Internet connection, general
The Internet connection function is divided into the following subfunctions:
- Internet access (dial-up) over COMAND controller unit with code 348 (Emergency call/Assist system)
- Internet access (dial-up) over COMAND controller unit except code 348 (Emergency call/Assist system)
- Internet usage
Additional function requirements for Internet access (dial-up) over COMAND controller unit with code 348 (Emergency call/Assist system)
- The wireless local area network (WLAN) function is activated on the COMAND controller unit.
- The Internet access service is authorized and the authorized communication module of the emergency call system control unit is configured with the telephone number of the service provider in question.
- The vehicle owner is registered and authorized at the Service Center.
- No prioritized service (emergency call (manual or automatic), MB information call, breakdown assistance) is activated.
- The clock in the vehicle is correctly set.
If the COMAND controller unit does not have the current time signal, certificate exchange problems can occur. Dialing in is only possible if a certificate can be successfully exchanged. GPS signals must be received in order to set the clock.
Internet access (dial-up) over COMAND controller unit with code 348 (Emergency call/Assist system)
The function is activated by calling up the menu ("Globe" symbol) using one of the following controls:
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
- Remote control (with code 816 (Entertainment remote control), with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment system or with code 867 (SPLITVIEW))
- Telephone keypad (except code 448 (Touchpad)), when stored as "Favorite"
- Touchpad (with code 448 (Touchpad))
The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the control signals over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.
The signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group or right multifunction steering wheel button group are forwarded as follows:

COMAND control unit
If operated over the VCS, the hands-free system microphone converts the voice commands into electrical signals, and forwards them to the COMAND controller unit.
The remote control (with code 816 (Entertainment remote control, with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment system) or with code 867 (SPLITVIEW) sends Kleer® radio signals, which the headphones and remote control antenna receives and forwards to the COMAND controller unit.
The signals of the telephone keypad are transferred via the following route:

The touchpad (with code 448 (Touchpad)) sends the signals over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.
The signals from the touchpad are looped through in the Audio/COMAND control panel.
The COMAND controller unit generates the screen display and forwards it over an LVDS line to the Audio/COMAND display.
When operated from the rear (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment system)), the contents are shown on the left rear display or on the right rear display. The COMAND controller unit sends the signals over MOST to the Rear Seat Entertainment controller unit. The Rear Seat Entertainment controller unit routes the signals over the low voltage differential signaling lines to the left rear display or the right rear display.
The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is always used as the server to connecting to the Internet. This means that the user is only generally identifiable as a user of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway when surfing the net and using services, and cannot be located in the network via his activities. To enable data to be exchanged between the vehicle and the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway, an encoded Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection is set up.
The COMAND controller unit sends data over the following path to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and application gateway:

If the multifunction antenna (model 222) or the telematics services antenna (model 217) fails or if reception is poor, the emergency call system control unit automatically sends and receives mobile phone signals over the emergency call system antenna splitter and the left emergency call system antenna or the right emergency call system antenna.
To match requests from the COMAND controller unit, the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway exchanges information with the World Wide Web and the service providers for "COMAND On-line" over the Internet. The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway sends the data received the opposite way to the COMAND controller unit.
Activating a manual or automatic emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB information call interrupts the Internet connection.
The Internet connection cannot be manually interrupted. In the event of any browser inactivity and after closing it the Internet connection is then disconnected after a defined period of time.
Additional function requirements for Internet access (dial-up) over the COMAND controller unit except code 348 (Emergency call/Assist system)
- A mobile phone is connected via Bluetooth® with the COMAND controller unit, and it supports Bluetooth® Profile Dial-up Networking (DUN) or a telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP))) is plugged onto the mobile phone contact plate or onto the rear mobile phone contact plate (with code 856 (Business telephony in rear)) and connected with the COMAND controller unit.
- As of 01.03.2014, dial-up is also possible via the integrated Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection (under the cover) of the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) (with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP))) via the provided connecting cable via the USB electrical connector (X115) or the rear USB electrical connector (X115/2) (with code 856 (Business telephony in rear)) with the COMAND controller unit or the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit (with code 856 (Business telephony in rear)).
- The mobile telephone network provider permits VPN connections and use of the mobile phone for data services.
- The clock in the vehicle is correctly set.

