Remove/Check/Install Front Axle Brake Pads - AR42.10-P-1610LFH

Model 222 with code Z07 (B7 armoring on special protection version)

Deburr repair panels.

CAUTION Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Switch off ignition and store transmitter key outside of transmitter range (min. 2 m).    
2 Remove cover above brake fluid expansion reservoir.    
3 Clean area around cap on brake fluid expansion reservoir. Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
4 Unscrew cap on brake fluid expansion reservoir and suction off some brake fluid. IMPORTANT This prevents the expansion reservoir overflowing when the brake piston is pushed back.  
5 Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.   AR40.10-P-1102A
6 Release and disconnect electrical connector of right front brake wear sensor (S10/2). If the brakepads (6) on the right side of the vehicle are removed.  
7 Remove screw (2) and remove electrical connector coupling (1) from brake caliper (3). If the brakepads (6) on the right side of the vehicle are removed.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 222.176/182/184/185/976/982/984/985 with code Z07 (B7 armoring on special protection version) Bolt, brake wear sensor to brake caliper *BA42.10-P-1004-10V 
8 Hammer out retaining pins (4) with punch. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Drive in retaining pins (4) up to the end stop.
Make sure that the retaining spring (7) is seated correctly.
 
9 Remove screws (5), remove brake caliper (3) from wheel carrier and secure brake caliper (3) with suitable means against falling down. TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 222.176/182/184/185/976/982/984/985 with code Z07 (B7 armoring on special protection version) Bolt, brake caliper to steering knuckle *BA42.10-P-1001-10V 
10 Remove brakepads (6) forwards from brake caliper (3). INSTALLATION NOTES Do not apply brake paste or lubricants to the brakepads (6) and brake calipers (3).
Otherwise malfunctions will occur.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install only sets of brakepads (6) approved by Mercedes-Benz. Make sure that the brakepads (6) are installed at the correct position.
IMPORTANT Press out seized brakepads (6) using a lever.
 
    SPECIAL TOOL Lever Fig 1
11 Remove retaining spring (7) from brake caliper (3) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Make sure that the retaining spring (7) is seated correctly.  
INSPECT Check     
12 Check brakepads (6).    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4252HA
    If wear or damage is detected,

Replace brake pads (6).
AR42.10-P-0220LF 
13 Check brake disks (8).    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Model 222 with code Z07 (B7 armoring on special protection version) except code B07 (AMG - ceramic brake system) AP42.10-P-4258HA
    If wear or damage is detected,

replace brake disks (8).
 
14 Check brake caliper (3) and dust boots of brake pistons. If a leakage or any damage is detected,

Replace brake caliper (3).

15 Press back brake piston using pusher tool. IMPORTANT Secure remaining brake pistons to prevent them slipping out.

If one or several brake pistons are sluggish.

    Replace brake caliper (3). AR42.10-P-0070LF 
CLEAN Clean     
16 Clean contact surfaces of brakepads (6) on brake caliper (3). NOTES Do not use sharp-edged or pointed objects. Otherwise, damage to the dust boots will occur.  
    Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
17 Pull right front brake wear sensor (S10/2) out of backing plate of brakepad (6). If the brakepads (6) are replaced or the right front brake wear sensor (S10/2) is replaced.  
18 Install in the reverse order.    
  Initial startup     
DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A
19 Depress brake pedal several times until the brakepads (6) make contact with brake disks (8). IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.  
INSPECT Check     
20 Check fluid level in expansion reservoir for brake fluid.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4210HA
21 Perform brake test on test stand.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.00-P-4290BA
