Central Locking (CL (ZV)), Function - GF80.20-P-0005LF

Central locking (CL [ZV]), general 

The CL [ZV] electrically locks and unlocks the vehicle doors, the trunk lid and the tank cap.

The electronic ignition lock control unit is the master control unit of the CL. The electronic ignition lock control unit checks all function requests and decides when the CL is to be locked or unlocked. This depends, for example, on whether the driver door is open or closed.

On model 222 with code 887 (Valet Parking) or on model 217 the opening requests for the trunk lid are ignored by actuating the separate trunk lid lock switch. The front SAM control unit directly reads in the status of the separate trunk lid lock switch and sends this via interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit. The rear SAM control unit then blocks the opening requests from the other controls.

It is necessary to release the air before fueling the vehicle with the refueling safety detection switch (S62/20) in the driver door.

The CL comprises the following partial functions:

Function sequence for locking or unlocking CL 

The CL can be operated as follows:

Moreover, the following automatic functions are active under certain conditions:

IMPORTANT Model 217, 222

with code 896 (Vehicle access and drive authorization via mobile phone)

The CL can be operated with a authorized mobile phone instead of with the transmitter key.

Function sequence for operating CL with transmitter key 

The CL can be unlocked "globally" or "selectively" with the transmitter key.

If the unlock and lock buttons on the transmitter key are pressed simultaneously for t = 5 s, the unlocking mode toggles between "global" and "selective". The indicator lamp illuminates in the transmitter key.

Globally unlocking: 

When the unlock button on the transmitter key is pressed, all vehicle doors as well as the trunk lid or liftgate are unlocked. Opening the trunk lid is permitted.

Selectively unlocking: 

When the lock button the transmitter key is pressed once, only the driver door is unlocked and the tank cap is opened. When the unlock button on the transmitter key is pressed again, all vehicle doors as well as the trunk lid or liftgate are unlocked.

When the unlock or lock button the transmitter key is pressed, it transmits a radio signal via the rear window antenna and FM, AM, CL, DAB and KEYLESS-GO antenna amplifier to the KEYLESS-GO control unit. The KEYLESS-GO control unit sends this radio signal to the electronic ignition lock control unit via interior CAN.

The electronic ignition switch control unit checks the access authorization of the transmitter key. If access authorization is valid, the electronic ignition lock control unit lock or unlocks the CL.

Trunk lid release button (model 222 except CODE 881 (Remote trunk closing)) 

When actuating (without code 498 (Japanese version) once for a longer period of time (t = 0, 5 s), with code 498 (Japanese version) momentarily twice) the trunk lid open button on the transmitter key, it transmits a radio signal via the rear window antenna and FM, AM, ZV, DAB and KEYLESS-GO control unit to the KEYLESS-GO unit. The KEYLESS-GO control unit sends this radio signal to the electronic ignition lock control unit via interior CAN.

The electronic ignition switch control unit checks the access authorization of the transmitter key. If the access authorization is valid, the electronic ignition switch control unit sends request "Open trunk lid" to the rear SAM control unit via interior CAN. The rear SAM control unit then actuates the trunk lid lock motor in the trunk lid lock to unlock the trunk lid. The trunk lid is then opened mechanically by spring force as far as the upper stop.

Closing feedback: 

The user is given a visual and acoustic feedback signal when the CL is successfully locked or unlocked.

Acoustic lock feedback: 

As of 01.06.2017 (model 222) and/or 01.12.2017 (model 217):

The acoustic closing feedback function can be activated and deactivated over the control level in the head unit. The following options are available for navigating in the control menu:

The head unit generates the corresponding image data, transmits a switch-on request via the telematic CAN to the audio/COMAND display and transfers the image data via the HSVL line to the audio/COMAND display. Then the head unit sends the status of the acoustic locking feedback function via user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

Up to 31.05.2017 (model 222) and/or 30.11.2017 (model 217):

The acoustic closing feedback function can be activated or deactivated over the control level in the COMAND control unit. The function is selected via the Audio/COMAND control panel and is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display. The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the adjustment requests over the telematics CAN to the COMAND control unit. The COMAND control unit generates the corresponding image data, transmits a switch-on request via the telematics CAN to the Audio/COMAND display and transfers the image data via the HSVL line to the Audio/COMAND display. Then the COMAND control unit sends the status of the acoustic locking feedback function via user interfacer CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN to the front SAM control unit.

