Function requirements for mobile phone system, general

- Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone or telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is in the vehicle and authorized on the head unit.
- The mobile phone supports the hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or higher.
- No smartphone integrated in vehicle via CarPlay.
If a smartphone is integrated in the vehicle using Android Auto, telephone calls can only be made via the connected smartphone.

Mobile telephone system, general
A differentiation is made between the following equipment and utilization variants in the mobile phone system:
- Basic telephony
- Telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package)
- Telephony with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)

The mobile phone cradle control unit is only used for near-field communication (NFC) and for the wireless charging in accordance with the Qi standard.

The rear passenger compartment mobile phone cradle control unit (N123/10) is only used for wireless charging in accordance with the Qi standard.
A mobile phone authorized on the head unit can also be used as a playback device as part of Bluetooth® audio.
The mobile phone system is described here using basic telephony as an example. The special considerations for telephony with special equipment are summarized at the end of this document.
The mobile phone system includes the following areas:
- Bluetooth®

- Using the phone in hands-free mode

Individual telephone functions can also be used via the instrument cluster. The head unit sends the corresponding data over the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.
Irrespective of the mobile phone system, a mobile phone can be charged through the following components in the vehicle:
- By cable:
- Multimedia connection unit
- Front center console USB port (with code 897 (Wireless mobile phone charging))

Bluetooth®
Using Bluetooth®, it is possible to quickly and easily connect mobile terminals that support the corresponding profiles to the mobile phone system. Bluetooth® is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth® devices (e.g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth®, in addition to the wide availability of Bluetooth® devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth® devices. The extremely high level of data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of this type of Bluetooth® network are what makes the use of Bluetooth® in the vehicle interesting. The head unit can integrate mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy over the mobile phone's Bluetooth® interface and the Bluetooth® antenna. The head unit automatically searches for the last two connected mobile phones and connects to the mobile phone that responds first.
If the mobile phone is not automatically connected to the head unit or if the head unit is to be establish a connection to another mobile phone, then the connection must be made manually over the telephone base function. Authorized telephones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized telephones must be authorized first. Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized at the same time. If a new telephone is to be authorized when 15 telephones are already authorized, the user is prompted to delete one of the existing data records. Detailed information on authorization is available in the respective operator's manual.
Switch on/off characteristics
A mobile phone operated via Bluetooth® is switched on and off on the mobile phone itself. The SIM PIN prompt (subscriber identification module, personal identification number), if configured on the mobile phone and if it is transmitting the status, occurs on the mobile phone only and the PIN has to be entered into the mobile phone. After logging into the mobile telephone network provider's network, the mobile telephone network provider and the signal level are displayed in the status bar of the Audio/COMAND display.
The switch-off signal via the mobile phone button is processed internally in the mobile phone. If the rechargeable battery of the mobile phone is empty, the mobile phone is also switched off. This process also runs internally in the mobile phone. The "Ready for Bluetooth® telephony" message appears on the Audio/COMAND display and the system automatically searches again for the mobile phones used most recently.
The head unit can be switched on and off using the head unit button ON (model 257) or the volume control button (model 290) on the right lower control panel. On model 257 the head unit button operation signal is sent over the following route:

Call signal
The head unit receives the call signal over the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone. The head unit sends the ringing tone to the following components:
- Speaker system (model 257 (except 257.361) except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System))
- Midline sound system amplifier control unit, over MOST (model 257.361, model 290 except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System))
- Sound system amplifier control unit, over MOST (with code 810 (Sound system))
- Advanced Sound System amplifier control unit, over MOST (with code 811 (Advanced Sound System))
If the mobile phone supports "In-band ringing", the mobile phone ring tone is emitted over the speakers, otherwise the head unit's default ringing sound is used.
The head unit mutes the currently active audio source (e.g. during radio mode) (mute function) and displays the caller ID over the HSVL line on the Audio/COMAND display.
Establish, end, accept, reject or toggle call
The telephone function is used through the head unit. The head unit generates the display messages and sends them over an HSVL line to the Audio/COMAND display. Telephone numbers can be entered using a character bar on the Audio/COMAND display or they can be searched for and selected in call lists or in the address book. The mobile phone system can be operated using the following components:
- Mobile phone
- Upper control panel control unit
- Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only))
- Touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only) or with code 448 (Touchpad))
- Head unit multifunction steering wheel button group
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with code 531 (COMAND APS))
Toggle: If during a telephone call another incoming call is received or another telephone connection is set up, then the new call is activated and the existing one put on hold. It is then possible to switch (toggle) between the active call and the one on hold.
Conference connection: If the mobile phone supports the function, it is possible - after several calls have been connected - to switch, not only between the calls, as for toggling, but to have all the calls active at the same time in a conference connection.

