the received SMS messages already stored on the mobile phone as well as all new incoming SMS messages are forwarded to the COMAND controller unit. The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receive SMS message.
- Read SMS message via the display of the mobile phone and via the Audio/COMAND display.
- Read SMS message aloud (German or English).
- Write and send SMS message.
- Delete SMS message.
- Mail inbox list of the 30 most recent SMS messages, sorted by date (choice of displaying either the sender or the start of the text for each SMS)
The SMS function with basic telephony requires the Message Access Profile (MAP) to be supported. Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.
As soon as the COMAND controller unit is connected to the mobile phone, it receives the SMS messages that are already stored in the mobile phone and any new incoming SMS messages via the Bluetooth® antenna of the mobile phone. The functions for writing, sending and managing SMS messages are activated through the basic telephone function. The COMAND controller unit displays the SMS messages on the Audio/COMAND Display via the LVDS line. When the SMS message is being read out, the COMAND controller unit transmits the audio signals either directly to the speaker system or, in vehicles with code 810 (Sound system) or code 811 (Advanced sound system), via the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit.
Additional function requirements for Mercedes-Benz Contact
- Telephone number of Service Center entered as a fixed, reserved telephone book entry or in the address book of the COMAND controller unit or in the telephone book of the mobile phone
Mercedes-Benz Contact
The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function provides user-friendly access to the services rendered by Mercedes-Benz Services by means of a fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the COMAND controller unit or the telephone book of the mobile phone. The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function uses the hands-free system (via Bluetooth®) and supports the service acceptance process at the Service Center by voice communication with synchronous transfer of the vehicle data.
The fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the COMAND controller unit or in the telephone book of the mobile phone is selected via one of the following components:
- Buttons on the mobile phone
- Telephone keypad
- Touchpad (with code 448 (Touchpad))
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
- Voice control system
- Remote control (with code 816 (Entertainment remote control) or with code 867 (SPLITVIEW))
Once voice connection has been established with the Service Center, the user can start the data transfer. The data transfer is activated by pressing a number key on the telephone keypad or via the touchpad (with code 448 (Touchpad)). For data transfer purposes, the COMAND controller unit checks the kilometer reading and the maintenance computer information on the instrument cluster via the user interface CAN. In addition, the map data is transferred by the navigation module integrated in the COMAND controller unit as well. The data is transmitted by the COMAND controller unit by means of Dual sound Multiple Frequency (DTMF) tones to the service center in the same way as when the call has been established successfully. After the data has been transferred to the Service Center, the user can talk to an employee at the Service Center or the workshop. The transmitted data is then available to the employee.
Comfort telephony (with code 386 (Comfort telephony)) or telephony with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP))
The mobile phone signals are sent and received via the multifunction antenna (model 222) or the telephone and stationary heater antenna (model 217). The connection is established via the mobile phone contact plate in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) between the front seats. In vehicles with code 386 (Comfort telephony) (except code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP))), a matching mobile phone cradle (accessories) up to 30.11.2015 or a universal smartphone cradle as of 01.12.2015 is inserted into the mobile phone contact plate and the corresponding mobile phone is then inserted into the cradle. In vehicles with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)), the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is connected to the mobile phone contact plate.
The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) supports the SIM Access Profile (SAP).
The comfort telephony and telephony with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)) exhibit the following features:

Mobile phone contact plate functions
The mobile phone contact plate fulfills the following functions:
- Connection of mobile phone or telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) to multifunction antenna (model 222) or to telephone and stationary heater antenna (model 217)
- Power supply for mobile phone or telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)
The connection to the COMAND controller unit (via Bluetooth®) is set up by the mobile phone or the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile).