When the acoustic locking feedback function is activated, the front SAM control unit momentarily actuates the left horn and the right horn via the horn relay after successful locking. For this purpose the electronic ignition lock control unit sends the "Lock" request via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

The horns actuated once during locking.

If, when locking, a door, the trunk lid or the tank cap is open, an acoustic closing feedback is not output.

IMPORTANT Detailed information on detecting the status of the vehicle doors, the trunk lid as well as the fuel filler cap can be found in the chapter "Locking or unlocking CL".

Visual locking feedback: 

Visual locking feedback is output over the turn signals.

The electronic ignition lock transmits the request "Lock" or "Unlock" to the front SAM control unit via the interior CAN. The front SAM control unit then activates the hazard warning flasher function. All turn signals are actuated synchronously on the vehicle.

The turn signals are actuated three times when unlocking.

The turn signals are actuated three times when locking.

If, when locking, a door, the trunk lid or the tank cap is open, a visual closing feedback is not output.

IMPORTANT Detailed information on detecting the status of the vehicle doors, the trunk lid as well as the fuel filler cap can be found in the chapter "Locking or unlocking CL".

Function sequence for operating CL with front door central locking inside door handle switch 

The CL can be operated with the front door central locking inside door handle switches.

If one of the front door central locking switches in the corresponding front door central locking inside door handle switch is pressed, all vehicle door as well as the trunk lid are unlocked.

The left front door control unit directly reads in the status of the left front door central locking inside door handle switch and transmits it to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the interior CAN.

The right front door control unit reads in the status of the right front door central locking inside door handle switch directly and transmits it to the electronic ignition lock control unit over the interior CAN.

The electronic ignition lock control unit then locks or unlocks the CL.

When locking via the central locking closing switch in the corresponding front door central locking inside door handle switch, the tank cap remains always unlocked.

When the driver door is open, all doors excepts driver door and trunk lid are locked.

When the passenger door is open, the locking operation of the CL is inhibited by the left front door central locking inside door handle switch.

Opening a door from the inside when the CL is locked: 

Basically each door can be opened from the inside except on vehicles with code 885 (Extended theft protection)) or when the mechanical child safety lock on the rear doors (model 222 except code 494) USA version)) is activated. The corresponding door is opened at least mechanically.

If the vehicle is unlocked globally before locking, all vehicle doors as well as the trunk lid are unlocked. Opening the trunk lid is permitted. If the lock was locked selectively, only the corresponding door is unlocked.

Trunk lid release button (open) (model 222 except CODE 881 (Remote trunk closing)) 

It is also possible to unlock or open the trunk lid with the driver trunk lid control button (t ≥ 0, 5 s). The left front door control unit directly reads in the status of the trunk lid release button and transmits it to the rear SAM control unit via the interior CAN. The rear SAM control unit unlocks the trunk lid via the trunk lid/liftgate lock motor. The trunk lid is opened up to the upper stop by spring force.

Opening via trunk lid emergency opening switch (with code (494) USA version): 

Opening the trunk lid is possible via the trunk lid emergency opening switch regardless of the CL status. A person trapped in the trunk can open the trunk lid from inside. The trunk lid emergency switch is illuminated and is located on the inside of the trunk.

IMPORTANT The rear SAM control unit actuates the symbol illumination in the trunk lid emergency opening switch flashing at a frequency of f = 1 Hz. The symbol illumination lights up for t = 30 min when the trunk lid is open and for t = 60 min when the trunk lid is closed.

The rear SAM control unit directly reads in the status of the trunk lid emergency opening switch. When the trunk lid emergency opening switch is pressed, the rear SAM control unit actuates the trunk lid lock motor to unlock the truck lid. On model 222 except code 881 (Remote trunk closing), the trunk lid is opened by spring force to the upper stop.

Function sequence for remote vehicle unlocking or remote vehicle locking (with code 348 (Emergency call/assist system) or with code 05U (Remote Online) or with code 360 (HERMES UMTS) and code 11U (Remote Online) or with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) 

The CL can be unlocked with the remote door unlock function e.g. in the case that a transmitter key is locked in the vehicle and a second transmitter key is not present.

