Remove/Check/Install Front Axle Brake Pads - AR42.10-P-1600MMI

Model 172.466/475 

With fixed Brake caliper

  Risk of poisoning  from swallowing Brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with Brake fluid Only pour Brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling Brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A 
  Risk of injury  . Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A

IMPORTANT Notes on installing Brake wear indicator contact sensors   AH42.10-P-0003-01CW 
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Clean area around cap on expansion reservoir for Brake fluid    
2 Unscrew the cap on the Brake fluid expansion reservoir and suction off some Brake fluid IMPORTANT In order to prevent the expansion reservoir overflowing when pressing back the Brake pistons.
IMPORTANT Extracted Brake fluid must be disposed of properly.
 
3 Remove front wheel-and-tire assemblies    
REFER TO TESTING & REPAIR     AP40.10-P-4050V
4 Disconnect right front Brake wear sensor (S10/2) from right front Brake wear sensor electrical connector (S10/2x1)    
5 Drive out Retaining pins (1) with punch and remove Retaining spring (2) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Drive in Retaining pins (1) up to the end stop. Check Retaining spring (2) is correctly seated.
If there are problems

Replace Retaining pins (1) and Retaining spring (2).
 
6 Remove Brake linings (3) from Brake caliper (4) Seized Brake linings (3) can be pushed out using a lever.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Only complete sets of Brake linings (3) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Brake paste and lubricants must NOT be applied to the Brake linings (3) and Brake caliper (4).
IMPORTANT Brake linings (3) must be disposed of as special waste. The local authorities can provide information regarding whether disposal is also permitted as industrial waste similar to domestic waste.

7 Pull right front Brake wear sensor (S10/2) out of pad backing plate of Brake lining (3) When replacing the Brake linings (3) at front right or if the front right Brake wear sensor (S10/2) is defective.
If the front right Brake wear sensor (S10/2) has a problem

Replace front right Brake wear sensor (S10/2).
 
MEASURING Measure     
8 Check condition of Brake linings (3) and measure degree of wear    
REFER TO TESTING & REPAIR   If there are problems

Replace Brake linings (3) in sets.

9 Check Brake disks for condition and measure wear    
REFER TO TESTING & REPAIR     AP42.10-P-4258V
    If there are problems

Replace Brake disks in sets.
AR42.10-P-0220MMI 
INSPECT Check     
10 Check Brake caliper (4) and dust boots of Brake pistons for leak tightness and damage If there are problems

Replace Brake caliper (4).
AR42.10-P-0070MMI 
11 Press back Brake piston using resetting device SPECIAL TOOL Resetting device
If Brake piston is sluggish

Replace Brake caliper (4).

12 Secure remaining Brake pistons to prevent them from slipping out SPECIAL TOOL Wedge Fig 2
13 Clean contact surfaces of Brake linings (3) on Brake caliper (4) NOTES
Do not damage the Brake piston dust boots.
Do not use sharp-edged or pointed objects.
The Brake caliper (4) must otherwise be replaced.
 
14 Install in the reverse order    
  Initial startup     
  Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service Brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate Brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the Brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A 
15 Operate the Brake pedal several times until Brake linings (3) contact the Brake disks IMPORTANT Wen operating the Brake pedal, a firm resistance must be felt.  
16 Check fluid level in Brake fluid reservoir, and correct if necessary

17 Carry out Brake test on the test stand
