Standing lamp actuation function sequence
Turning the exterior lights switch (S1) to the standing lights position requests actuation of the standing lights.
The front SAM control unit (N10/6) reads in the status of the exterior lights switch directly and sends the "Standing lights ON" request over the interior CAN (CAN B) to the rear SAM control unit (N10/8) and additionally over the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) and periphery CAN (CAN PER) to the left headlamp control unit (E1n9) and the right headlamp control unit (E2n9).
In vehicles with CODE 550 (Trailer hitch), the front SAM control unit transmits the "Standing lights ON" request via the interior CAN to the trailer recognition control unit (N28/1).
At the same time, the front SAM control unit sends the "Switch on standing light indicator lamp" request over the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the instrument cluster (A1), which then switches on the standing light indicator lamp.
The standing lights control message is switched off with circuit 15R OFF and after a defined period if the vehicle has been locked from the outside, despite the function being active.
The headlamp control units actuate the following components directly:
- Left front lamp unit (E1):
- Left position light and daytime running light (E1e27)
- Left front side marker light (E1e6) (with CODE 460 (Canada version) or CODE 494 (USA version))
- Right front lamp unit (E2):
- Right position light and daytime running light (E2e27)
- Right front side marker light (E2e6) (with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))

- Left license plate lamp (E19/1)
- Right license plate lamp (E19/2)
The tail lights and license plate lamps are dimmed when switched on and off.
On vehicles with CODE 550 (Trailer hitch), the trailer recognition control unit actuates the following components of the exterior lights on the trailer via the trailer socket (X58):
- Parking and taillights
- License plate lights
Additional function requirements for standing lights warning
- Standing lights ON
- Driver door OPEN
- Circuit 15C OFF
Function sequence for standing light warning
The logic for requesting the standing lights warning function is stored in the front SAM control unit.
The left front door control unit (N69/1) sends the status of the driver door (open or closed) and the electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit receives this information, uses it to generate the request to issue the standing lights warning function, and transmits the "Warning tone ON" and "Instrument cluster message ON" requests via the interior CAN, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.
The instrument cluster then actuates the instrument cluster speaker (H4/61) directly. The message "Switch off lights" is shown on the instrument cluster.
Additional function requirements for parking lights actuation
- Circuit 15R OFF
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 to the front SAM control unit via the interior CAN.
Parking lights actuation function sequence
By turning the exterior lights switch to the left parking lights position or the right parking lights position, the parking lights actuation is requested for the corresponding side of vehicle.
The front SAM control unit reads in the status of the exterior lighting switch directly and sends the "parking lights ON" request over the interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit and additionally over the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and the peripherals CAN to the respective headlamp control unit.
On vehicles with CODE 550 (Trailer hitch), the front SAM control unit also sends the "Parking lights ON" request via interior CAN to the trailer recognition control unit.
Left parking light:
The left headlamp control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Left position light and daytime running light
- Left front side marker light (with CODE 460 (Canada version) or CODE 494 (USA version))
The rear SAM control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Left tail light and parking light (except code 460 (Canada version) and except code 494 (USA version))
- Left rear side marker light (model 290)
- Outer left turn signal light, brake light and tail light (model 257 with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))
- Inner left turn signal light, brake light and tail light (model 257 with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))
- Left brake light, tail light and parking light (model 290 with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))
- Inner left tail light (model 257)
The tail lights are dimmed when switched on and off.
In vehicles with code 550 (Trailer hitch), the trailer recognition control unit actuates the left taillight via the trailer socket.
Right parking light:
The right headlamp control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Right position light and daytime running light
- Right front side marker light (with CODE 460 (Canada version) or CODE 494 (USA version))
The rear SAM control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Right tail light and parking light (except code 460 (Canada version) and except code 494 (USA version))
- Right rear side marker light (model 290)
- Outer right turn signal light, brake light and tail light (model 257 with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))
- Inner right turn signal light, brake light and tail light (model 257 with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))
- Right brake light, tail light and parking light (model 290 with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))
- Inner right tail light (model 257)
The tail lights are dimmed when switched on and off.
In vehicles with code 550 (Trailer hitch), the trailer recognition control unit actuates the right taillight via the trailer socket.
If the interior CAN is in "bus idle", the parking lights actuation is stored in all the control units involved until deactivation is requested by the front SAM control unit.
Additional function requirements for driving lights warning (except code 460 (Canada version))
- Exterior lights switch in standing lights position or parking lights position
- Rain/light sensor with additional functions (B38/2) detects darkness
- Vehicle speed v > 15 km/h
Function sequence for driving lights warning (except code 460 (Canada version))
The logic for requesting the driving lights warning function is stored in the front SAM control unit.
The front SAM control unit reads in the status of the exterior lights switch directly.
The light sensor (B38/2b2) in the rain/light sensor with additional functions detects the ambient brightness. The rain/light sensor with additional functions reads in the signals of the light sensor directly, evaluates them and transmits the "Low beams ON" request via the rain/light sensor LIN (LIN B16) to the front SAM control unit when it is dark.
The Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) transmits the vehicle speed via the chassis FlexRay (flex E), the electronic ignition lock control unit and the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.
The front SAM control unit receives this information, uses it to generate the request to issue the driving lights warning function, and it transmits the "Warning tone ON" and "Instrument cluster message ON" requests via the interior CAN, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.
The instrument cluster then actuates the instrument cluster speaker directly. "Switch on driving lights" message appears on the instrument cluster.
