Instrument cluster, general
The instrument cluster notifies the driver of all dynamic and static driving conditions as well as about the current condition of the systems installed in the vehicle.
In the event of faulty vehicle functions or functions relevant to safety, corresponding warnings are issued via the instrument cluster.
To provide the driver with information, the following indicators are installed in the instrument cluster:
- Permanent displays (e.g. vehicle speed, rotational speed, tank contents)
- Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue) (e.g. turn signals, high beams)
- Warning lamps (red) (e.g. coolant level, brake fluid level)
- Multifunction display (e.g. outside temperature indicator, travel distance display)
The left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) can be used to navigate within the control menu (e.g. Service, Trip, Media) in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1) and to change to submenus.
- The "O.K." button. (S110s6) is used to confirm the respective selection or pending messages.
All the buttons of the multifunction steering wheel button group are always installed. However the available functions depend on the equipment of the vehicle.
The function description for the "Instrument cluster (KI) function" contains the following functions:
- Function sequence for activate instrument cluster
- Function sequence for indicator lamp test
Further functions are described in separate documents:
- Control/warning messages, function
- Display operating conditions, function
- Comfort displays, function
- Trip computer, function
- Settings on workshop level, function
- Active service system (ASSYST PLUS), function
- It is possible to scroll in the main menu via the system selection button (S110s3).
- It is possible to scroll within a menu in the submenus or in lists using the scroll forward and back button (S110s1).
- The "Back" and voice control system off button (S110s4) can be used in each menu or submenu to jump into the next higher menu level.
Function sequence for activate instrument cluster
If the following events occur, the default screen is activated in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster:
- Unlocking vehicle using radio or infrared
- Opening or closing driver door
- Change in circuit 15C status
If the following events occur, the default screen in the multifunction display and the scale illumination of the instrument cluster are activated:
- Standing light ON (except model 172.475)
- Circuit 15R ON
After switching off circuit 15R, the instrument cluster remains active for t = 30 s. If a fault exists, this time is extended to t = 120 s.
Additional function requirements for indicator lamp test
- Circuit 15 ON
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 via the interior CAN as of 01.03.2016, and via the chassis CAN up to 29.02.2016, to the instrument cluster.
Function sequence for indicator lamp test
The indicator lamp test serves the function test of certain warning lamps and indicator lamps in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster carries out this test automatically each time circuit 15 is switched on.
The function of the following warning and indicator lamps is checked during the indicator lamp test:
- Fuel reserve indicator lamp
- Seat belt warning lamp
- Parking brake indicator lamp
- Supplemental restraint system indicator lamp
- Antilock brake system indicator lamp
- ESP®/ASR OFF warning lamp
- Electronic Stability Program warning lamp
- Brake system warning lamp
- Coolant temperature warning lamp
- Engine diagnosis indicator lamp
- DISTRONIC warning lamp (up to 29.02.2016 with code 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS); as of 01.03.2016 with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) and code 258 (COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST))
- Tire pressure monitor warning lamp (with code 475 (Tire pressure monitor))
The indicator lamp test is terminated when the engine is started.
The function of the following indicator lamps is not checked:
- Left turn signal indicator light
- Right turn signal indicator light
- High beam indicator lamp
- Parking brake indicator lamp
- Pre-glow indicator lamp (diesel engine)
- Rear fog lamp indicator lamp
- Standing light indicator lamp (model 172.475 or vehicles as of 01.06.2012)
- Fog lamp indicator lamp (except code 615 (Bi-xenon headlamp unit with active curve lights) and except code 621 (Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic)) and except code 622 (Intelligent Light System), until 31.05.2015)
