Function requirements, general
- No overvoltage or undervoltage
- Circuit 15R ON or circuit 15 ON
The electronic ignition lock control unit transmits the status of circuit 15 over interior CAN to the multicontour seat control units.
Multicontour seat, general
The contour and surface hardness of the backrest and the seat cushion of the driver and front passenger seat can be changed individually. This is done by air cushions that can be inflated independently of each other.
The air cushions are installed in the following areas:
- Lower lumbar area
- Upper lumbar area
- In the seat side bolsters of the backrest on the left and right
- Front area of seat cushion (seat cushion length)
In order to prevent back tension during long journeys, the multicontour seat is also equipped with a massage function.

Using the memory function, the current seat settings can be stored and called up again along with other settings.

PRE-SAFE®:
In certain danger situations, the seat contour of the driver and front passenger seat automatically changes.
Detailed information on this can be found in the "PRE-SAFE® function" function description.
The multicontour seat function comprises the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence for manual inflation/deflation of air cushions
- Function sequence for the massage function
Function sequence for manual inflation/deflation of air cushions
The contours and surface hardness of the backrest and seat cushion on the multicontour seat can be individually adjusted by inflating and deflating the air cushions.
Inflation/deflation is controlled via a menu in the radio (with CODE 505 (Radio 20 NTG5 non-navigation-capable) or CODE 522 (Audio 20 radio)) or in the COMAND controller unit (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS)).
Operation takes place via the Audio/COMAND control panel and is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display.
After pressing the right free programming button on the Audio/COMAND control panel, the "Seats" submenu is called up on the Audio/COMAND display. "Driver seat" or "Front passenger seat" can be selected using the Audio/COMAND controller and then the "Multicontour seat" setting selected.
The following seat areas can be adjusted:
- Lower lumbar area
- Upper lumbar area
- Left and right seat side bolsters of the backrest
- Front area of seat cushion (seat cushion length)
Vehicles with CODE 505 (Radio 20 NTG5 non-navigation-capable) or CODE 522 (Audio 20 radio):
The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the control signals via telematics CAN to the radio. The radio then activates the Audio/COMAND display over telematics CAN and transmits the information for display of the "Seats" submenu over the LVDS line. The radio evaluates the control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel for adjustment and sends these via interior CAN to the respective multicontour seat control unit.
Vehicles with CODE 531 (COMAND APS):
The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the control signals over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit. The COMAND controller unit then activates the Audio/COMAND display over telematics CAN and transmits the information for display of the "Seats" submenu over the LVDS line. The COMAND controller unit evaluates the control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel for adjustment and sends these via interior CAN to the respective multicontour seat control unit.
The inflation and deflation of the air cushions is controlled by the respective multicontour seat control unit by actuating the integrated piezo valves. The pressure values are recorded by integrated pressure sensors and stored by the relevant multicontour seat control unit.
The air required for inflating the air cushions is supplied by the respective multicontour seat pneumatic pump. The respective multicontour seat control unit actuates the corresponding multicontour seat pneumatic pump directly.
The respective multicontour seat control unit sends information about the current request via interior CAN to the radio (with CODE 505 (Radio 20 NTG5 non-navigation-capable) or CODE 522 (Audio 20 radio)) or to the COMAND controller unit (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS)). The radio (with CODE 505 (Radio 20 NTG5 non-navigation-capable) or CODE 522 (Audio 20 radio)) or the COMAND controller unit (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS)) sends the information for display via the LVDS line to the Audio/COMAND display.
Short-term and long-term control
The short-term control compensates for overpressure deviations in the air cushions. It activates following every adjustment procedure and only remains active for a short, parameterizable period of time. The short-term control is used among others to compensate for sitting down or leaning back immediately and in a comfort-oriented fashion. After the short-term control, the long-term control becomes active. Here, the pressure supply is regulated such that the specified pressure is always achieved. This is controlled by the respective multicontour seat control unit.
Function sequence for the massage function
The massage function helps the driver and front passenger to relax, particularly on longer journeys. As long as the massage function is active, the contour of the 7-layer massage insert is sequentially altered by inflating, maintaining and relieving the pressure. The massage function is available with two intensity stages. The pulsation takes place in pressure jumps in the upward or downward direction. The dwell time can be set with the diagnostic tester. The air required for inflating the air cushions is supplied by the respective multicontour seat pneumatic pump.

"Driver seat" or "Front passenger seat" can be selected using the Audio/COMAND controller and then one of the following massage programs can be selected in the "Massage" menu:
- "0: Off"
- "1: Slow and gentle"
- "2: Slow and strong"
- "3: Fast and gentle"
- "4: Fast and strong"

The COMAND controller unit then activates the Audio/COMAND display over telematics CAN and transmits the information for display of the "Seats" submenu over the LVDS line. The COMAND controller unit evaluates the control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel for adjustment and sends these via interior CAN to the respective multicontour seat control unit.
Function sequence for massage
When a massage program is activated, the multicontour seat control unit opens the main valve for the massage function control unit. The multicontour seat control unit sends the "Massage action" and "Massage intensity" requests via seat LIN to the massage function control unit. The massage function control unit moves a slide valve in a cylinder with seven air outlets. By moving the slide valve, the air outlets to the air cushions for the massage insert are opened or closed.
The massage function control unit can move the slide valve to a total of 23 slide valve positions and hold it there. The individual positions are compared to a reference position (limit switch).
At the same time, the individual actuations are counted by the multicontour seat control unit and thus monitored. Starting with the lower air cushion, the contour in row 1 of the massage insert changes sequentially by inflating, holding and deflating the pressure. After a defined waiting time, the cycle for row 2 is started according to the same pattern.
If the waiting time has elapsed during inflation of row 7, the cycle is continued with row 1. The pressure difference between a deflated and an inflated air cushion is approximately p = 100 mbar. Alternate deflation and inflation of the air cushions in the massage insert creates a wavy or rolling motion, depending on the massage program. The "Slow" massage program stops automatically after approx. t = 8 min, and the "Fast" massage program stops automatically after approx. t = 12 min.
Interruption:
A massage cycle is ended and the main valve is closed by the multicontour seat control unit for the following adjustments:
- Manual adjustment of multicontour seat
- Memory adjustment request (with CODE 275 (Memory package) or CODE P64 (Memory package))
The massage function is continued after the end of the interruption conditions when the next cycle starts.
Abort conditions:
- Overvoltage or undervoltage
- Overloading of the respective multicontour seat pneumatic pump
- PRE-SAFE® request
