Remove/Check/Install Front Axle Brake Pads - AR42.10-P-1610LWB

  Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A 
WARNING Risk of injury.  Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
CAUTION Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid.
Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid
Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Open service flap above expansion reservoir for brake fluid    
2 Clean area around cap on expansion reservoir for brake fluid Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
3 Unscrew the cap on the brake fluid expansion reservoir and suction off some brake fluid IMPORTANT This prevents the expansion reservoir overflowing when the brake piston is pushed back.  
4 Remove front wheels   AR40.10-P-1102A
5 Create access to electrical line of right front brake pad wear sensor and disconnect electrical connector IMPORTANT Pay attention to the routing of the electrical line of the right front brake pad wear sensor.  
6 Unscrew bolts (2)
Notes on threaded connections fastened using a tightening angle-based tightening process

    INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Replace screw/bolts (2).

7 Press back brake pistons slightly using pusher tool IMPORTANT Attach pusher tool to the elevations of the brake linings (3).
SPECIAL TOOL Resetting device

8 Unhook brake hose (4) out of bracket on steering knuckle or suspension strut    
9 Remove brake caliper (1) from steering knuckle and secure free of tension to vehicle with lines still connected NOTES Do not stretch or kink the brake hose (4) and electrical line.
The brake hose (4) and the electrical line may otherwise be damaged.
 
10 Remove brake pads (3) from brake caliper (1) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Only brake pads (3) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed, and only as complete sets.
Do not apply brake paste or lubricants to the brake linings (3) and brake calipers (1).
 
11 Remove spring steel sheets from brake caliper (1) When replacing the brake pads (3).  
INSPECT Check     
12 Check retaining spring for damage and condition If a problem arises

Replace retaining spring.
 
13 Check brake linings (3) for wear and condition

15 Check brake caliper (1) and dust boots of brake piston for leak tightness and damage If a problem arises

Replace brake caliper (1).

16 Press back brake pistons using pusher tool IMPORTANT Secure remaining brake pistons using two
SPECIAL TOOL wedges against slipping out.

    With sluggish brake pistons

Replace brake caliper (1).

CLEAN Clean     
17 Clean contact surfaces of brake linings (3) on brake caliper (1) and brake piston NOTES Do not use sharp-edged or pointed objects.
The brake caliper (1) or the dust boots of the brake pistons can otherwise be damaged.
Assembly cleaner

18 Pull front right brake pad wear sensor out of backing plate of brake pad (3) When replacing the brake pads (3) or replacing the right front brake wear sensor
IMPORTANT Pay attention to the installation location of the right front brake pad wear sensor.
 
19 Install in the reverse order    
20 Operate the brake pedal several times until brake linings (3) contact the brake disks IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.  
INSPECT Check     
21 Check/correct brake fluid level in expansion reservoir