The mobile phone control is processed internally, status changes are received by the head unit over the Bluetooth® antenna.

The Telephone menu can be called up on the upper control panel control unit. The control signal is transferred as follows:

The Audio/COMAND controller is used to call up and activate the functions in the Telephone menu. The "Back" button supports navigation in the menus.

The head unit receives the control signals from the touchpad via the telematics CAN.

Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with code 531 (COMAND APS))
The voice control system is activated on the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group. When a call is being connected or a call being accepted, the voice control system is automatically switched off.

Head unit
When the voice control system is active, the voice commands are recorded by the driver hands-free system microphone and forwarded via a direct line to the head unit. If necessary, the head unit sends the control signals over the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone.
The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".
Using the phone in hands-free mode
The voice input in the hands-free mode is recorded by the driver hands-free system microphone and the front passenger hands-free system microphone, and forwarded to the head unit. The head unit sends the signals over the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone. The head unit receives incoming voice signals over the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone and sends them to the following components:
- Speaker system (model 257 (except 257.361) except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System))
- Midline sound system amplifier control unit, over MOST (model 257.361, model 290 except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System))
- Sound system amplifier control unit, over MOST (with code 810 (Sound system))

The volume of the voice outputs can be adjusted using the volume adjustment button on the right lower control panel or using the volume adjustment switch of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group.

Address book
The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). The address book contains the address entries stored in the head unit. Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book. Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries.
The address data of external devices (e.g. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), notebook) or storage media (e.g. SD card (Secure Digital), USB (Universal Serial Bus) memory) can be saved in the address book and then be permanently available as an address entry. The address data can be sent to the address book via the following system components:
- Bluetooth® interface of mobile phone and the Bluetooth® antenna
- SD card slot on multimedia connection unit
- USB connector 1 or USB connector 2 of multimedia connection unit
- Front center console USB port (with code 896 (Vehicle access and drive authorization over mobile phone), code 897 (Wireless mobile phone charging) or code 899 (Multifunction telephony))
- Rear passenger compartment multimedia connection (model 290 with code 531 (COMAND APS))
The head unit receives address data transferred via Bluetooth® from the Bluetooth antenna®. The address data of the multimedia connection unit, front center console USB port or the rear passenger compartment multimedia connection are received by the head unit over a direct line.
Address book entries can contain the following information among other things:
- Last name, first name and company
- "Yomigana field" (for phonetic notation entry of name in the "Katakana" syllabary) (with code 498 (Japan version))
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (several telephone numbers can be saved under one address entry with different symbols)
- Geo position
The call can be established via the voice control system for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field".
Short Message Service (SMS) (except code 498 (Japan version))
The user can receive, send and manage SMS messages (e.g. read or delete them). For this purpose, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as all new SMS messages are forwarded to the head unit. The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receive
- Read via the display of the mobile phone and via the Audio/COMAND display
- Read out (English or German)
- Write and send
- Delete
- Mail inbox list of the most recent SMS messages, sorted by date (choice of displaying either the sender or the start of the text for each SMS)
The SMS function with basic telephony requires the Message Access Profile (MAP) to be supported. Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.
As soon as the head unit is connected to the mobile phone, it starts to receive the SMS messages already stored on the mobile phone and any new incoming SMS messages via the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone. The functions for writing, sending and managing SMS messages are activated through the basic telephone function.
The head unit shows the telephone menu via the HSVL line on the Audio/COMAND display. When the SMS is being read out, the head unit sends the audio signals to the following components:
- Speaker system (model 257 (except 257.361) except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System))
- Midline sound system amplifier control unit, over MOST (model 257.361, model 290 except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System))
- Sound system amplifier control unit, over MOST (with code 810 (Sound system))
- Advanced Sound System amplifier control unit, over MOST (with code 811 (Advanced Sound System))
Telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package) or with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)
Telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package) and telephony with code 899 (Multifunction telephony) can be used individually or in combination. If both items of equipment are present, the following connection priorities apply:
- Priority 1: There is a SIM card in the telephone control unit or the telephone control unit is connected with a mobile phone via SIM Access Profile.
- Priority 2: A mobile phone is placed on the mobile phone cradle control unit and is logged in via Near Field Communication.
- Priority 3: A mobile phone is in the Bluetooth® signal range.
The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by a wake-up pulse when the head unit is switched on. The mobile phone signals are sent and received over the left telephone antenna or right telephone antenna.
The mobile phone system supports the Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile radio standard.
The function is divided into the following subfunctions:
- Telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package)
- Telephony with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)

