Setting the circumferential backlash
For assembly of the balance shaft housing (3) and for determination of the torsional backlash the engine must absolutely be located in the installation position (cylinder head above, crankshaft below). The dead weight of the crank assembly is absolutely essential for correct determination of the torsional backlash and for assembly of the balance shaft housing (3).
- Remove positioning pin (10).
When replacing balance shaft housing (3).
- Further rotate engine at center bolt of the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation through 90°.
Turning at the crankshaft must take place due to the Spacecoat coating (shaded area on the left spur gear (3L)). The torsional backlash must, however, not be determined in this area.
Mount dial indicator (03) with
adapter and
dial indicator holder (02) on the crankcase.
To avoid measurement errors the ball-type measuring tip of the
dial indicator (03) is detached and a flat measuring tip installed or the
dial indicator (03) is used without a measuring tip.
Ensure zero clearance assembly of the
dial indicator holder (02) on the crankcase. Use
adapter M8 on M6.
The magnetic foot of the
dial indicator holder (02) should be disassembled before assembly on crankcase so that the
dial indicator holder (02) can be mounted directly by means of an
adapter M8 on M6 crankcase.
Position dial indicator (03) tangentially on the toothing on the left spur gear (3L) and bring
dial indicator (03) into the zero position.
The tracing pin of the
dial indicator (03) must stand up correctly on a tooth in the area "9 o'clock" on the left spur gear (3L) in the direction of the transmission. The zero position of the
dial indicator (03) should be adjusted in such a way that the right spur gear (3R) is turned somewhat against the direction of engine rotation.
- Determine the torsional backlash on balance shaft housing (3).
To measure the torsional play turn the right spur gear (3R) by hand back and forth and read off the value on the
dial indicator (03).
- Set torsional play (assembly value) of the balance shaft housing (3).
If the torsional play of the balance shaft housing (3) is too small, the balance shaft housing (3) must be pushed in the direction of the left side of vehicle (arrow G). If the torsional play of the balance shaft housing (3) is too large, the balance shaft housing (3) must be pushed in the direction of the left side of vehicle (arrow K).
- Tighten down screw/bolts (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d) in alphabetic sequence with a first and second torque stage
.
- Torsional backlash of the balance shaft housing (3) must be checked again using the
dial indicator (03).
The torsional play (specified value) of the Lanchester balancer (3) must lie within the tolerance range after tightening the screw/bolts (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d). If this is not the case the torsional play of the balance shaft housing (3) must be set up again. To do this the screw/bolts (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d) must be replaced again.
- Tighten down screw/bolts (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d) in alphabetic sequence with a third and fourth torque stage
.
