Brake test on roller brake test stand
DANGER Risk of death  caused by limbs being caught or crushed by rotating parts when performing tests on the brake test stand Never leave the vehicle unattended on the rollers except in an emergency. Ensure that no one is under the vehicle or near rotating parts during testing. In case of emergency, use the EMERGENCY OFF switch to shut down test stand. AS42.00-Z-0001-01A
1.1 Set hydraulic valve or electrical selection switch in engine compartment to "TEST" position. Model 124.226/230/290/330/333/393
IMPORTANT Ignition is switched off.

1.2 Switch on dynamometer test using steering wheel buttons. Model 197
REFER TO TESTING & REPAIR   Model 197.3/4
NOTES Do not switch off ESP® using the ESP® Sport OFF button on the center console. Otherwise, an active intervention by the ESP® brake system may lead to measurement errors.

2 Perform gear ratio change from "High" to "Low". Model 164, 166
with code 430 (Offroad package) Model 463
as of model year 2019
with code ZB4 (Off-Road package)
IMPORTANT To do so, press the "Low Range" button on the lower control panel and drive for 20 to 50 meters to shift from the "High" on-road ratio into the "Low" step-down ratio. If "Sport" transmission mode has been activated, it is not possible to shift to the "Low" step-down ratio.

3 Move vehicle with front axle onto roller brake test stand.
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS     WS42.00-P-0006B
4 Move automatic transmission to selector lever position "N" or shift manual transmission to neutral.
5 Determine and document the braking characteristics and brake values of the front axle. NOTES On all-wheel drive vehicles, the speed of the roller brake test stand rollers may be max. 5 km/h and may not last for longer than 15 s per test of one axle.
Between the tests, a waiting period of at least 15 s must be observed, during which the axle may not be driven by the roller brake test stand rollers.
The drive train and brake system can otherwise be damaged.
IMPORTANT Press brake pedal uniformly. Document maximum values before wheels lock.

6 Move rear axle of vehicle into roller brake test stand.
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS     WS42.00-P-0006B
7 Move automatic transmission to selector lever position "N" or shift manual transmission to neutral.
8 Determine and document braking characteristics and brake values of rear axle.

9.1 Determine and document braking response, brake values and actuating travel of parking brake. Vehicles with mechanically actuated parking brake.
IMPORTANT Operate parking brake uniformly. Document the number of notches and the maximum values prior to the wheels locking up.

9.2 Determine and document braking characteristics and brake values for electric parking brake. Model 197, 216, 221
Vehicles with electrically-operated parking brake.
Before operating the electric parking brake, the rear-axle complete wheels must be driven by the roller brake test stand until the vehicle has detected the roller brake test stand so that application of the brake pads is then slowed down.
Otherwise damage may occur.
NOTES Briefly press switch of electric parking brake once, do not press and hold.
Otherwise damage will occur.
IMPORTANT Document maximum values before wheels lock.

9.3 Determine and document braking characteristics and brake values for electric parking brake. Model 117, 118, 156, 166, 167, 172, 176, 177, 190, 205, 213, 217, 222, 231, 238, 242, 246, 247, 253, 257, 290, 292, 293
Model 463 as of model year 2019
Vehicles with electrically-operated parking brake.
NOTES On all-wheel drive vehicles, the speed of the roller brake test stand rollers my be max. 5 km/h and may not last for longer than 15 s per test of one axle.
Between the tests, a waiting period of at least 15 s must be observed, during which the axle may not be driven by the roller brake test stand rollers.
Before operating the electric parking brake, the rear-axle complete wheels must be driven by the roller brake test stand until the vehicle has detected the roller brake test stand so that application of the brake pads is then slowed down.
Otherwise damage may occur.
IMPORTANT The electric parking brake brakes briefly and then changes to the roller brake test stand mode.
  • After 3 s press the switch of the electric parking brake again briefly, the electric parking brake brakes with greater brake power.
  • If necessary, after 3 s briefly press the switch of the electric parking brake a 3rd and a 4th time until the wheels lock up.

IMPORTANT Document maximum values before wheels lock.

10 Release parking brake and drive vehicle out of roller brake test stand.
11 Evaluate braking characteristics and documented brake values of service brake. Notes on the evaluating and interpreting brake tests on test stands If there are brake value fluctuations or a pulsating brake pedal or if the difference in the braking effect of the service brake at the wheels of one axle is more than 25 % of the highest value,

determine cause and correct.
IMPORTANT After obtaining special order.
If locking limit is not reached:

Check whether the brake values still comply with the legal regulations.
IMPORTANT After obtaining special order.
IMPORTANT The stated deviation applies for the Federal Republic of Germany; differently phrased country-specific regulations must be observed accordingly.
If the brake values do not meet legal requirements,

determine cause and correct.