The mobile telephone network provider has to be selected first on the "System" panel. The mobile telephone network provider can either be selected from the country-specific lists or, if the mobile telephone network provider cannot be found in the list, added using "New Provider". Further access information is required (e.g. on the tariff) that can be obtained from the mobile telephone network provider. As soon as the data is available, the connection to the Internet is set up.
The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is always used as the server to connecting to the Internet. Fees: Internet access and services are free from Mercedes-Benz. However, fees must be paid to the mobile telephone network provider in accordance with the respective mobile phone contract. Display options and the "Scissors (disconnect connection)" soft key in the function bar make it easier to manage costs with either a time or data volume contract.

In vehicles with code 386 (Comfort telephony), the COMAND controller unit sends the switch-on signal to the mobile phone contact plate.
In vehicles with code 856 (Business telephony in rear), the COMAND controller unit sends the switch-on signal over the Rear Seat Entertainment controller unit (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment system)) to the rear mobile phone contact plate.

Activating a manual or automatic emergency call interrupts the Internet connection.
Multiple use of the mobile phone: As a matter of principle, mobile phones that support the Internet connection function can be used to process several functions in parallel. It is, e.g. possible to make a telephone call when connected to the Internet, although this is dependent on the quality of the network being used. If the network connection is too weak, the Internet connection is merely maintained while the telephone call is being made.
Internet usage
The Internet can be used via both the COMAND controller unit as well as the Rear Seat Entertainment controller unit (with code 864 Rear Seat Entertainment system)) and operated with the following components:
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Remote control (with code 816 (Entertainment remote control), with code 864 (Rear entertainment system) or with code 867 (SPLITVIEW))
- Touchpad (with code 448 (Touchpad))
When operated from the rear, the contents are shown on the left rear display or on the right rear display, or otherwise on the Audio/COMAND display.
The control logics and the design of the controls are similar in all cases. An example of Internet use is given below with operation on the Audio/COMAND control panel using the COMAND controller unit.
Individual functions can also be operated using the telephone keypad (e.g. entry of letters), the left multifunction steering wheel button group or the right multifunction steering wheel button group.
Audio signals from the Internet (e.g. Internet radio) are sent by the COMAND controller unit when activated through SPLITVIEW (with code 867) (SPLITVIEW)) over the headphones and remote control antenna to the radio frequency headphones or over the low voltage differential signaling line and the Audio/COMAND display to the headphones electrical connector (cabled). When activated from the rear (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment system)) the COMAND controller unit forwards the audio signals from the Internet over MOST to the Rear Seat Entertainment controller unit. The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit sends the audio signals over an integrated Kleer® radio interface to the respective radio frequency headphones. For cabled headphones, the Rear Seat Entertainment controller unit routes the audio signals over the low voltage differential signaling line to the headphones jack in each rear display.
In all other cases the COMAND controller unit emits the audio signals from the Internet at the speaker system or it forwards them in vehicles with code 810 (Sound system) or code 811 (Advanced sound system) over the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit.
The Internet can be used in the vehicle in the following ways:
- Use of Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway services ("COMAND On-line")
- Unrestricted surfing
The services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway are supplementary to the navigation system and can be used while driving. Free surfing is only possible if the vehicle is stationary.
If no control signals for the Internet function are received for a certain time, the COMAND controller unit automatically disconnects the Internet connection. In vehicles except code 348 (Emergency call/Assist system) the time period for automatic disconnection in response to inactivity can be configured on the "System" panel. If necessary the Internet connection is automatically set up again.
Use of Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway services ("COMAND On-line")
Turning the Audio/COMAND controller brings the "COMAND On-line" panel into the foreground on the audio/COMAND display. The selection is confirmed by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller. The individual services and the options for the services can now be actuated in the same way using the Audio/COMAND control panel. The method of operation and the screen displays have been adapted to the general operation of the COMAND controller unit and the design of the displays on the audio/COMAND display to such an extent that operation is essentially intuitive.
The "Back" button of the Audio/COMAND control panel leads to the "COMAND on-line" home screen.

