Function requirements, general

Exterior lights, general

The exterior lights control all the safety and comfort-relevant functions of the front, side and rear lamps on the vehicle.

Several functions of the exterior lights are only restrictedly available if transport, production, roller or trade fair mode has been activated or if a testing function has been activated (e.g. Technical Inspection Association check).

A differentiation is made between the following versions of the front lamp units in accordance with the vehicle equipment:

The exterior lights contain the following functions:

Further functions are described in separate documents:

Function sequence for thermal management of front lamp unit

The front lamp units have temperature sensors that are used to sense the heat development in the area of the actuated LEDs. If the LEDs or plastic housings of the front lamp units threaten to overheat as a consequence of high outside temperatures or high actuation currents, the actuation currents of the LEDs are reduced, thereby minimizing heat development.

For active ventilation, the following additional components are integrated into the front lamp units:

The fan motors are actuated as soon as the low beams or the high beams are switched on. The active ventilation through actuation of the fan motors is used simultaneously for defrosting and de-icing the front lamp units at low outside temperatures.

Function sequence for switching off the exterior lights

By switching off the exterior lights, the on-board electrical system load by the active standing or parking lights actuation is reduced.

IMPORTANT Discharge of the on-board electrical system battery (G1) is prevented.

The low beams may be switched on because of the automatic driving lights or manually using the exterior lights switch. It is automatically deactivated with circuit 15 OFF if the engine was switched off beforehand and the vehicle is at a standstill. The standing lights may be switched on because of the manually switched on low beams, the auto on/off driving lights, the daytime running lights (only in vehicles with CODE 498 (Japan version)) or manually via the exterior lights switch.

If the driver door is opened with terminal 15C ON or if the driver door is closed when terminal 15C is switched off, the standing light is switched off.

As soon as the energy management system determines that the starting capability of the engine is impaired, the standing lights are switched off provided that they were manually activated (exterior lights switch in standing lights or parking lights position).

IMPORTANT If the "Ambient illumination" function has been activated via the head unit, it automatically switches itself on when the engine is turned off. The standing light remains on for the configured period from the point at which the last door or the trunk was closed.
