	Remove/install
	Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts		AH00.00-N-0001-01A
		While working on the rear axle care must be taken to ensure that the surfaces of aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the of the parts will be reduced.
1	Secure vehicle on vehicle lift		AR00.60-P-0100T
2	Remove left or right wheel		AP40.10-P-4050V
3	Remove twelve-point collar nut (1) from rear axle shaft (2)	Model 171	AR35.30-P-0115-01V
		Model 172 The vehicle may no longer be moved on its wheels when the twelve-point collar nut (1) has been loosened. Otherwise the wheel bearings may be damaged. : Replace twelve-point collar nut (1).	AR35.30-P-0115-01TX

4	Detach left rear axle rpm sensor (L6/3) from wheel carrier (3) and unclip holder for electrical line of left rear axle rpm sensor (L6/3) from wheel carrier (3)	When removing left rear axle shaft (2).

5	Detach right rear axle rpm sensor (L6/4) from wheel carrier (3) and unclip holder for electrical line of right rear axle rpm sensor (L6/3) from wheel carrier (3)	When removing right rear axle shaft (2)

6	Unhook electrical line (8) from left electric parking brake actuator motor (M76/1) or right electric parking brake actuator motor (M76/2)	Model 172

8	Remove thrust arm (5) from wheel carrier (3)		AR35.20-P-0113V

10	Fold wheel carrier (3) outwards and simultaneously press the rear axle shaft (2) out of rear axle shaft flange	Place a dry cloth between the wheel carrier (3) and the spring control arm. Otherwise, the wheel carrier (3) may be damaged. Do not damage the rubber boots on the rear axle shaft (2) and the pulse ring for the left rear axle rpm sensor (L6/3) or the right rear axle rpm sensor (L6/4). Otherwise the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) may suffer from malfunctions. On model 171 do not overstretch the brake cable (arrow) to ensure proper functional capability is retained. If the rear axle shaft (2) is difficult to remove:

11	Pull rear axle shaft (2) out of rear axle differential. 1J	Carefully pull out rear axle shaft (2). Otherwise the radial sealing ring in the rear axle differential may be damaged.	AR35.30-P-0620-02V
	Checking
12	Check constant velocity joints and rubber boots on rear axle shaft (2) for leaks and damage		AR35.30-P-0661P
13	Check condition of side radial sealing ring in rear axle center assembly	If damaged or leaking: Replace radial sealing ring of rear axle shaft (2) on rear axle housing.	AR35.31-P-0541V
14	Install in the reverse order	: Only tighten bolts and nuts of the chassis components in the curb condition.
15	Check oil level in rear axle center assembly, correct if necessary		AR35.31-P-0520-03V