When telephony is used for the first time in the vehicle, the user is asked via a pop-up window on the Audio/COMAND display whether he wants to use the head unit's basic telephony or telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package).

With code 899 (Multifunction telephony), the telephone control unit actuates the telephone antenna changeover switch via a direct line.
With code 503 (Pre-installation for Remote Parking Pilot) or with code B24 (Remote control for stationary heater), the head unit actuates the telephone and Remote Parking Pilot/stationary heater antenna changeover switch over a direct line.
For phone calls, the telephone control unit communicates via various Bluetooth® profile with the head unit. The head unit sends and receives the Bluetooth® signals via the Bluetooth® antenna.
The telephone control unit supports the SIM Access Profile (SAP), the Hands-Free Profile (HFP), the Message Access Profile (MAP), the Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP) and the Serial Port Profile (SPP).
In the case of a data connection, the telephone control unit communicates via WLAN with the head unit. The head unit sends and receives the WLAN signals via the WLAN antenna.
Telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package) has the following properties:
- Switch-on behavior (with code 380 (Car telephony package))
- PIN prompt (with code 380 (Car telephony package))
- Use of telephone control unit (with code 380 (Car telephony package))

Switch-on behavior (with code 380 (Car telephony package))
The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by a wake-up pulse when the head unit is switched on. The head unit transmits the signal via the telematics CAN to the telephone control unit.
PIN prompt (with code 380 (Car telephony package))
A prompt for the PIN is shown after switching on the mobile phone if the SIM card is configured for this. The PIN prompt is shown by the head unit over HSVL line on the Audio/COMAND display. The PIN can be entered using the head unit controls. The PIN of a connected telephone or the SIM card can be stored in the telephone control unit so that it does not need to be entered again when switching on.
Use of telephone control unit (with code 380 (Car telephony package))
The telephone control unit can be used for telephony in two different ways:
- With the SIM card inserted, the telephone control unit is a fully functional communication module.
- The telephone control unit can use the SIM card of a mobile phone carried in the vehicle if the mobile phone supports the SIM Access Profile. The telephone control unit receives the required configuration data of the SIM card via Bluetooth® from the mobile phone.
Mobile phones that are to be used for telephony with the telephone control unit, including integrated telephone module and antenna connection, must be authorized once in the telephone control unit. During an active telephone call on the mobile phone, a SAP connection cannot be established.
In total, up to 14 mobile phones and one SIM card can be authorized in the telephone control unit. After switching on the head unit, the telephone control unit automatically searches for all authorized mobile phones. The first to respond to the request is connected. If a SIM card is inserted into the telephone control unit although a mobile phone is already connected, the inserted SIM card is used and connected for the mobile phone system at the telephony control unit. It is still used for telephony even when the head unit is subsequently switched on.
If an existing connection with a mobile phone is to be replaced with another mobile phone, the existing connection must first be separated and the intended mobile phone manually connected by selecting it in the device list.
The telephone control unit is Internet-capable if the mobile phone contract that is used has a data option.
A ring tone can be selected from a list of ring tones for each SIM card, in the mobile phone or the telephone control unit.
Restrictions on mobile phone (with code 380 (Car telephony package))
As long as the mobile phone for telephony is connected to the telephone control unit via the SIM Access Profile, the telephony function on the mobile phone is rejected and the Internet connection is interrupted. No mail or WhatsApp messages can therefore be received either. The mobile phone is in sleep mode and is offline.