The CL can be locked with the remote door lock in the case that CL locking has been forgotten.

Both services first require legitimation of the vehicle owner by the service center. The request for remote CL lock or remote CL unlocking is transmitted by the emergency call system control unit (with code 348 (emergency call/assist system) or the telematic services communication module (with code 05U (Remote Online)) or the HERMES control unit (with code 360 (HERMES UMTS) and code 11U (Remote Online) or with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) to the electronic ignition lock control unit via diagnostic CAN.

Additional function requirements for automatically locking CL 

Function sequence for locking CL automatically 

The CL can be locked automatically depending on the vehicle speed or after expiration of a defined waiting time.

The CL locking function (depends on the vehicle speed) is activated by pressing the central locking close switch for t > 5 s and is deactivated by pressing the central locking open switch for t > 5 s. An acknowledgment tone is output via the instrument cluster speaker in the driver footwell. The left front door control unit directly reads in the status of the left front door central locking inside door handle switch and transmits it to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the interior CAN. The right front door control unit reads in the status of the right front door central locking inside door handle switch directly and transmits it to the electronic ignition lock control unit over the interior CAN.

As of 01.06.2017 (model 222) and/or 01.12.2017 (model 217):

Locking the CL depending on the vehicle speed, can be activated or deactivated via the control menu in the head unit. The following options are available for navigating in the control menu:

The head unit generates the corresponding image data, transmits a switch-on request via the telematic CAN to the audio/COMAND display and transfers the image data via the HSVL line to the audio/COMAND display. Then the head unit transmits the CL automatic locking function status to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the user interface CAN.

The electronic ignition lock control unit transmits the function status to the instrument cluster via the user interface CAN. The instrument cluster directly actuates the instrument cluster speaker in the driver footwell.

The CL acts as follows depending on the vehicle speed:

The instrument cluster sends the vehicle speed via user interface CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit. The electronic ignition lock control unit evaluates this information and activated locking of the CL. The CL can be unlocked by opening a door from the inside or via the central locking inside door handle switch.

When the vehicle is unlocked by actuating the inside door handle central locking switch, it remains unlocked even above the limit value for the vehicle speed. The vehicle is returned to the initial state when one of the doors is opened or c. 15 is switched on and off again.

If a door is opened while driving and then closed again and the vehicle speed is above the limit value for automatic locking, the door is locked again after it is closed.

After the CL has been unlocked with the transmitter key, a waiting time of t = 40 s starts. After expiration of this waiting time the CL is relocked automatically, if a door or the trunk is not opened previously or a circuit change is triggered. Visual or acoustic locking feedback is not output.

IMPORTANT The automatic relocking function activates the anti-theft alarm system (ATA).

Additional function requirement for emergency opening in event of crash 

Function sequence for emergency opening in event of crash 

The emergency opening function unlocks the doors in the event of a crash. In addition the tank cap is opened. The supplemental restraint system control unit sends the crash signal via user interface CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit and redundantly via a direct line to the front SAM control unit.

The front SAM control unit then generates a signal "Emergency opening" and transmits this signal via the interior CAN to the following control units:

After a waiting time of t = 10 s, the doors, trunk lid and fuel filler cap are unlocked. The exception here is a rear crash, when the doors, trunk lid and tank cap are unlocked immediately.

IMPORTANT The emergency opening function in event of a crash has priority over all other CL functions.

Function sequence for unlocking or locking CL 

The electronic ignition lock control unit evaluates the incoming request and sends the "Locking" or "Unlocking" request to the following control units via the interior CAN:

The left front door control unit locks or unlocks the left front door lock via the left front doors central locking motor.

The right front door control unit locks or unlocks the right front door lock via the left front door central locking motor.

On model 222 the left rear door control unit locks or unlocks the left rear door lock via the left rear door central locking motor.

On model 222 the right rear door control unit locks or unlocks the right rear door lock via the right rear door central locking motor.

On model 217.4 the SAM control unit unlocks or locks the glove compartment via the glove compartment central locking actuator motor.

Opening trunk lid via trunk lid external operation switch is enabled or disabled by the rear SAM control unit.

