Function requirements, general

Engine running.

Engine sound

The engine sound function simulates the sound of an engine and exhaust system, as this cannot be heard completely in its original form within the vehicle interior. Here, the driving condition and the engine load are taken into consideration. The simulated sound is output via the speaker system, even when no audio source is active. When audio output is active, the emitted tones are expanded with the simulated sound.

The driving condition is defined on the basis of the following signals, powertrain control unit sends over the powertrain CAN to the engine sound control unit, the sound system amplifier control unit (Model 205 as of Model year 2019, Model 253 as of Model year 2020 with code 810 (Sound system)), to the Midline sound system amplifier control unit (Model 205 as of Model year 2019 with code 853 ("Midline" sound system)) or to the head unit (Model 253 as of Model year 2020 except code 810 (Sound system)):

Transmission mode selection (transmission 722, 725)
Engaged gear range (transmission 722, 725)
Vehicle speed
Engine torque

The engine load is defined on the basis of the following signals, which the ME-SFI [ME] control unit sends over the powertrain CAN to the engine sound control unit, to the sound system amplifier control unit (Model 205 as of Model year 2019, Model 253 as of Model year 2020 with code 810 (Sound system)), to the Midline sound system amplifier control unit (Model 205 as of Model year 2019 with code 853 ("Midline" sound system)) or to the head unit (Model 253 as of Model year 2020 except code 810 (Sound system)):

Engine running status
Engine speed

The engine sound control unit evaluates all incoming information and generates the audio signals.

Model 205 up to Model year 2019, Model 253 up to Model year 2020 Depending on the vehicle equipment, the engine sound control unit actuates the speaker system directly or via the sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system)).

Depending on the vehicle equipment, the engine sound control unit, the sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system)) or the Midline sound system amplifier control unit (with code 853 ("Midline" sound system)) actuates the speaker system directly.
