Audio/COMAND, general
The COMAND controller unit (A40/3) is the central control unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle. On vehicles with CODE 814 (DVD changer), the CD/DVD drive in the COMAND controller unit is designed as a changer, i.e. up to six CDs or DVDs can be selected.
The displays and menu presentations for the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) are generated in the COMAND controller unit.
The COMAND controller unit contains the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents:
- Audio mode function
- Disk changer function (with code 814 (DVD changer))
- Video mode function
- TV mode function (with code 865 (TV tuner))
- Internet connection function
- In-car hotspot function (with code 531 (COMAND APS))
- Voice control system function
- Navigation mode function
- Mobile phone system function
- Mobile phone system in rear function (with CODE 855 (Telephony in rear) or with CODE 856 (Business telephony in rear))
- Emergency call system function (with code 347 (Mercedes-Benz emergency call system), with code 348 (Emergency call/Assist system), with code 350 (eCall Europe emergency call system) or with code 351 (Emergency call system (HERMES)))
- Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) function (with CODE 498 (Japan version), dealer option)
- Speaker output function
The following applications can also be shown in the instrument cluster (A1): Audio, telephone, navigation.
The COMAND controller unit acts as a gateway. The COMAND controller unit routes the signals from the user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the MOST, thereby setting up the communications interface.
The COMAND controller unit communicates over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) with the following control units:
- Tuner unit (A90/4) (with CODE 536 (SIRIUS satellite radio), with CODE 537 (Digital radio (DAB)), with CODE 865 (TV tuner))
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with CODE 810 (Sound system) or CODE 811 (Advanced sound system))
- Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit (A26/18) (with CODE 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment system))
The COMAND controller unit is connected over Ethernet to the diagnostic connector (X11/4), and it receives updates this way for all the components connected to the MOST.