The status of the trunk lid external operation switch is read in directly by the rear SAM control unit.

The rear SAM control unit disables the opening request from the tank cap central locking actuator or enables it. If the tank cap is pressed (opening request), a signal is sent to the rear SAM control unit by the tank cap central locking actuator. The rear SAM control unit checks whether the opening request is permissible. If so, the rear SAM control unit actuates the electric motor in the tank cap central locking actuator and the locking hooks are released.

The socket for the charging cable is also locked/unlocked via the central locking to prevent a charging cable from being inserted/removed.

For closing feedback the status of the vehicle doors as well as the trunk lid (open or closed) is sensed over the following switches:

The left front door control unit reads in the status of the left front door main catch microswitch directly and sends it via interior CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit.

The right front door control unit reads in the status of the right front door main catch microswitch directly and sends it via interior CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit.

On model 222 the left rear door control unit reads in the status of the left rear door main catch microswitch directly and sends it via interior CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit.

On model 222 the right rear door control unit reads in the status of the right rear door main catch microswitch directly and sends it via interior CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit.

The rear SAM control unit directly reads in the status of the trunk lid lock main catch switch or the trunk lid central locking actuator and transmits it to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the interior CAN.

IMPORTANT If the CL is unlocked with the transmitter key, although the driver door is not completely closed, the driver door remains unlocked. On vehicles with code (889) KEYLESS-GO the entire vehicle remains unlocked. On model 222 with code 883 (Power closing) or model 217 as of 01.06.2014 the CL is already locked when power closing is started, i. e. if the door lock is engaged in the first catch. Detailed information on power closing is described in chapter "Power closing".

with code 551 (Anti-theft warning system)

If the driver door in the locked vehicle is opened mechanically with the emergency key, the anti-theft alarm system (ATA) triggers an alarm.

Play protection: 

Each manually actuated actuation is counted by the electronic ignition lock control unit. Starting at a value of 40, no further manually actuated requests for the CL are executed. The counter status is deducted by one every t = 7 s. A manually actuated request is executed only after the value drops below 40 again.

Function sequence for additional door lock (with code 885 (Extended theft protection)): 

When all vehicle doors are closed and the interior protection (with code 882 (Interior monitoring) is activated, the connection between the inside door handle and door lock is mechanically decoupled when the locking the CL, so that it is no longer possible to open a door from inside. This prevents breaking in into the vehicle by smashing in a window and opening a door from inside.

The electronic ignition lock control unit also transmits the additional door lock request via the interior CAN to the following control units when locking via the central locking:

The left front door control unit actuates the left front door additional door lock actuator motor.

The right front door control unit actuates the right front door additional door lock actuator motor.

On model 222 the left rear door control unit directly actuates the left rear door additional door lock actuator motor.

On model 222 the right rear door control unit directly actuates the right rear door additional door lock actuator motor.

Function sequence for power closing (model 222 with code 883 (Power closing), model 217) 

The power closing feature allows the door to be closed with a minimum of noise and low amount of force. If the door lock is pressed in the safety catch (detected by the respective safety catch microswitch), the closing procedure begins. Upon reaching the main catch (detected by the main catch microswitch), the closing procedure ends and the power closing actuator motor is actuated briefly in the opposite direction to relieve the mechanical components. When opening the door, the power closing actuator motor is actuated in the opposite direction until the start position is reached. The start position is reached if the power closing actuator motor microswitch is operated. The closing procedure can be interrupted by pulling on the external operation or inside door handle lever.

The operation of the inside door handle lever is recorded by the inside door handle microswitch. Pulling on the door handle is recorded by the external operation microswitch. The front door control unit or rear door control unit (on model 222) directly reads in the signals of all microswitches and directly actuates the power closing actuator motors accordingly.

IMPORTANT If the door is closed quickly so that the main catch is already reached without operation of the power closing, the power closing starts anyway.

Play protection: 

Each closing procedure is incremented in the corresponding front door control unit or rear door control unit (on model 222). The maximum number of closing procedures is 20 within t = 280 s. After reaching this value, additional closing procedures are not accomplished. The counter status is deducted by one every t = 14 s. Closing resumes after the value decreases to less than 20.