If e.g. a status update for all messages on the mobile phone is desired, the user can wake the mobile phone, connect to the hotspot of the head unit via WLAN and establish an Internet connection via the head unit.
Additional function requirements: Combination mode (with code 380 (Car telephony package))
- Combination mode is activated.
- The mobile phone is not connected to the telephone control unit via the SIM Access Profile but via the hands-free profile (HFP).
- A SIM card is inserted in the telephone control unit.
When combination mode is activated, a Bluetooth® connection to the combined mobile phone is established before the telephone control unit connects via the inserted SIM card.
Combination mode (with code 380 (Car telephony package))
When combination mode is activated, the mobile phone system supports the following functions:
- The contact data from the logged-in mobile phone are transferred via Bluetooth®.
- If both SIM cards are called simultaneously, the SIM card in the telephone control unit is used for telephony. The call on the mobile phone is not shown on the Audio/COMAND display, and is transmitted as a missed call to the telephone control unit via Bluetooth® on renewed connection.
- If only the mobile phone is called, the call can be accepted using the mobile phone system.
Telephony with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)
For communication via the antenna connection (and for charging), the mobile phone is placed into the mobile phone cradle control unit in the center console. The mobile phone cradle control unit forwards the switch-on signal from the head unit inductively to the mobile phone.
If the mobile phone does not support the Qi standard for wireless charging, it can be connected to the front center console USB port for the charging process using a charging cable included in the package contents.
The mobile phone cradle control unit fulfills the following functions:
- Mobile phone connection to left telephone antenna or right telephone antenna
- Inductive power supply for the mobile phone, if the mobile phone supports the Qi standard
- Forwarding of wake-up signal from the head unit
- Fast login option for mobile phone via the integrated NFC interface or near field communication antenna
The connection to the head unit (via Bluetooth®) is made via the mobile phone.
Telephony with code 899 (Multifunction telephony) exhibits the following properties:

A prompt for the PIN is shown after switching on the mobile phone if the mobile phone is configured for this. The PIN prompt is shown by the head unit over HSVL line on the Audio/COMAND display. The PIN can be entered using the head unit controls.
Near-field communication (NFC) (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony))
The Near Field Communication is an international transmission standard for the wireless exchange of data via radio technology over very short distances of a few centimeters. Mobile phones that are placed on the mobile phone cradle control unit and that support the NFC standard can be connected easily and quickly using Near Field Communication to the mobile phone system. The NFC interface of the mobile phone cradle control unit and the near field communication antenna are used for near field communication. The near-field communication antenna forwards the received signals to the mobile phone cradle control unit. The mobile phone cradle control unit sends the initialization data via the telematics CAN to the head unit.
Additional function requirements for the charging process (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony))
- The mobile phone supports the Qi standard for the wireless charging process.
- The mobile phone is placed into the mobile phone cradle control unit in the center console.
Charging process (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony))
In accordance with the Qi standard the mobile phone is charged during the wireless charging process inductively through the contact surface of the mobile phone cradle. To regulate the mobile phone's power supply, the head unit receives information on the mobile phone battery (e.g. state of charge) over the telematics CAN from the mobile phone cradle control unit.
For a faster charging process or if the Qi standard is not supported, the mobile phone can be connected to the front center console USB port using the charging cable included in the scope of delivery.
