REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Remove center and front engine compartment lining   AR61.20-P-1105LF
2 Detach corresponding front complete wheel   AR40.10-P-1102A
3 Unhook electrical line (1) of front rpm sensor from cable duct (2) Model 217
except code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)

4 Detach cable duct (2) and place to one side Model 217
except code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)

5 Detach tie rod (3) from steering knuckle (4) NOTES
The ball head must be counterheld and an impact wrench/driver must not be used.
Otherwise the ball head or steering knuckle (4 will be damaged.
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION nut, tie rod to steering knuckle Nut, tie rod to steering knuckle *BA46.40-P-1001-01M 
6 Unscrew nut (5) from strut rod (6) on steering knuckle (4) NOTES
The ball head must be counterheld and an impact wrench/driver must not be used.
Otherwise the ball head or steering knuckle (4 will be damaged.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Tighten nut (5) using box wrench bit 24 mm (01) SPECIAL TOOL and four-point drive (02) SPECIAL TOOL .
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, strut rod to steering knuckle *BA33.20-P-1003-01T 
7 Remove bolts (8) and detach bracket (9) with circulation pump and switchover valve, and place to one side Model 217 with engine 157, 278
Model 222 with engine 157, 276, 278, 642
If installed and only when removing the right strut rod (6).
IMPORTANT Do not detach coolant hoses.
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Engine 642 Bracket securing coolant pump/switchover valve to radiator support *BA20.10-P-1005-01S 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Engine 276 Bolt/nut, bracket for coolant pump/switchover valve to radiator support *BA20.10-P-1011-01AA 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Engine 157, 278 Bolt/nut, bracket for coolant pump/switchover valve to radiator support *BA20.10-P-1006-01W 
8 Detach strut rod (6) from front axle carrier (7) and remove strut rod (6) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, strut rod to front axle carrier *BA33.20-P-1004-01T 
INSPECT Check     
9 Check dust boot and ball head of strut rod (6) If dust boot or ball head is damaged

Replace strut rod (6)
 
10 Check condition and variant of elastomer bearing in strut rod (6) and whether elastomer bearing is damaged IMPORTANT The variants of the elastomer bearings are shown in the reference document.
In the event of damage, if a neutral (genuine) elastomer bearing is installed

Replace strut rod (6)
In the event of damage, if an elastomer bearing is installed for caster correction

Press out/in elastomer bearing of strut rod (6)
