Engine - SN01.10-P-0001-01G
Model 118.3 with Engine 260, 282, 608, 654
The new CLA-Class will be offered with four Engines at market launch.
The spark-ignition Engines are equipped, depending on the market, with gasoline particulate filters for the exhaust gas aftertreatment.
The diesel Engines are equipped with the AdBlue® system for the exhaust gas aftertreatment.
Diesel Engine OM 654
Similar to the B-Class, the diesel Engine OM654 is also used in the CLA-Class. Thanks to the compact construction of the new Mercedes-Benz front-wheel-drive platform, the Engine OM 654 is adapted for transverse mounting.
The transversely mounted diesel Engine OM 654 differs from the longitudinally mounted diesel Engine with regard to the following points, among others:
- The Engine is inclined by 6° toward the rear at the crankshaft.
- The divided charge air cooler has a completely new air duct segment on the side of the vehicle.
- The entire air and exhaust routing, including the exhaust gas turbocharger, was adapted for transverse mounting.
- The belt drive was completely redesigned and adapted for the transverse-specific major assembly arrangement.
- The coolant pump is located on the cold side (longitudinal Engine: Hot side).
- 12V12 V pinion starter: Located at transmission end
- Hotend designed transverse-specifically (Package!)
- The high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation sits above the charge air distributor. The arrangement of the ND exhaust gas recirculation sits on the reverse side of the Engine (in the same way along the Engine).
- The oil filter module was completely redesigned. The oil filter is located behind the alternator and the oil cooler is located under the oil filter module.
- Diverse modifications to additional component parts: Oil pan, water guide.
- Transverse-specific Engine cover
- Engine suspension: Transverse-specific Engine carrier at cylinder head at front side (second suspension point at transmission end)
- Bearing bracket for drive shaft support and lower torque support threaded connection
- Near- Engine mounted exhaust gas aftertreatment package optimized, improved coating, and AdBlue® mixer optimization.
Diesel Engine OM 654 exhaust gas cleaning
The exhaust gas cleaning technology already used in the longitudinally mounted diesel Engine OM 654 was completely revised for the transversely mounted Engine. An additional passive underbody SCR/ASC catalytic converter (ammonia slip catalytic converter) was developed to achieve the high NOx emission targets of the Euro 6D TEMP standard. The catalytic converters are effectively used via optimum AdBlue® metering.
The special characteristics of the emissions control system:
- Optimum arrangement of the AdBlue® injection system
- Optimum arrangement of the evaporator and the mixing area
- NOx sensor downstream of SCR catalytic converter
- New sensor unit with three temperature sensors for higher accuracy
- New passive underbody SCR/ASC catalytic converter