In vehicles with code 386 (Comfort telephony), the mobile phone contact plate forwards the mobile phone signals over the mobile phone cradle (accessories), up to 30.11.2015, or the universal Smartphone cradle, as of 01.12.2015, to the mobile phone. On vehicles with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP)), the Bluetooth® module forwards the mobile phone signals to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP). The mobile phone or the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) routes the telephone signals via the Bluetooth® antenna to the COMAND controller unit.

with code 856 (Business telephony in rear passenger compartment)
A telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) that has been plugged into the rear mobile phone contact plate (X237/2) can also be connected to the COMAND controller unit; the same applies to a mobile phone that is connected to the rear mobile phone contact plate via the rear mobile phone cradle (A34/18) (accessories). The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) or the mobile phone then forwards the signals via the Bluetooth® antenna to the COMAND controller unit.
Switch-on characteristics
The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by a wake-up pulse from the COMAND controller unit when the COMAND controller unit is switched on. The COMAND controller unit transmits the signal to the mobile phone contact plate via a direct line. The mobile phone contact plate forwards the signal with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP)) to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) and with code 386 (Comfort telephony) via the mobile phone cradle (accessories), up to 30.11.2015, or via the universal Smartphone cradle, as of 01.12.2015, to the mobile phone.

Personal Identification Number (PIN) query
A prompt for the PIN is shown after switching on the mobile phone if the mobile phone is configured for this. The PIN prompt is shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the COMAND controller unit via an LVDS line. The PIN can be entered using the controls for the COMAND controller unit. For the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile))), the PIN for a connected telephone or the SIM card can be stored so that it does not have to be entered again when the phone is switched on.
Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)))
Before the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be used in the vehicle it must be authorized. Proceed as follows to do so:
- In order to set the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) to pairing mode, press the button equipped with an LED on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP).
- In the Telephone menu, select the "Connect MB SAP module" entry.
After this the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is connected to the vehicle.
The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be used in two different ways to make a call:
- With an inserted SIM card, the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is a fully-functional communication module.
- Without a SIM card the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can use the SIM card of another mobile phone in the vehicle. The mobile phone must support the SIM Access Profile (SAP) (SAP telephone). The required SIM card data is transmitted via Bluetooth® to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile).
SAP telephones that are to be used for telephony with the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile), must be connected once (authorized) to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile). Up to 15 SAP telephones can be authorized. After switching on the COMAND controller unit, an automatic search is performed for the last two SAP telephones to be used in the vehicle and the first one to respond to the prompt is connected, provided that the following conditions are met:
- The SAP telephone is not connected via Bluetooth® to any other device.
- There is no SIM card in the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile).
If another SAP telephone is to be connected, then the connection has to be interrupted first and then the corresponding SAP telephone manually connected by selecting it from the list of SAP telephones.
If necessary, the SAP telephone can be charged using a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile). To do this, the cover on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) has to be removed. The USB port on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can also be used for installing software updates, e.g. with a USB storage device (USB flash drive). The update files and the procedure are made available to the customer on the Internet.
The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is Internet capable when the mobile phone contract includes a data option.
A ring tone can be selected for the respective SIM card or SAP telephone from a list of ring tones.
SMS (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)))
State of the art mobile phones come with two memories for SMS messages: one on the telephone and one on the SIM card. As long as the mobile phone is used as an SAP telephone for telephony with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP)), incoming SMS messages can only be stored on the SAP telephone on the SIM card. Storing incoming SMS messages on the SIM card can lead to the following problems:
- SMS messages that were received while the telephone was connected to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) are frequently not displayed in the SMS inbox of the telephone.
- The memory on the SIM card is limited. Incoming SMS messages cannot be stored and displayed when the memory is full.
Connection taken over by the rear mobile phone system or transfer connection to the rear mobile phone system (with code 855 (Telephony in rear) or with code 856 (Business telephony in rear))
If the connection is transferred from the rear mobile phone system to the front mobile phone system (or vice-versa), the COMAND controller unit and the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit exchange the telephone signals via the MOST.
Near Field Communication (NFC), as of 01.06.2015
Using Near Field Communication, it is possible to quickly and easily connect mobile phones that support the NFC standard to the mobile phone system. The Near Field Communication is an international transmission standard for the wireless exchange of data via radio technology over very short distances of a few centimeters.