Search for points of interest
Search terms can be selected from lists or entered on the character bar on the audio/COMAND display. Points of interest can be searched for as a search term at the current location, navigation destination, arbitrary location (free entry) or along the route.
The area that is being searched is defined under "Options".
The search results appear in the form of a list. Search results can be stored in the address book or under "Personal POIs" on the Secure Digital (SD) card in the SD card slot of the COMAND controller unit. If a list entry contains a telephone number, a telephone connection can be set up. A selected search result can be transferred to the navigation system, and in this case the COMAND controller unit switches to the navigation menu.
Weather
Weather information is displayed either as a weather data table or as a weather map.
In the basic setting the current weather data for the current location of the vehicle and forecasts for the next few hours are displayed.
However, different time periods and locations can be selected, such as information about the weather along the route or at the destination. In addition, city names or ZIP codes can be entered with the character bar on the audio/COMAND display. The most up-to-date measurements and forecasts are always displayed. The topicality of the data depends on the relationship between the time of the query and the time of the last measurement.
Weather data are sent from the weather station nearest to the entered location. It can take a while to transfer and display the respective data, particularly if maps are being displayed or with a weak network connection.
Additional function requirements for loading points of interest or routes (with code 348 (Emergency call/Assist system))
- An SD card is in the SD card slot on the COMAND controller unit.
- A POI or route has been sent to the vehicle by the Service Center.
POIs or routes that have been sent to the vehicle via the Internet (e.g. via Google Maps) are also transmitted to the vehicle via the Service Center.
Load POIs or routes (with code 348 (Emergency call/Assist system))
The Service Center transmits POIs or routes to the emergency call system control unit via the mobile telephone network and the multifunction antenna. If circuit 15 is OFF, the emergency call system control unit stores the data in an integrated buffer.
A maximum of 100 special destinations and 30 routes with up to 255 route points can be stored. If the capacity of the buffer is exceeded, the oldest POIs or routes are overwritten.
With circuit 15 ON, the emergency call system control unit sends the map data as follows:

The reception of information is displayed by the COMAND controller unit by means of a pop-up window on the audio/COMAND display. Using the "Import" menu item, the POIs or routes are copied from the buffer to the navigation system or the address book of the COMAND controller unit. Only then are the POIs and routes transmitted to the vehicle permanently available in the vehicle.
Map data can be sent by the Service Center as part of an emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB-Info call. In contrast to the POIs, routes are only transferred after the voice command connection has been terminated.
Additional function requirements for loading POIs or routes (without code 348 (Emergency call/Assist system))
- An SD card is in the SD card slot on the COMAND controller unit.
- A POI or route has been sent to the vehicle using Google Maps.
POIs that have been found on the Internet via Google Maps or routes that have been planned using Google Maps can be transmitted to the vehicle using the "Transmit" soft key on the Google Maps web pages. In order to do this, the vehicle identification number (VIN) or an email address that has been linked to the VIN beforehand must be specified. The combination of VIN and email address can be created, deleted or edited under "Options".
Load POIs or routes (without code 348 (Emergency call/Assist system))
The "Load POIs and routes" service lists the POIs and routes that have been sent to the vehicle and makes it possible to transfer them from the clipboard to the navigation system and the address book of the COMAND controller unit using the "Import" menu item. POIs and routes that have been sent via Google Maps are then only continuously available in the vehicle if they have been transferred to the navigation system or the address book of the COMAND controller unit using "Import" with the "Load POIs and routes" service.

Points of interests can be loaded but no routes. The POIs must always be taken from the COMAND controller unit address book and selected from there as the navigation destination.
The capacity of the buffer is restricted to 20 routes and 50 points of interest. If more POIs and routes are sent than can be stored in the clipboard, the oldest POIs and routes are overwritten.
Because of the limited capacity of the buffer, transmitted POIs and routes are only available for loading for a limited time period (approx. 7 days), and only a limited number of POIs and routes can be made available for loading within the same time period.
If the POI or route is only needed immediately and not permanently, the navigation can be started directly via the "Navigate" menu entry without the POI or route being stored permanently. This function is also available without an SD card.
Additional function requirements for free surfing
- Stationary vehicle (except code 867 (SPLITVIEW)) or operation from the rear (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment system, code 855 (Telephony in rear) with code 856 (Business telephony in rear))
Unrestricted surfing
In order to connect to the Internet, either a URL must be entered or a page that is stored under "Favorites" must be selected.
Navigating
In order to navigate on the page, you can either move the cursor using the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel as though you were using a mouse, or jump from one selectable object (e.g. link) to the next on the current page by turning the Audio/COMAND controller (this highlights the object).
Pressing the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel vertically downwards activates the menu. When activating a link, it is possible to choose between opening the link and opening the main menu after pressing the Audio/COMAND controller for the first time.
When jumping to a text entry field, the character toolbar on the audio/COMAND display can be used to enter text.
When surfing, you can jump back a page (as known from the computer) using the "Back" button of the Audio/COMAND control panel. Pressing the "Back" button in the Basic menu closes the browser.
Limits of the mobile browser
Surfing with the mobile browser is subject to the following technical restrictions:
- No downloads
The Internet browser can process flash and display flash videos.
Web pages may appear differently than they do on a PC. This is because some web site providers provide their pages to a mobile browser in a different format that is specially designed for mobile devices, upon which Mercedes-Benz does not have any influence.
